Texas QB David Ash ends career after too many concussions

The quarterbacking career of David Ash is over.

Texas coach Charlie Strong announced Wednesday that Ash, who has suffered at least three documented concussions during his time with the Longhorns, came to him this week and told him he couldn’t play football anymore.

Ash, who missed almost all of last season while recovering from a concussion, was the Longhorns’ starter at the beginning of the season. However, he took a hit in the season opener against North Texas and said he felt the effects later on in the evening.

Ash will stay around the program and help out the other quarterbacks.

Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes has started in Ash’s place and is 0-2 with losses to BYU and UCLA.

During Ash’s four seasons with Texas, he completed 385 of 613 pass attempts for 4,728 yards with 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Following Strong’s announcement, former Texas basketball player Kevin Durant, the NBA’s reigning MVP, sent Ash the following tweet:

Thank you David Ash, you gave your all to the University of Texas. I respect your decision and good luck in the future my brother

Louisville QB Reggie Bonnafon will miss FIU game to attend father's funeral

Louisville freshman backup quarterback Reggie Bonnafon will miss Saturday’s game at Florida International in order to attend his father’s funeral.

Wallace Bonnafon died Monday of heart failure.

"Reggie's a real family guy and had a real close relationship with Wallace, as our staff did,” coach Bobby Petrino told media on Monday. “I would ask that everyone's prayers and thoughts go to Reggie and his family as he works through this."

Bonnafon did not practice on Tuesday and Wednesday Petrino said the Louisville native had returned home to be with his family.

“It's a very tough situation for him and his family, something that caught him a little bit off guard,” Petrino said. “The plans are they're going to have the showing on Friday and the funeral on Saturday, so he's just going to focus on helping his mom and the rest of his family."

Bonnafon has played in the past two games this season. He has completed 14-of-20 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown.

Boston passes ordinance requiring neurotrauma consultants at games

Neurotrauma consultants will be required by Boston city law to be in attendance at every NCAA Division I football, hockey and and lacrosse events.

Boston City Council member Josh Zakim proposed the ordinance in May. Now that it's passed, it will go into effect on July 1, 2015.

Boston College is the only FBS program that plays its home games within Boston, but it'll also cover Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern.

“Most major Division I programs probably meet this definition already, but I think you might see it have more of an impact at a smaller school,” Dan Sibor, the chief of staff for Zakim, told CBS Sports. “There's no competitive consideration here. The consultant is supporting the onsite medical teams for the two teams. The final decision on evaluating a player still remains with the medical staff of that player.”

Schools must also have emergency action plans and if a player has or is suspected to have a concussion he is prohibited from playing in the game. The city passed the plan because of a lack of a comprehensive NCAA plan. The NCAA passed concussion guidelines in July, however they were not designed as rules so that they can be tweaked as research allows.

“It may be as simple as periodically sending people out to check for compliance or asking the schools to submit a report,” Sibor told CBS. “There's a self-reporting aspect to it where if a student or family has a complaint, they can call the commission as well. The commission could establish fines. They could use the services of the attorney general's office. We're pretty confident most of the schools in the city takes this really seriously already.”

In addition to the neurotrauma consultant requirement for head and neck injuries, Zakim also proposed an ordinance in May that would require all city schools to offer four-year scholarships. While four-year scholarships are available, schools have been slow to publicly adopt the trend. Teams like Maryland, USC and Indiana have announced that they will provide full scholarships. (Multi-year scholarships were banned from 1973-2012.)

“If the mission of the NCAA and its member institutions truly is to educate, then scholarships should not be renewable at the sole discretion of the school,” Zakim said in May via the Back Bay Sun. “Asking college athletes to make a four year commitment to their schools without any reciprocal commitment from the school is unjust and hypocritical.”

Per CBS, the scholarship ordinance is set to be voted on later in the fall.

Pac-12 backup quarterbacks suddenly have been thrust into the spotlight

When the season began, much of the talk about the Pac-12 revolved around an impressive crop of starting quarterbacks. However, just three weeks into the season, depth at that position has become more important than ever.

Last weekend, both Arizona State’s Taylor Kelly and UCLA’s Brett Hundley — two of the premier quarterbacks in the league — suffered injuries that could keep them out for an extended amount of time. I say “could” because neither coach Todd Graham nor coach Jim Mora has been too keen on announcing exactly what is wrong with either quarterback or how long either will be out.

But in their absences, we watched Kelly’s backup Mike Bercovici and Hundley’s backup Jerry Neuheisel take the reins of their respective teams with mixed results. Neuheisel, who came into last week’s game against Texas in the first quarter, threw the game-winning touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to give the Bruins a 20-17.

By the time Bercovici came in in the third quarter against Colorado, the Sun Devils were leading 38-17. He threw four passes, completed two of them for eight yards and helped Arizona State secure a 38-24 win.

What makes these quarterbacking situations even more interesting is that both teams have a bye this week before they meet next Thursday night. Kelly already has been ruled out for the game against the Bruins and Bercovici has confidence that he can take the reins of the team.

"I've been ready for this for a long time," Bercovici said Tuesday. "I really do put the pressure and the constraint on myself that this is an opportunity I owe to my teammates. If I wasn't ready right now, it would be pretty obvious to the guys at practice. I think the guys felt confidence in me after this practice knowing there's no drop off."

Neuheisel doesn’t need to tell anyone he’s ready to run the Bruins’ offense. After a shaky start, the coaching staff allowed him a little more freedom in the offense and he executed against the Longhorns. He completed 23-of-30 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns, including a 33-yard strike to Jordan Payton to win the game.

“Jerry told me, he said 'I was nervous,’” Mora said following the Texas game. “And I said, 'I wasn't because I've watched you everyday and I've watched you prepare and I know how smart you and I know your lineage and I know how your dad taught you.’ And, I think it all paid off for him tonight, and I'm just so happy for him and the rest of our players.”

Mora has not said whether Hundley would be back against Arizona State or if he’d stick with Neuheisel. If you’ve watched any UCLA football this season, Mora might be smart to stick with his hot hand. While Hundley hasn’t exactly played poorly, the UCLA offense hasn’t thrived with him under center. However, it seemed rejuvenated with Neuheisel and perhaps it might be the best move for the Bruins at this time.

In any case, it’s probably time every Pac-12 fan got to know their backup quarterback. So, we put together a quick primer for the other 10 Pac-12 schools:,/p>

Arizona: USC transfer Jesse Scroggins was on the road to being the starter before a car wreck in the offseason derailed those plans. However, the fact that he was in the original starting plans should give Wildcats a measure of comfort.

Cal: Luke Rubenzer has already seen playing time as a freshman, but probably won’t see much as starter Jeff Goff has locked down this role. Still, Rubenzer has looked decent in spot time and can run the same up-tempo style if he needs to.

Colorado: Jordan Gehrke made his collegiate debut in the waning minutes of the losing effort against Arizona State last weekend and impressed. Colorado fans might see more of him as starter Sefo Liufau has struggled with his consistency.

Oregon: If Marcus Mariota were lost for an extended amount of time it would be devastating for the Ducks, there’s no doubt about that, but third-year sophomore Jeff Lockie has been steady in his limited action. However, Lockie’s probably not the future for this team. That role likely goes to redshirting freshman Morgan Mahalak.

Oregon State: Sophomore Brent VanderVeen hasn’t played yet this season, but he did win a hotly-contested duel for the backup role against Alabama transfer Luke Del Rio. VanderVeen knows coach Mike Riley’s system, but he’s never played a collegiate snap.

Stanford: Coach David Shaw has had nothing but positive words about backup Evan Crower and Crower played well in the season opener against UC Davis after the game was well in hand. Shaw has no worries about having to go to Crower in an emergency, neither should you.

USC: Few recruits have come into a program anointed the starter, but that was that’s how a lot of folks felt about Max Browne — until Cody Kessler won the starting job. Still, Browne, who redshirted last season, is a top recruit and completed 75 percent of his passes in late-game action against Fresno State.

Washington: There’s a reason why even after Cyler Miles missed spring football and was suspended for the season opener that he remained the starter. The Washington backups aren’t inspiring and coach Chris Petersen hasn’t even picked a solid No. 2. Jeff Lindquist started the season opener against Hawaii, but Troy Williams played last week against Illinois. If you’re a Washington fan, pray Miles doesn’t get hurt (or in any more trouble).

Washington State: One of these days, Connor Halliday’s arm is going to fall off after throwing 70 passes in a game and coach Mike Leach is going to have to call on Luke Falk, a redshirt freshman who received his first playing time against Portland State last weekend. If there’s any consolation, Falk did complete both of his pass attempts for 86 yards, which included an 84-yard touchdown.

UCLA and Arizona State should be cautionary tales. No matter how hyped your starter is, the backup better be equally as good because you never know when you might need him to save the day.

Jameis Winston's mistakes provide a teaching moment for other programs

It didn’t take long for Jameis Winston’s obscene outburst in the Florida State student union on Tuesday to become a teaching moment for other programs.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze told The Tim Brando Show on Wednesday that he thinks coaches need to do a better job of educating players about who and what they represent as it pertains to themselves and the universities for which they play.

“I believe wholeheartedly that it is my job and our staff’s job to help these young men navigate life long after football,” Freeze said. “I suspended a kid this year for the first game because of a public scene he had in the summer in a public place. It was not the type of language or behavior that I think a young man should want to be, particularly when representing our university and our football team.

“Do I know it happens? Absolutely. It happens, but we have to educate our kids. As a matter of fact, in today’s team meeting, that’s what it’s all going to be about, reminding them of the platform you have. What kind of brand do you want for yourself? I have no idea what even happened (with Winston), I really don’t, but I know here, we do have a responsibility to educate our kids and hopefully hold them accountable to a certain standard.”

While Freeze made sure his comments were not a slight against Winston, the question came up because Freeze happened to be on the show at the same time Winston’s half-game suspension was announced. But it was clear he was aware of the incident and knew it would be a good opportunity to show his players the perils of making poor decisions.

Freeze also mentioned social media and said he checks the Twitter pages of his players on a regular basis.

“I will pull up one of our players’ (posts), I’ll pull his name down, put it on the screen, maybe his last 10 tweets,” Freeze said. “I want everybody in the room to tell me what’s important to this kid. I use the good and the bad and try to continue to harp on our guys: Use the platform God’s given you for good. It doesn’t mean you don’t have negative things in your life, but you don’t have to put it all out there. That doesn’t have to be the focus when you’re using a social media platform, because you’re making your brand.

“I have disappointments in my life, discouragements in my life, but I hopefully will choose to use the platform for the brand I really want to be known for. … We call our kids on it pretty regularly in private. I keep up with them, and our coaches do. We try to make sure it’s representing something they want to be known for.”

Winston is a Heisman Trophy winner, the face of Florida State and arguably the best player in college football. There’s probably no better person to use as a teaching moment for other players simply because of his status and because of his inability to get out of his own way.

Perhaps at some point, Winston will use one of his many off-field issues as a teaching moment for himself.

Former TCU DE wants to come back to the FBS before trying to make the NFL

Former TCU defensive end Devonte Fields has no plans to turn pro after this football season. In fact, he has his sights set on returning to the FBS.

Fields is currently playing at Trinity Valley Community College and his coach Brad Smiley told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Fields plans to go through the recruiting process from junior college and get back to the FBS for 2015.

"Everything he has said to me and everything his family has said to me is the plan is for him to get his (Associate's Degree) and to play Division I again," Smiley told the paper Tuesday. "He is excited about going through that process and playing Division I again. He has not said anything about coming out to play in the NFL."

Fields and TCU divorced earlier this year after Fields was involved in several off-field issues, including a dispute with his girlfriend that reportedly included an assault. Fields is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 17.

Fields tried to transfer to Stephen F. Austin, but he didn’t want to have to sit out a year.

Despite Fields off-field issues, he was briefly a star on it. In 2012, he was the Big 12’s defensive player of the year. He missed all but three games in 2013 because of a foot injury, but his promise made him the preseason Big 12 defensive player of the year in 2014.

However, he never got the chance to live up to that billing.

Fields has made 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks in three games at Trinity Valley Community College.

"He could not say enough nice things about TCU, Stephen F. Austin and the way everybody tried to help him," Smiley told the Star-Telegram. "He's a great kid and he's been doing great. He came here with the right attitude and he just wanted to get things settled down."

Jameis Winston apologizes for actions that led to first-half suspension against Clemson

Jameis Winston apologized Wednesday afternoon for yelling an obscene phrase on the Florida State campus on Tuesday. He met with the media not long after the school announced he had been suspended for the first half of Saturday's game against Clemson.

The phrase, which we cannot repeat here, is a vulgar meme that has been shouted by videobombers during live newscasts before.

"First of all I want to apologize to the university, to my coaches and to my teammates," Winston said. I'm not a 'me' person but in that situation it was a selfish act and that's not how you do things around here. I really want to apologize to my teammates, because I've now made a selfish act for them.

"You know, you've got to overcome adversity," Winston later said. "And that's one thing at Florida State that we do. We're going to overcome adversity. And when I do get my opportunity to play, I'm going to do everything I can, because I have to accept that. That's going to eat me up. I want to be out there on the field. You understand what I'm saying? I want to be out there on the field with my team. But I did something so I've got to accept my consequences and I'm going to apologize to my team. So we're not going to think about that. We don't think about negative things, we're going to think about moving forward and having to win the game."

Sean Maguire, Winston's backup, will start in his place.

In August 2013, before he started his first game for Florida State, Winston told reporters that "If I ever get Manziel disease, I want all of you to smack me in the head with your microphones." Well, one could make the argument that the off-field drama surrounding Winston has exceeded the drama surrounding Manziel in his time at Texas A&M.

Winston's Wednesday apology also had a similar tone to previous apologies he's made about his off-field behavior.

News of a December 2012 accusation of sexual assault against Winston emerged in November 2013. After Florida state attorney Willie Meggs announced in December 2013 that Winston would not be charged in the case because of a lack of evidence, Winston released this statement.

"I want to thank my family, friends, coaches and teammates for standing by me during a difficult time," he said. "I also want to thank the State Attorney's Office for examining all of the facts and reaching a decision in a conclusive manner. It's been difficult to stay silent through this process, but I never lost faith in the truth and in who I am. I'm very relieved I'll be able to continue my education at Florida State and I'm excited I can now get back to helping our team achieve its goals."

As Florida State went on to beat Auburn for the BCS Championship and Winston won the Heisman shortly after Meggs' announcement, Winston admitted he had talked with Manziel about how to handle distractions off the field.

“I did have an opportunity to talk to Johnny. He just told me to stay myself,” Winston said before the BCS Championship Game. “When you think about the things that Johnny went through and then you see the things that he does on the field, it makes you forget about the things that's happening, and that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to make football be my getaway, and that's what he's done a great job of. And that's why I'm glad I've got a team like this because they allow me to let football be the getaway because when I look in their eyes, they're like, we're ready to fight.”

Both spring football and baseball were Winston's getaway following the BCS title. And he briefly lost the baseball getaway April when he was cited for shoplifting crab legs and crawfish from a Tallahassee, Fla.-area Publix.

"As reported in the news, last night I received an adult civil citation for petit theft from a local supermarket," Winston said in a statement after his citation. "I went to the supermarket with the intent to purchase dinner but made a terrible mistake for which I’m taking full responsibility. In a moment of youthful ignorance, I walked out of the store without paying for one of my items.

"I realize that I am in the public spotlight and my conduct needs to be above reproach. Over the last year I’ve learned that my accomplishments on the fields can be a wonderful thing for my school, teammates, friends, and family. At the same time, I must realize that my mistakes are magnified and can bring great embarrassment to all those who support me every day. I make no excuses for my actions and will learn and grow from this unfortunate situation.

After the seafood swipe, details emerged surrounding an incident from when Winston was a redshirt freshman in 2012. He and teammate Chris Casher were "briefly detained" after being confronted by campus police at gunpoint for having a pellet gun to shoot squirrels at an area adjacent to campus. The gun and pellets were detained and neither player was charged. This happened two days before Winston was questioned in an incident involving damage to apartment complex windows from an alleged BB gun fight.

At ACC media days in July, Winston said he had to hold himself to a "certain standard." He must have forgotten these comments on Tuesday.

“I've got to hold myself to a certain standard that the media may view me in, that the regular people may view me in, but I know I can do that because I've learned the true definition of being a leader and being a leader on and off the field,” Winston said during ACC media day on Sunday.

“As a leader for the Florida State Seminoles, I not only have to respect the name on the back of my jersey, but I have a great university that is looking for me to be a great student athlete, and more importantly I have teammates that are counting on me,” Winston said. “Accountability is something that's very important to me, and so, yes, I have learned, and I've learned that leadership is more important playing the quarterback position than anything else.”

Now, with a first half suspension, we'll see if Winston has truly learned about accountability. Until this point, his presence on the football field has been unaffected by anything off the field at FSU. Will missing 30 minutes of football be a proverbial kick in the pants for Winston? His words certainly haven't been very meaningful so far.

The Crowther family attended last Saturday’s game and was given the game ball from the team’s first home win against a top 10 opponent since 1989.

It’s hard to fault Boston College for wanting to keep the adornments around for the rest of the year. Not only do they honor a great man, but one could argue they’re now a good luck charm. And, well, they look good, too.

Winston to sit half vs. Clemson for lewd remark

FSU coach Jimbo Fisher still mulling punishment for Jameis Winston

Florida state coach Jimbo Fisher said he was disappointed in starting quarterback Jameis Winston after he shouted a sexually explicit phrase in the middle of the student union on Tuesday.

Fisher, who was asked about the incident on the ACC teleconference, said he spoke to Winston, but has not decided what if any punishment would be taken.

“Yes, everything has been addressed and we’re getting ready for the game," Fisher said. "We're deciding (on punishment) and talking as things go on right now."

No. 1 Florida State plays ACC rival No. 22 Clemson this weekend in a game that likely will determine the ACC Atlantic Division.

Deadspin was the first to report Tuesday’s incident as an array of tweets started popping up saying Winston had stood on a table and yelled an obscene phrase to the crowd. While the phrase cannot be repeated because it is incredibly crass, it is actually a meme that was created earlier this year and people have shouted it during live newscasts.

Fisher was asked whether he was frustrated by his Heisman Trophy winner’s behavior and he said: "You don't ever want any kind of instances, but we have to keep learning and educating. But we have to make better decisions, we have to make good decisions on things. And we’ll try to continue to do that. And try to educate.”

This is just the latest incident in Winston’s sordid and childish tenure at Florida State. Last year, Winston was accused of sexually assaulting a female student and he remains the subject of an ongoing Title IX matter regarding the same alleged victim. In April, he was caught stealing crab legs from a local grocery store. He also was involved in a BB gun fight that resulted in thousands of dollars worth of damage to an apartment complex and he was caught stealing soda from a Burger King.

Yet through all of this, Winston, who is arguably the best player in the country, has never faced a suspension. He’s never missed a game, never missed a down. His behavior continues to go unchecked in the public eye and is often dismissed as childish pranks. And that would be all well and good if he wasn’t the face of the university, a Heisman Trophy winner and if there wasn’t a pattern of habitual bad behavior. There’s an arrogance to this that comes from being given passes by everyone from the authority figures at Florida State to his father to even the commenters on Dr. Saturday’s various social media platforms and the comments at the bottom of every Winston story.

Those who enable Winston’s immature, insensitive and damaging behavior are just as guilty in allowing it to perpetuate. Winston will never mature as long as his ability on the field outweighs his liability off of it.

Nebraska ready to face challenging Miami defense

And then there were two.

After just three weeks of the 2014 college football season, only two of 14 Big Ten teams remain unbeaten – Nebraska and Penn State.

The conference’s general ineptitude has been a big story his year. Big Ten teams have gone an awful 1-10 against Power Five schools so far, but Nebraska’s Saturday night home matchup against Miami has the potential to turn the tides a bit for the downtrodden Big Ten.

The Huskers are coming off a dominant 55-19 road win over a bad Fresno State team. It was a good way to bounce back from a near disaster against FCS McNeese State. If not for a heroic effort from standout running back Ameer Abdullah on the game-winning late fourth quarter score against McNeese, the overall scope of the Huskers’ season thus far would look drastically different.

Nonetheless, Bo Pelini knows his team needs to kick it up a notch with Fresno State in the rearview mirror and the Hurricanes coming to Lincoln.

“We did some pretty good things (against Fresno), We got some things on film that our kids will learn from as we always do coming out of a game,” Pelini said. “Playing a team with the tradition that Miami has and the talent that they have on their football team. I’m sure it will get our guys’ attention.”

Miami, with its physical front seven, is only allowing 82.7 rushing yards per game (15th best in the nation) and 259.7 total yards per game, good enough for 8th best in the nation. Linebackers Thurston Armbrister, who leads the ACC with four sacks, and Denzel Perryman (25 total tackles) lead the way. The Canes will be a tough challenge for the Nebraska offensive line and sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. who didn't have a whole lot of trouble with Florida Atlantic, McNeese and Fresno.

“I think they have some good size up front. They have a couple of very good linebackers. I think it will be a good test for our guys,” Pelini said.

Conversely, the Miami defense has not seen a player with the level of skill that compares to Abdullah and Armstrong, in his first year as full-time starter, is off to a a solid start. Though he has completed just 53.1 percent of his passes, the sophomore has shown growth while throwing for 773 yards with seven touchdowns and just one interception.

“You know, they’re a good defense. A talented defense. It’s going to be a good challenge for (Armstrong),” Pelini said. “It’s not like this is Tommy’s first rodeo either. He started eight football games a year ago. The three games he’s started in this year, he’s basically played a season now. Obviously his experience helps him. I think he’s getting more comfortable as he goes. I really do.”

For the Nebraska defense, it’s no secret that a key to success will be to stop Duke Johnson, a 206-pound junior running back who is averaging 6.4 yards per carry so far this season. A consistent ground attack is what sets up true freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya’s success through the air, so Pelini knows stopping the run will be crucial.

“I think their game and philosophy starts with the running game,” Pelini said. “They kind of set up their passing game with the running game by getting some play-actions with things down the field and making you have to honor that running game. Like any good football team, you better control the line of scrimmage and control the running game. That gives you a lot better opportunity to dictate to them rather than them dictate to you.”

Though these two programs haven’t met in the regular season since 1976, there is still some significant history. Nebraska and Miami have squared off for four national championships, with Miami winning three (1983 Orange Bowl, 1991 Orange Bowl and 2001 Rose Bowl).

The 1994 Orange Bowl win over Miami was the first of three national titles for Nebraska in the 90’s, and that team will be honored Saturday.

If the 2014 Huskers can channel the 1994 team and knock off the Hurricanes, it’d be the program’s first 4-0 start since 2011. A Nebraska win, coupled with the chance for Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and Indiana to all beat Power Five teams, could be a first step for a Big Ten Conference that needs to re-establish its national standing.

Notre Dame president says academic investigation involves student employed in athletic department

Notre Dame president Fr. John Jenkins said Tuesday that the university's academic investigation into some football players involves a student who was employed by the athletic department.

Jenkins spoke to Notre Dame faculty on Tuesday and said the athletic department became aware of “a potentially problematic situation involving a current student athlete as well as a student who served for a brief time as a paid student employee of the athletic department, although that position had no role in academic tutoring or advising of student athletes.”

Jenkins said he didn’t think there had been any improprieties by members of Notre Dame’s fulltime staff, but that because this student was earning money for his work, the NCAA could consider his or her involvement an “extra benefit,” which would be an NCAA violation.

Jenkins didn’t have much more news to report regarding the academic investigation, though he did defend the school’s decision to release the names of the football players involved stating that he wanted the school to release them since they were already circulating on social media.

“In order to deter unfounded speculation about individuals not involved, we made an exception to our policy of not releasing the names of students involved in such a process and confirmed the identities of implicated students who had already been named in the public forum,” he said.

Kansas AD's name on response to fan email asking for Charlie Weis' dismissal

As Kansas' 41-3 loss to Duke was ending on Saturday, Scott Paradise, like many Kansas fans, was frustrated.

The Jayhawks haven't won a game on the road since Mark Mangino, now Iowa State's offensive coordinator, was the head coach. Simply put, since Mangino led the Jayhawks to the 2008 Orange Bowl and parted ways with the school in 2009, the Jayhawks have been one of the worst programs Power Five programs in college football.

Paradise took out his frustration in an email to Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger. The subject of the email was "FIRE WEIS." Straight and to the point in reference to Kansas coach Charlie Weis. Tuesday, per the Kansas City Star, Paradise got a reply from an assistant with Zenger's name attached to it.

"We appreciate your input and hope you will continue to support the Kansas Jayhawks," the email said. "Please know that we are fully aware of your frustration and we are watching this situation closely. Our team values your support; we hope you will stick with us through this challenging time. Thank you and Rock Chalk."

The Jayhawks are three-point favorites against the Chippewas, a team that beat Purdue earlier in the year on the road. Is it a make-or-break game for Weis? Lawrence Journal-World columnist Tom Keegan thinks it's possible.

Weis is in his third year at Kansas. In 2012, the Jayhawks were 1-11. Last season, KU was 3-9, a record that included a home win against West Virginia, Kansas' first conference win since beating Colorado in 2010. This season, Kansas is 1-1 after staving off a late comeback bid against Southeastern Missouri State in the first game of the season. Following that game, some players, including team captain Ben Heeney, commented on the team's focus and the approximately 36,000 people in attendance. Weis said they should shut up.

If things continue to be challenging, to put it mildly, and Kansas goes in another direction at head coach, the Jayhawks would be on a fourth head coach in seven seasons. Even three in six is hardly a recipe for continuity. After Mangino's unceremonious dismissal, Turner Gill and Weis have been unable to come close to the success that he achieved.

More and more, the 2007 Orange Bowl season is looking like a flash in the pan. In a hyper-competitive Big 12, a big bowl berth seems a long way away. But at this point, simple mediocrity does too. If Kansas takes care of Central Michigan on Saturday, mediocrity seems a lot closer and the challenging time potentially shorter. If it doesn't, you have to wonder how much more closely the situation will be watched.

Fresno State is holding walk-on tryouts to find a kicker

Fresno State is looking for a backup kicker and you could be it.

The Bulldogs, who only have two kickers on their roster — freshman walk-on Kody Kroening and punter Garrett Swanson — are holding open tryouts for all fulltime students with kicking experience.

Yes, it’s come to this.

Earlier this month, starting kicker Colin McGuire left the program to deal with “personal issues with his family.”

“We really appreciate the contributions from Colin over the last year and a half — he helped us win a Mountain West Conference championship,” coach Tim DeRuyter told the Fresno Bee at the time. “We let him have a couple of weeks off during training camp this year to deal with some personal issues with his family. We thought we were over the hump, but clearly he has to spend some more time taking care of that and we wish him all the best as he deals with this difficult time in his life.”

McGuire did play in the season opener against USC and made one of his two extra point attempts. In his absence, Kroening has performed well. He’s made all five of his extra point attempts and one of his two field goals.

However, Fresno State is one of just three school this season that hasn’t recorded a touchback (Wisconsin and SMU are the others).

Can’t blame DeRuyter for wanting a little extra securing at such a pivotal position, especially as the Bulldogs attempt to defend their Mountain West title.
