Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong declares for NFL draft

Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong (21) celebrates after scoring a touchdown during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Arizona, Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, in Tucson, Ariz. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri) Arizona State wide receiver Jaelen Strong will not return to school for his final season of eligibility. Instead, the redshirt junior announced through the university on Monday that he will enter the 2015 NFL draft.

Heading into Saturday’s Sun Bowl against Duke, Strong has 75 catches for 1,062 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Sun Devils this season, earning first-team All-Pac 12 honors. Last year, the 6-foot-3, 212-pound Strong caught 75 passes for 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns.

A native of Philadelphia, Strong transferred to Arizona State before the 2013 season after spending two years at Pierce College, a junior college in Los Angeles.

"Jaelen's enormous impact was felt from the first day he stepped on the practice field with us more than 16 months ago,” ASU head coach Todd Graham said in a statement. “His work ethic, attention to detail and overall football IQ are just a few of his attributes that make him such a special talent.

"It has been a great pleasure to watch him grow into the young man he has become - a leader off the field and a giver in his community. We look forward to one final game together and we wish him luck as he gets set to embark on the next chapter of his football career."

Strong’s 2,184 receiving yards ranks eighth in Arizona State history. He is projected by many draft experts to be a first-round pick.

“This has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” Strong said in a statement. “I’ve spoken to my family and we feel it is best for me to declare for the 2015 NFL Draft. First I would like to thank Coach Graham and the staff for believing in me from day one. I’d like to thank the Sun Devil Nation, the fans, and all of the people who work behind the scenes that I encounter everyday that have been like a family to me.

"Most importantly, I would like to thank my teammates, my brothers, for having my back through thick and thin. Finally, I’d like to thank Jean Boyd and his academic staff for their dedication to Sun Devil Football. My two years at Arizona State University have produced the best experiences of my life.”

Lattimore returns to South Carolina as student

Ugly brawl mars Memphis' 55-48 overtime win against BYU in Miami Beach Bowl

If the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl wanted to set the bar high for its future contests, it may have outdone itself.

The first bowl game for Miami Beach and the Marlins stadium went to double overtime before Memphis claimed a 55-48 win.

The win gave Memphis it’s first 10-win season since 1938. The program had combined to win 10 games during the past four seasons.

Unfortunately, the end of the game was marred by a bench-clearing brawl that included as much violence as the game had offense, still it was a contest for the ages and easily the best game of the early bowl season.

Memphis had a 38-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter and BYU looked all but out of it as it struggled to generate any consistent offense. The Tigers rallied from a 28-24 halftime deficit to take control of the game.

However, in the fourth quarter, three big mistakes by Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch and Memphis' special teams led to 17 points and BYU headed into the waning minutes of the game with a seven-point lead.

Lynch threw an interception early in the fourth quarter that BYU turned into a field goal. On the next possession, the Tigers fumbled the kickoff, which led to a disputed BYU touchdown that tied the game. BYU took the lead on a pick-6 with 7:48 remaining.

On the BYU score that tied the game, running back Paul Lasike not only appeared to be down at the 3-yard line, but he also didn’t appear to get in even after he launched himself toward the goal line.

The play was never reviewed and BYU took the score and the momentum.

However, Memphis composed itself late and Lynch found Keiwone Malone in the end zone with 45 seconds remaining.

BYU had a couple opportunities to win the game late in regulation, but missed on a desperation Hail Mary.

In overtime, Memphis’ defense held BYU to a 45-yard field goal and the Cougars had a similar defensive stand, which backed Memphis up for a 55-yard field goal attempt. Kick Jake Elliott, shanked his first attempt right, but BYU coach Bronco Mendehall called timeout. On his second try, Elliott nailed the 55-yarder right down the middle. It was struck so well, it would have been good from 65 yards.

On the first possession of the second overtime, Lynch found Roderick Proctor for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

On BYU’s possession, quarterback Christian Stewart threw an interception to end the game.

Lynch accounted for seven touchdowns, tying a bowl record set by West Virginia’s Geno Smith in the 2012 Orange Bowl.

As Memphis players were celebrating, many ran toward the BYU sideline, which didn’t sit well with the Cougars. Also, other small fights had broken out in the middle of the field between linemen that soon turned into scuffles with punches being thrown and players trying to stomp on each other. There was even a sucker punch by BYU’s Kai Nacua on Memphis’ Alan Cross, who was being held back by a Memphis coach. It took several minutes after the contest ended to break up the various melees.

Even though this was the end of the season for both teams, suspensions still can be handed out and leveled for the 2015 season. Many players were caught on video doing very bad things, so it’s fair to assume those returning players won’t be playing in their 2015 season openers.

Report: Colorado State 'closing in on a deal' to hire Georgia OC Mike Bobo as head coach

Aug 1, 2013; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Mike Bobo shown during practice at the University of Georgia. (Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports) Colorado State is reportedly hiring another SEC offensive coordinator to be its head coach.

According to Terry Frei of the Denver Post, the Rams are “closing in on a deal” to name Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo their next head coach. Bobo would replace Jim McElwain, the former Alabama offensive coordinator who was hired by Florida last month after three seasons at CSU.

The 40-year-old Bobo was a quarterback at Georgia from 1993-1997 and coached at his alma mater for all but one year since. His one year away from UGA was spent as the quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville State in 2000. After that season, Bobo returned to Georgia in 2001 where he served as quarterbacks coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2006.

According to Frei, Bobo went through final interviews on Sunday and could be formally introduced on Tuesday if he and CSU come to an agreement on Monday.

Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost has been rumored to be a candidate for the position, but according to Frei, Frost was “unlikely to be sold on coming to CSU.”

After going 10-2 during the regular season under McElwain, the Rams lost 45-10 to Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday. After the game, offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin, who was serving as interim coach, told the media that he and the rest of CSU’s staff had been given termination papers.

Tennessee walk-on Alex Ellis surprised with scholarship (Video)

At the end of a team meeting, Tennessee head coach Butch Jones told his players that he’d be giving out a few gifts to players who had great showings during bowl practice.

The first player Jones called up, walk-on tight end Alex Ellis, received a gift all walk-ons dream of: a scholarship.

It was a very emotional moment for Ellis, who is in his fourth year with the program.

“I’ve been dreaming about this every day of my life,” Ellis said, fighting tears.

After not seeing the field during his first three seasons with the program, Ellis, a 6-foot-4, 238-pound redshirt junior from Del Mar, Del., appeared in all 12 games for the Volunteers this year and even made his first career start against Kentucky on Nov. 15.

Ellis registered six catches for 115 yards on the season, including a 31-yard touchdown on a fake field goal against Missouri on Nov. 22.

After going 6-6 this season, the Vols will play Iowa in the TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 2.

WKU and CMU players swim with dolphins at Bahamas Bowl (Video)

A few days before the inaugural Bahamas Bowl on Christmas Eve, the players and coaches from Western Kentucky and Central Michigan got a chance to take in what the tropical paradise has to offer.

After taking in the sights, a few players from each team got in the water and got up close and personal with some dolphins. The players were admittedly nervous, but with the dolphin trainers close by, they quickly got more comfortable.

One player in particular, Central Michigan tight end Deon Butler, looks like he had a really good time with his new dolphin friend.

We already got a glimpse earlier this month of how excited the CMU players were to play in the Bahamas. This brings that all to fruition.

The game, played at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau – the capital city of the Bahamas – will kick off at noon on Wednesday. Both teams are 7-5.

Marshall QB Rakeem Cato to wear jersey number of injured teammate

Nov 15, 2014; Huntington, WV, USA; Marshall Thundering Herd quarterback Rakeem Cato (12) passes for a touchdown to receiver Deon-Tay McManus against the Rice Owls. (Rob Leifheit-USA TODAY Sports) In his final collegiate game, Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato will ditch his familiar No. 12 jersey.

Instead, according to the Herald-Dispatch, Cato will wear No. 31 when the Thundering Herd takes on Northern Illinois in Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl. He’ll wear the new number to honor a teammate, junior linebacker Evan McKelvey. McKelvey suffered an ACL injury on Oct. 4 against Old Dominion and several of his teammates have worn his No. 31 throughout the season. Cato will be the first offensive player to do so.

“We want Evan to know that we’re behind him for the whole season and support him, no matter what,” Cato said Saturday. “The defense has done a great job of wearing it all year. I just thought it was the perfect time for me to wear it.”

A teammate wore McKelvey’s number in every game since he went down except one – the team’s 67-66 overtime loss to Western Kentucky, Marshall’s only loss of the season. McKelvey said that it “means a lot” that his teammates wear his jersey number.

“The fact that Cato’s wearing it, that’s a big thing,” McKelvey said. “Why not in the bowl game, right? He’s a big-time player.”

Cato did not hesitate to give up his No. 12 for his final game, either.

“I know how much Evan McKelvey really loves the game of football and he’d kill to be on the field with us Tuesday,” Cato said.

Tuesday’s game kicks off at 6:00 p.m. ET at FAU Stadium.

Ole Miss signee Chad Kelly arrested after alleged scuffle with police

Clemson quarterback Chad Kelly signals a play during the first half of the Tigers' NCAA college football spring game at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday, Apr. 12, 2014. Head coach Dabo Swinney announced Monday, April 14, that Kelly was dismissed from the team. (AP Photo/Anderson Independent-Mail, Mark Crammer) Less than a week after signing with Ole Miss, Chad Kelly is back in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Kelly, the former Clemson quarterback who won a junior college national championship at East Mississippi Community College this season, was arrested early Sunday morning in Buffalo and is facing an array of charges. According to the Buffalo News, Kelly’s charges include “third-degree assault, second-degree harassment, second-degree menacing, resisting arrest, fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.” All charges are misdemeanors or violations.

The charges came after the 20-year-old Kelly refused to leave a Buffalo, N.Y. bar at around 3:15 a.m. Kelly's friend was thrown out of the same bar earlier and "tried to re-enter," police said. According to a police report, Kelly fought with two bouncers and punched one in the face, and then told the bouncers, “I’m going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place.”

In response to that threat, Buffalo police pulled over a vehicle in which Kelly was a passenger. Kelly then fought with police.

Per the Buffalo News:

Kelly was forcibly removed from the vehicle, officers said. Police said Kelly kicked and tried to swing at officers as they removed him from the vehicle. They said he resisted getting into a patrol vehicle and struggled with staff at central booking.

Kelly was arraigned in Buffalo court and later released without bail on Sunday.

Kelly, the nephew of great Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, signed a scholarship to play at Ole Miss on Wednesday after a season at East Mississippi Community College. Kelly transferred to EMCC after being dismissed by Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney in April for “conduct detrimental to the program” and having a “pattern of behavior that is not consistent with the values of (Clemson’s) program.”

Kelly threw for 3,905 yards and 47 touchdowns at EMCC this season and was expected to compete for the starting role with the Rebels in 2015.

"We followed Chad throughout the year and we were very, very impressed with the job he did running the offense for East,” Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said last week. “Probably toward end of year, once I had some face-to-face conversations with him, he came to a couple games and then the official visit, and I did my home visit with he and his family after their championship game, and I was convinced he was the guy we wanted to go on.”

In response to the news, Freeze said on Sunday night that the program is "gathering facts on the matter."
