Report: Florida State compliance investigating whether QB Jameis Winston signed memorabilia for money

Florida State’s athletic compliance department is looking into allegations that quarterback Jameis Winston was paid to sign for hundreds of pieces of memorabilia, according to a report by ESPN.com.

ESPN noted that following Saturday’s 38-20 win against Syracuse, Florida state coach Jimbo Fisher asked Winston if he had signed memorabilia for money and Winston told him no.FSU quarterback Jameis Winston (5) calls a play against Syracuse. (USAT)

However, signed Winston memorabilia has been linked to James Spence Authentication, the same autograph authentication business that is involved in the investigation regarding Georgia running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley missed last week’s game against Missouri while the school investigated allegations that he violated NCAA rules by signing autographs for money.

Currently, more than 340 items bearing Winston’s signature are on the James Spence Authentication website.

Fisher, however, did not seem worried that what Winston was telling him was false.

"Kids sign things all the time," Fisher said after Saturday's game. "So, what do you want them to do, stop signing stuff? We could make them not have any fans from that standpoint and not sign for anybody. That's what it's going to come to, and that's a shame for college football, that somebody exploits a kid. Now, if they're getting paid for it, then I don't have any knowledge of that. I don't believe Jameis did."

However, Fisher’s theory has some holes in it. As ESPN notes, authenticators attach serial numbers to autographed items in a sequential order.

JSA authenticated 76 of the exact same Florida State logo footballs in order with serial numbers J65886 through J65962 and 70 of the exact same signed mini helmets in order with serial numbers J66829 through J66896. The company also authenticated 53 jerseys in row (J66947 through J67001), 38 11-by-14 photos (J66026 through J66064), 18 of the exact same footballs (J66919 through J66936) and 11 signed Rawlings baseballs (J66898 through J66911).

"The items that I've seen signed by Todd Gurley and Jameis Winston, which have been authenticated by JSA, look like they came from an autograph signing," Martin Buckley, co-owner of Palm Beach Autographs in Florida, which has done signings with Heisman Trophy winners Tim Tebow, Herschel Walker and Charlie Ward, among others, told ESPN. "This is based on the items, themselves, being similar, the quantities of those items, the consistency of signature as well as similar spots in which they signed."

Winston is currently awaiting a Student Code of Conduct hearing regarding the sexual assault of a former female student. The informational hearing is scheduled to take place this week; the conduct hearing will be held shortly afterward. Winston is facing four violations of FSU’s student conduct code. Fisher said Monday he did not expect Winston to miss any game time.

Earlier this year, Winston was suspended for the Clemson game after yelling an obscene phrase in the FSU student union.

Alabama coach Nick Saban gets heated about fan expectations following 14-13 win (Video)

Alabama coach Nick Saban got a little testy during his weekly press conference on Monday and it wasn’t because of the media — it was because of the fans.

Saban was asked about the mistakes his team made during Saturday’s 14-13 win against Arkansas and while answering the question he also used the opportunity to rail against fans who were upset with the team’s win.

“It really, if you want to know the truth about it, pisses me off when I talk to people that have this expectation like they’re disappointed that we only won the game 14-13 and the way we played,” Saban said. “That’s frustrating. You want to talk about something that’s frustrating? That’s frustrating to me, for our players, who play with a lot of heart in the game.”

“Everybody’s got such a high expectation for what our team should be. I was just happy to see our players be happy about playing a game and winning,” Saban said.

Alabama’s play in a loss to Ole Miss and then against Arkansas has created a lot of angst for its fan base because many thought the Tide was a team that could compete for the spot in the College Football Playoff. That goal is still out there even with one loss, though it does get a little tougher with the way Ole Miss and Mississippi State are playing.

Still, Saban might need to calm down a bit. He created a program that was built to contend for championships and when it falls short of that goal, people are going to be upset.

FBS coaches say LSU's Tiger Stadium is toughest road environment

A lot of fans across the country boast that their favorite team has the toughest stadium environment in college football, but what do the coaches think?

According to a poll of conducted by ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, LSU’s Tiger Stadium is the toughest road environment for visiting teams.

Of the 128 FBS coaches, McMurphy was able to receive responses from 99 coaches, and LSU received a whopping 21 percent of the vote. The next closest was Texas A&M’s Kyle Field at nine percent.

After LSU and A&M, there were 14 other schools that received more than one percent of the vote: Oregon (6 percent), Oklahoma (5 percent), Wisconsin (5 percent), Alabama (4 percent), Clemson (4 percent), Iowa (4 percent), Ohio State (4 percent), Virginia Tech (4 percent), Auburn (3 percent), Tennessee (3 percent), West Virginia (3 percent), Florida (2 percent), Penn State (2 percent) and South Carolina (2 percent).

Additionally, 18 other schools received one percent of the vote: Arizona, Arkansas, BYU, Kansas State, Marshall, Montana, Navy, Nebraska, New Mexico State, North Dakota State, Notre Dame, Northwest Missouri State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburg (Kan.) State, Syracuse, Tennessee State, Texas Tech, and Utah.

Though there are some head-scratching entries there that received votes, the choice for LSU wasn’t all that surprising. Before Mississippi State beat the Tigers on Sept. 20, LSU hadn’t lost at home since Nov. 2012.

OU coach Bob Stoops upset over Zack Sanchez's headband message

Oklahoma sophomore cornerback Zack Sanchez was one of the reasons Oklahoma was able to secure a 31-26 win against Texas on Saturday, but his under-helmet antics drew the ire of coach Bob Stoops.

Under Sanchez’s helmet, he wore a headband that read “B.T.P Frank Shannon” and his eye black read “Free BM.”

The act of protest might not have been a big deal had ESPN cameras not picked it up and flashed the headband for the world to see.

Here is the Frank Shannon message Sanchez wore Saturday if you missed it. Not sure what B.T.P. means http://ift.tt/1qVHB1l

— Jordan Esco (@Jordan_Esco) October 13, 2014

“They shouldn’t be, I don’t like that,” Stoops said after alerted to the issue on the Big 12 coaches teleconference. “I stand by the university and what we’ve done so that’ll be addressed.”

Shannon, the Sooners leading tackler a year ago, was suspended for the season following a Title IX investigation into the sexual assault of a female student.

Mayfield is a Texas Tech transfer that was denied immediate eligibility from the NCAA following his transfer despite the fact that he was a walk-on for the Red Raiders.

Saturday’s game wasn’t the first time Sanchez, who had an interception for a touchdown against Texas, had voiced his support for Shannon. Earlier this month he sent out a tweet in support of Shannon.

Frank Shannon ... My dawg .. My brother ... Cheated out of a year of playin ... Crazy how this "system" works smhh

— Zack Sanchez (@ZSanchez15) October 3, 2014

Stoops was asked during the teleconference whether players had any other outlet for making their feelings on team decisions known.

“No, nothing team related is to be made public, and that’s the same on Twitter, same on any social media, and I would regard that as social media,” Stoops said. “Team matters are to be with us. Period.”

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze aware of alleged Robert Nkemdiche bong picture

There is a photo circulating the internet over the last 24 hours that allegedly shows Ole Miss star defensive end Robert Nkemdiche smoking a bong.

Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze said Monday that he is “very aware” of the photo and its background.

“I’m very aware of the picture and also when it was taken and where it was taken” Freeze said, per the Clarion-Ledger. “We test our team on our drug-testing policy at the beginning of the season and then we have our follow-up tests throughout the course of the year. I’m super confident we handled each one the same and we enforce our policy very consistently.”

According to Outkick the Coverage, the photo, shown below, was originally posted by a Tennessee fan on the message board of Volquest.com, Rivals.com’s Tennessee site.

I'm sure this isn't Robert Nkemdiche doing drugs, probably just some other 300lb muscular guy @OleMissFB http://ift.tt/1Cesian

— Not Danny Ford (@1981tigers1981) October 13, 2014

The fan who posted it said he "received the photo from a friend back in August” and was “holding it” until Tennessee played Ole Miss. With the game against the third-ranked Rebels coming on Saturday, some Vols fans on the message board apparently “discussed how to distribute the photo” of Nkemdiche, the former top-ranked recruit in the country.

Per the Clarion-Ledger, players are not suspended automatically for a first failed drug test, but a second failed test results in the player being suspended for “25 percent of the team’s remaining games,” while a third results in a dismissal from the team and a revoked scholarship.

“We’re going to hold them accountable for actions that are not what we want representing our university and our program, or that would hurt themselves,” Freeze said of the program’s drug-testing policy. “I’m very confident that we deal with all of them in the same manner and that we’ll continue to do that.”

Nkemdiche, a sophomore, has 14 tackles and one sack for the 6-0 Rebels.

Both Jeff Driskel and Treon Harris will play QB for Florida against Missouri

Florida will play two quarterbacks Saturday against Missouri.

Will Muschamp told reporters Monday that struggling junior Jeff Driskel will likely start, but freshman Treon Harris, fresh off his reinstatement after being accused of sexual assault, should also see playing time.

“They both will play this week,” Muschamp said per the Orlando Sentinel. “Right now, Jeff will probably start, but they’re both going to play.”

Driskel has started every game for the 3-2 Gators, but has already thrown eight interceptions, including a crucial one in the final minute of the Gators’ last-second loss to LSU over the weekend. Driskel’s interception, his second of the game, allowed LSU kicker Colby Delahoussaye to hit a 50-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game.

Before the late game interception, Driskel actually played one of his better games of the season. He threw for 183 yards and a score while also running for 71 yards and another touchdown. He also led the Gators on what could have been a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter, but tight end Tevin Westbrook dropped the go-ahead TD pass on third-and-goal, forcing the Gators to tie things up with a field goal.

Harris was reinstated by both the university and the football program Friday night after his accuser withdrew her complaint. He did not play against the Tigers, but helped the Gators beat Tennessee on the road on Oct. 4.

Harris returned to practice Monday and Muschamp said the week off could impact his preparation for Missouri.

“He’s a freshman,” Muschamp said, per InsidetheGators.com. “It would mean more than a third or fourth year player certainly. We’ll see (Monday). This will be his first day back with us. We look forward to getting him back into form.”

Driskel learned of his coach’s decision Monday and said he’s willing to do whatever it takes if it helps the team.

“Treon and I are both going to work hard this week,” he said. “We’re going to work for each other. If it will help the team, I’m all for it.”

Florida and Missouri (4-2, 1-1) are jam-packed in the middle of a crowded SEC east division. The Tigers were dominated 34-0 at home by Georgia over the weekend.

Both teams will look to get on track in a game that kicks off at 7 p.m.

Retired Supreme Court justice will hear Jameis Winston's Code of Conduct hearing

Florida State is using a retired state Supreme Court justice to preside over the Student Code of Conduct hearing involving star quarterback Jameis Winston, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

Three retired justices will be available for the sexual assault hearing, Mary Coburn, vice president of student affairs, told the paper. Winston and his accuser each are allowed to eliminate one justice. If they both choose the same justice, Florida State will choose from the remaining two.

The identity of the justice will be revealed when Winston appears for an information session regarding the alleged Student Code of Conduct violations later this week.

Winston and his attorney were informed Friday in a letter by Florida State interim president Garnett Stokes and Coburn that Winston “might be charged with one of four violations of FSU’s student conduct code regarding sexual conduct.” Winston and his attorney had five days to schedule an information hearing.

During that hearing, Winston will be presented with his rights and learn more about the conduct hearing. The conduct hearing will be held as soon as soon as possible after the informational hearing. That hearing will determine whether Winston will be charged with violating the school’s code of conduct.

State Attorney Willie Meggs ruled last year that there was insufficient evidence to press charges against Winston in an alleged sexual misconduct investigation involving a former female student in December 2012. The alleged victim said Winston raped her and filed a complaint with the federal Department of Education, which prompted a Title IX investigation.

Winston led the Seminoles to an undefeated season last year, a national title and won the Heisman Trophy. Florida State is 6-0 this year and Winston has started every game except against Clemson when he was suspended for yelling an obscene phrase in the student union.

Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld out for season with shoulder injury

Indiana coach Kevin Wilson announced some unfortunate news Monday.

Wilson revealed that Hoosiers starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his injured left shoulder.

According to Peegs.com, the injury occurred early in the second quarter of Indiana’s 45-29 road loss to Iowa on Saturday. Sudfeld, a junior from Modesto, Calif., was sacked by two Iowa defenders and landed hard on his non-throwing shoulder.

In six games in 2014, Sudfeld threw for 1,151 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Sudfeld split time with Tre Roberson in 2013 and threw for 2,523 yards, 21 touchdowns in nine interceptions. With Sudfeld looking like the Hoosiers’ top quarterback coming out of spring practice, Roberson opted to transfer to Illinois State in June.

When Sudfeld left the game Saturday, true freshman Chris Covington filled in and struggled. Covington, a dual-threat from Chicago, had appeared in three other games for the Hoosiers this season but did not throw a pass until Sudfeld went down. Against the Hawkeyes, he completed just 3-of-12 passes for 31 yards and two interceptions while running for 41 yards.

It looks like Covington will make his first career start for the 3-3 Hoosiers Saturday against No. 8 Michigan State in Indiana’s homecoming game. Wilson said that true freshman Zander Diamont and walk-on redshirt sophomore Nate Boudreau will also be in the mix at quarterback.

Report: Florida State will have linebacker Matthew Thomas against Notre Dame

FSU linebacker Matthew Thomas Florida State has lifted the suspension of redshirt freshman linebacker Matthew Thomas, according to Rivals’ site Warchant.com.

Thomas, a former five-star recruit, had been serving an indefinite suspension for a violation of team rules. He had missed the first six games of the season. But the fact that he will be available for Saturday’s top-five matchup against Notre Dame is great timing, especially for an FSU pass rush that has struggled at times this season.

Thomas had missed the season opener against Oklahoma State with an ankle injury prior to the announcement of the suspension.

Thomas played in the first four games of the 2013 season before suffering a shoulder injury that caused him to miss the rest of the year. He had four tackles.

Clemson explains how random Tigers fan appeared on Louisville bench

Lost in the shuffle of another wild weekend on the field was a strange incident at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium when the Tigers were hosting Louisville.

At some point during the third quarter, a random man in a Clemson t-shirt with a sideline credential was sitting on Louisville’s bench in the middle of Cardinals’ defensive huddle. The man was quickly removed after being discovered by Louisville staff members. Monday, the Clemson athletic department had offered an explanation for the incident.

The statement, issued to the Courier-Journal, said the man, a Clemson fan, somehow acquired a credential meant for a group that was allowed to be on the field at halftime.

"The individual had an authorized credential issued for a group allowed on the field for halftime," the statement said. "He is not a member of that group, and action will be taken against those individuals who were authorized to distribute the credentials. As an athletic department, the security of our fans and visitors are of the utmost importance, and we will continue to evaluate and reinforce visiting team bench security in future games."

If you missed it, here’s the video of the incident via The Crunch Zone, a Louisville fan site.

Louisville safety James Sample was in the defensive huddle when a teammate noticed the man, who didn’t really seem to cause anything other than a bit of confusion for the Cardinals sideline.

“I didn’t notice him until one of our linebackers said something,” Sample said. “I was like, ‘Dang.’ I didn’t know what he was doing.”

As far as the game goes, Clemson won 23-17.

With Todd Gurley situation unresolved, Georgia coach Mark Richt hopes RB Keith Marshall can return this week

While the investigation into Georgia’s Todd Gurley continues, Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt said Sunday that the star running back would practice with the team this week.

“Todd’s still on our team, yes,” Richt said per the Ledger-Enquirer.

Beyond that, Richt did not have any update about Gurley’s indefinite suspension for allegedly being compensated for signing autographs, a violation of NCAA rules. The team will move forward under the assumption that Gurley will not see the field again for the foreseeable future.

“I think we have to. We’ll start practicing. But whether Todd was there or not, we would do the same things,” Richt said.

The suspension for Gurley, who was considered a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, was announced last Thursday and multiple outlets reported that Gurley accepted money from at least one memorabilia dealer in exchange for autographed items.

“You know what I’d like to do, I’d like to talk about this next game, or we might have to end this (teleconference),” Richt said. “It’s not all about this (Gurley) stuff. I do not know anything, so my answer is I don’t know.”

Without Gurley, the Bulldogs did just fine in a dominant 34-0 road win at Missouri over the weekend with freshman Nick Chubb starting at running back. The 5-foot-10, 228-pound Chubb carried 38 times for 143 yards and a score.

Moving forward, Richt said some added depth could be on the way so Chubb doesn’t have to shoulder such a heavy load.

Junior Keith Marshall has been out the last three games with leg and ankle injuries, but he could return Saturday at Arkansas. Marshall missed most of last season with a torn ACL after racking up 759 yards and eight scores as a freshman in 2012.

“Just watching him run straight ahead last week he looked really good,” Richt said. “But I didn’t see him try to change directions or anything like that, no quick cutting motions or anything like that.”

If he can’t return this weekend, Richt said Marshall, along with freshman speedster Sony Michel (23 rushes, 223 yards, 3 TD) could be in line to return against Florida on November 1 following a bye week.

Until then, Chubb will lead the way with sophomore Brendan Douglas , who carried 13 times for 65 yards and a touchdown against Mizzou, providing depth.
