A Case of the Mondays: A look back at Week 3 love, hot takes and memorable moments
Every Monday, Dr. Saturday editor Graham Watson looks back on the weekend that was and decides what she loved, what she hated (I have all the hot takes) and what she can’t wait to see again.
THE LOVE
Welcome back, Bryce Petty
I’m not gonna claim it was my column on Petty’s dwindling Heisman chances that got him off the bench and in the game against Buffalo last Friday, but I know it totally was. As I wrote last week, Petty needed to come off the IR and get back into the Heisman race if he wanted to keep pace with his competitors.
And boy did he.
Petty completed 23-of-34 attempts for 416 yards and four touchdowns in his first game back after suffering two cracked vertebrae in his spine during the season opener against SMU. Petty missed last week’s game against Northwestern State and watched his backup, Seth Russell, throw for more than 400 yards in a half. That raised questions about whether it was Petty’s skill or coach Art Briles system that made Petty so good. But Petty quieted his doubters for now. Even though it was against Buffalo, it was still a quality outing. And now, he has a bye week to get healthy again before starting Big 12 play against Iowa State.
Hey, look, Arkansas beat a Power Five team
It was the moment Arkansas fans had been waiting for, a win against a team from one of the Power Five conferences. The Razorbacks ran all over Texas Tech to the tune of a 49-28 victory and the first win against a team from a major conference since beating Kentucky on Oct. 13, 2012. It also marked Arkansas’ first back-to-back wins since early October in 2012.
It’s not quite time to strike up the band and anoint Arkansas a legitimate SEC threat — we did all see what Auburn did to it in the season opener — but it’s play against the Red Raiders was light years ahead of any game it played a year ago and the chances of it being competitive in the SEC are much higher.
As for Texas Tech, well, things just ain’t been the same since they gave coach Kliff Kingsbury that contract extension.
Keep rowing that boat Western Michigan
This might be the second time Western Michigan has been mentioned in this column, but that’s because I’m just so darn proud of the way the Broncos are playing this year. And no, I have no affiliation to the team, but I am a big fan of coach P.J. Fleck and his rebuilding project.
The Broncos beat Idaho 45-33 to give them their first victory of the season and match their win total from a year ago. There’s no doubt this team is much better than last year’s squad and it could be poised for a nice little run in the Mid-American Conference this year. At the very least, the Broncos’ high-powered offense should be a good “over” pick for those gamblers out there.
THE HATE (hot takes a-plenty)
Why Rutgers fans, why?
In an attempt to create some sort of rivalry against Penn State for its Big Ten home opener this past weekend, Rutgers fans decided to use the Jerry Sandusky scandal as a way to mock Penn State.
Stay classy Rutgers. Kids are going to see that. How will you explain? http://ift.tt/1qWQE5e
— Sandy (@TweetsfromSandy) September 13, 2014
What were these people thinking? Has common sense and common decency gone totally out the window? What if that was your child? These people should be shamed and should really look at their lives and wonder exactly what is wrong that would make them think something like that would be funny.
Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann apologized for the members of her fan base that participated in this ignorant behavior and for her social media gurus that decided to repost the photos on the school’s football Facebook page.
I guess this is the only thing to use when you try to make a rivalry out of one that doesn’t actually exist. The last time these two teams met before last Saturday was 1995 and Penn State owned a 22-2 edge in all their meetings. Oh, make that 23-2.
Someone explain Tim Beckman’s logic
I admire Illinois coach Tim Beckman for having a bright-side-of-life attitude, but when it makes you say dumb things publicly, no one wins.
After Illinois’ 44-19 loss to Washington last weekend, Beckman had two ingenious quotes:
“If you look at the second half, we won.”
“You take out 21 points on three plays and we’re in this football game.”
I don’t even need to point out the faulty logic in the first quote and in the second, well, you take out 21 points and Illinois still loses by four.
The Illini were manhandled by a better team, plain and simple. It’s not the first time and, after watching this team through three games this season, it certainly won’t be the last. Don’t try to put a spin on it. Don’t try to make everyone feel better. Just admit that you got whooped and move on. At least then, you don’t turn a bad loss into fodder for Monday morning jokes.
The struggle at Texas is real, ya’ll
Texas managed to do something I’ve never seen in a college football game — or any non-youth football game — mess up the coin toss.
Prior to Saturday’s game Between UCLA and Texas, the Bruins won the coin toss and elected to defer their choice to the second half. Texas was given the option to either receive the opening kickoff or go on defense. Most teams in this situation would receive the kick. The logic being that UCLA would receive the kick in the second half. But not Texas, no, it chose to kick the ball away and thus didn’t receive the ball during in either half.
The official even tried to explain to Texas captain Desmond Jackson that what he was doing was the wrong move and Jackson just stuck to script. UCLA received the ball to start the first half and to start the second half, something none of us might ever see again in our lifetimes.
Here was coach Charlie Strong’s response after the game:
"I said, 'What happened?' He said, 'I don't know, coach. I was just so hyped up.”
And we thought Strong’s biggest challenge was going to be changing the locker room culture. Apparently, he has to teach his guys the rules, too.
LET’S DO IT AGAIN
Oklahoma's first halves are must-see TV
If you’ve missed the first half of any Oklahoma game this season, you’ve missed dominance that has been so much fun to watch.
During their three games this season, the Sooners have outscored their opponents 55-0 in the first quarter and 82-10 in the first half. Tennessee’s touchdown in the second quarter last week was the first first-half touchdown the Sooners have allowed this season. Coach Bob Stoops has employed a strategy that puts his opponents in a deep hole early and then he really lets his defense hold down the fort in the second half. So far the strategy has worked because the Sooners have not faced a team that can match it offensively. But that could change this week when they travel to West Virginia, a team that is averaging 39 points per game. However, the Mountaineers also have allowed an average of 35 points to the FBS teams it’s faced so far.
How fun is the SEC East?
If last week’s games between South Carolina and Georgia, and Florida and Kentucky are any measure, the SEC East might be the closest contested divisional race of any major conference in the country. Those two games were among the most interesting of the weekend and really either one could have flip-flopped the winners and losers. With the exception of Vanderbilt, which needed UMass to miss 22-yard field goal to secure its first victory, every team in that conference appears competitive. In past years, it would be easy to say that one team was ahead of the others, but I don’t think you can say that this season, at least not yet. As of right now, Week 5, when almost every East team is playing another East team, is shaping up to be must-watch television.
Penn State in the College Football Playoff?
Anyone who was excited to see the NCAA restore Penn State’s bowl eligibility last week was probably downright giddy after the Nittany Lions defeated Rutgers to not only secure their first Big Ten win, but also get halfway to bowl eligibility.
And let’s be honest, Penn State might be the second-best team in the Big Ten East behind Michigan State. With the exception of the game against the Spartans, every game is totally winnable on the Penn State schedule. Could Penn State turn restored bowl eligibility into a spot in the College Football Playoff? No, get that thought out of your head right now. But this has the possibility of being the team’s first double-digit win season since 2009. I say that and watch it lose to UMass this weekend.

Iowa State tackle Jacob Gannon back with team after receiving treatment for anxiety
Less than two weeks after it was revealed that starting offensive tackle Jacob Gannon had left the team, it was announced Monday that Gannon is back with the program.
A reason was not given for his departure, but Gannon, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound senior, divulged Monday that he was recently diagnosed with anxiety and now feels well enough to return to the team.
“I have been recently diagnosed with anxiety,” Gannon said in a statement. “I am receiving treatment for my condition and I am looking forward to being a part of the football team. I want to thank Coach Rhoads and my teammates for their support.”
Gannon started the team’s season-opener against North Dakota State before his departure was announced on Sept. 4.
“We are glad Jacob is back with the Cyclone football family,” said head coach Paul Rhoads. “We are behind Jacob 100 percent and will continue to support him throughout the process.”
Gannon, a native of Iowa City, started eight games for the Cyclones in 2013 and earned two starts in both 2012 and 2011. He was also a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection in 2013.
Though Gannon’s return was good news for the Cyclones, the program also received some bad news on Monday. Rhoads said that reserve lineman Jacob Dunning ruptured his patellar tendon and wide receiver P.J. Harris broke a bone in his leg. Dunning and Harris, both sophomores, will likely miss the rest of the season. Both players were injured in the Cyclones’ win over Iowa over the weekend.
Harris caught nine passes for 55 yards this season and is the second ISU receiver to go down with a serious injury this season. Quenton Bundrage, the team’s No. 1 target, tore his ACL earlier this month.
The Cyclones, now 1-2, have a bye this week before hosting Baylor on Sept. 27.

Utah State QB Chuckie Keeton suffered minor knee injury, will miss game against Arkansas State
Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton suffered a knee injury against Wake Forest this past weekend and while coach Matt Wells said there was no structural damage, he did say Keeton would not play against Arkansas State this weekend.
“Chuckie is fine from a health standpoint,” Wells said during his weekly press conference. “The ACL is intact, everything is good, it’s just banged up. We’re going to sit him out this week and next week, then reevaluate and see where he’s at during the BYU week.”
The Aggies have a bye before facing BYU on Oct. 3.
Late in the first half against Wake Forest, Keeton was running to his left, went down and got up slowly. After halftime, he returned to the sideline in street clothes.
Keeton suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last year that caused him to miss eight games last season.
Darell Garretson, who stepped in for Keeton a year ago, finished the Wake Forest game. He completed 11-of-16 passes for 121 yards, a touchdown and an interception and helped the Aggies secure a 36-24 victory. Garretson was 6-2 last year.
“Darell has a tremendous amount of confidence, as do his teammates,” Wells said. “We’re very confident in him in his talents and leadership abilities. Just like last year, we’ll have to play very well on defense. We’re going to have to find ways to be difference-makers on special teams, and the guys on offense are going to have to play a little bit better around him. The recipe is the same, the ingredients are just a little different. I feel good about Darell, he’s in a good spot.”

Georgia RB Nick Chubb will be out Saturday vs. Troy after thumb surgery
Georgia has one of the deepest running back corps in the country, but the depth will take a hit in the coming weeks after freshman Nick Chubb underwent surgery on his thumb on Monday.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, surgical screws were inserted into Chubb’s left thumb to repair a fracture. Chubb originally injured the thumb in practice last week, but he still managed to play in the Bulldogs’ loss to South Carolina. He registered 34 yards on four carries.
Chubb will miss the game against Troy on Saturday, but his long-term prognosis is not immediately known.
“He’s going good; he’s just resting right now,” Chubb’s mother, Lavelle, told the AJC. “They said they would see how he’s doing (Tuesday) before they make that decision (about how long he’ll be out).”
Chubb has only carried the ball eight times this season, but has rushed for 104 yards at 13 yards per carry.
His biggest play of the year was a 47-yard touchdown run against Clemson in Week 1.
The 5-foot-10, 228-pound Chubb shares carries with junior Keith Marshall and fellow true freshman Sony Michel in the backfield behind Heisman candidate Todd Gurley.
A native of Cedartown, Ga., Chubb was a four-star recruit and was rated as the No. 35 overall prospect in the 2014 class by Rivals.

Central Michigan RB Thomas Rawls suspended indefinitely, WR Andrew Flory dismissed
Central Michigan running back Thomas Rawls has been suspended indefinitely by the program after he was arrested Sunday. The arrest stemmed from an April 18 incident in which the senior allegedly stole a purse and several credit cards.
According to the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun, Rawls was issued three felony charges on May 16. He was held in jail “briefly” and was able to post a $1,500 bond. Rawls transferred to CMU from Michigan in July, so his arrest took place before he was a member of the Chippewas’ football program and a student at the university.
He is facing three felony charges for larceny, possession of stolen credit cards and stealing credit cards. The stolen cards include “a Visa card and three store credit cards.”
According to the arrest warrant, Rawls was at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, Mich., when he and two other men saw “an abandoned purse in a chair.” Rawls then sat on the purse and handed it to one of the men he was with. The man then put the purse in a bag before the trio left the casino.
Rawls then used one of the stolen credit cards to “buy sub sandwiches at a casino sub shop.” Later on, “the group bought $33.77 worth of gas with a credit card from the stolen purse.”
Rawls, who has gained 276 yards and three touchdowns on 56 carries this season, did not play over the weekend against Syracuse.
“Central Michigan running back Thomas Rawls will not play in today’s game against Syracuse as CMU continues to review an issue that came to our attention Friday. Central Michigan will not have any further comment at this time,” the school said in a statement released two hours prior to kickoff.
Head coach Dan Enos subsequently announced Rawls’ indefinite suspension on Monday.
Additionally, the program also announced Monday that junior wide receiver Andrew Flory has been dismissed. Per the Morning Sun, the program indefinitely suspended Flory last week for a “violation of team rules.” Flory was previously suspended over the summer after being arrested with former teammate Ryan Oruche for stealing DVDs and snacks from Walmart.
Flory caught 32 passes for 384 yards and two touchdowns in 2013, but did not see the field this season, though he had been practicing before his most recent suspension.
Central Michigan beat Chattanooga and Purdue in its first two games before Saturday’s 40-3 home loss to Syracuse. The Chippewas will face Kansas on the road Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Drake has a new college football crush as he performs in two different Marcus Mariota jerseys (Photo)
Is there a bigger bandwagon fan in college athletics than rapper Drake?
Jimmy Wheelchair’s love affair with former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was well documented and everyone saw him at the Final Four reppin’ Kentucky. But now that we’re in a new school year, Drake allegiances have shifted again.
With Manziel gone to the NFL — and riding the bench — Drake had to find a new man-crush and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is the lucky guy.
He only rolls with winner, you know.
Drake wore not one, but two different Mariota jerseys during his concert this past weekend.

— Word On Road (@WordOnRd) September 14, 2014
I mean, it makes sense. Mariota is the top quarterback in the country right now, he plays for the hottest team and he’s the early leader in the Heisman race. Oh, and Oregon’s uniforms are cool, so there’s that.
While we’re sure Mariota is flattered, I doubt we’ll be seeing him partying it up with Drake and his crew. That doesn’t really seem like Mariota’s scene and we’re sure he’s learned a lot from Manziel’s unwanted publicity and public outcry that has come with it.
No, Mariota is probably just gonna stick with his yoga and golf classes and leave it at that.
Sadly, Drake will have to be a fan from afar, but don’t be surprised if Drake ends up on the Oregon sideline if the Ducks make it to the national championship.

When star UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley went down with an elbow injury in Saturday night’s game against Texas, backup Jerry Neuheisel, the son of former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, was brought into the game.
The younger Neuheisel threw two second-half touchdown passes and led the Bruins to a come-from-behind 20-17 win. Jerry, who now works as an analyst for Pac-12, watched anxiously from the network’s studio.
His reactions were fantastic.
In all, the sophomore completed 23-of-30 passes for 178 yards in the third game action of his career. Hundley’s injury doesn’t appear to be serious and the Bruins have a bye this upcoming weekend, which will give him some extra time to heal. The Bruins’ next game is a Thursday night game against Arizona State on Sept. 25.
If Hundley can’t go, Neuheisel will get his first career start.

Iowa State's offensive line posts shirtless picture with Cy-Hawk Trophy and it is amazing (Photo)
Iowa State’s come-from-behind win against in-state rival Iowa was a highlight in what has otherwise been a miserable start to the season. So how did the offensive line decide to celebrate the 20-17 victory? By taking a shirtless picture in the Iowa end zone, of course.
Let’s take a second to dissect this photo, shall we? First, the guy on the right (Daniel Burton, we think) owns this picture. I mean, he is everything. There are two guys flexing, one kissing his bicep and one doing the Rocky championship pose. And then, of course, there’s offensive line coach Brandon Blaney, also shirtless.
This was the third time in the past four seasons Iowa State captured the Cy-Hawk Trophy and the second time it has won it in Iowa’s stadium. Each of those last four games has been decided by single digits.
And to add a little extra salt into the Hawkeyes wound:

Oklahoma running back Keith Ford out 2-3 weeks
Oklahoma will be without its leading rusher against West Virginia on Saturday.
Head coach Bob Stoops said Monday that sophomore Keith Ford will be out for the next two or three weeks after suffering a slight fracture to his ankle in the Sooners’ win over Tennessee.
“He won’t play this week for sure. After that it’s a little unsure,” Stoops said, per SoonerScoop.com.
Ford left the field during the first half and had his ankle re-taped, but he eventually was taken out during the fourth quarter of the 34-10 win. Stoops said that Ford suffered a “small fracture” on a “non-weight bearing bone” in his ankle.
“It can be two weeks to three,” Stoops said. “You just don’t know for sure.”
Given the timetable offered by Stoops and the fact that No. 4 Oklahoma has a bye on the weekend of Sept. 27, it is possible that Ford will only miss two games – Saturday’s Big 12 opener with West Virginia and an Oct. 4 road matchup with TCU. If that comes to fruition, Ford would return for the Red River Rivalry against Texas on Oct. 11.
The Sooners’ offense has featured three different backs through three games this season, but Ford had received the most touches. On 34 carries, Ford has racked up 194 yards and five scores while also catching six passes for 100 yards and another score.
In Ford’s absence, impressive true freshman Samaje Perine (32 carries, 177 yards, 1 TD) and sophomore Alex Ross (21 carries, 132 yards, 3 TDs) will see increased touches for the 3-0 Sooners.
Stoops was confident that the 5-foot-11, 243-pound Perine could take over the role as OU’s feature back.
“We love him. He’s an excellent runner. Even when there’s not much there he finds a way to make something happen with his power.”

Fans create banners and shirts mocking Jerry Sandusky, Rutgers posts pics on social media
Last week, Rutgers tried desperately to create a rivalry-like atmosphere for its Big Ten home-opening game against Penn State. These two teams were rivals once, but the series was dominated by Penn State and the teams hadn’t played since 1995.
Still, the school urged fans to show their vitriol for its “rival” and it got a little out of hand.
Instead of keeping the rivalry about what was happening on the field, fans used signs and T-shirts to reference former coach Jerry Sandusky, who is currently in jail for sexual assaulting several children, including some on the Penn State campus. Included in the collection was a man wearing a “Beat Ped State” shirt standing next to a child.
What’s worse is that these fans were encouraged by Rutgers’ social media accounts, which retweeted the pictures of the signs and T-shirts on Twitter and added them to the school’s official Facebook page for the football team.
The photos were deleted, in fact the entire album from the game was deleted, but here are a few screenshots of what was posted:

Fans are going to be fans and tastelessness is part of the deal. Sometimes people just don’t have the common sense to know that what happened at Penn State was not a joke. It was a very serious thing that destroyed the lives of several young men and to mock it, well, it shows a basic lack of compassion and respect. But Rutgers fans aren’t unique in this. Several fans of opposing teams have taken cheap shots at Penn State. However, this is the first time we’ve seen a school encourage it by giving fans a forum to put these cheap shots on display.
Not sure Rutgers should be acting all high and mighty these days considering it had to do some PR to distance itself from the school’s leading rusher Ray Rice, who was suspended from the NFL last week for punching his now-wife in the face and knocking her unconscious.
Pretty sure we didn’t see Penn State promoting the video of the Ray Rice incident on its Facebook page.
What Rutgers did — no matter how brief — was childish, insensitive and stupid. It owes Penn State University an apology and, more importantly, it owes an apology to the people affected in the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Miami QB Kevin Olsen arrested and charged with DUI
Miami backup quarterback Kevin Olsen was arrested and charged with DUI and possession of a fake or stolen driver’s license over the weekend.
According to the Palm Beach Post, the 19-year-old Olsen was booked “after 4 a.m. Monday morning” and is currently being held on $6,000 bond.
Miami Hurricanes QB Kevin Olsen arrested this morning for DUI and possession of stolen drivers license. http://ift.tt/1sasbHB
— Andy Slater (@AndySlater) September 15, 2014
Olsen, a redshirt freshman, has not played in a game for the Hurricanes but was expected to compete for the starting job this season after Ryan Williams injured his knee in April. Instead, news emerged that Olsen had failed a drug test and was suspended for the last two games of the 2013 season and the 2014 season opener against Louisville.
He was briefly taking first-team reps in the spring after Williams’ injury, but has since been passed on the depth chart by freshman Brad Kaaya and Kansas transfer Jake Heaps.
Miami head coach Al Golden said last week before the Arkansas State game that Olsen had a “really good” preseason and showed “growth” in the last six months.
“The suspension – just because it happened now – does not reflect all the growth that he had,” Golden said. “I want to make sure we’re clear on that, he’s had a lot of growth here in the last half-year and certainly in the last four months. He has made a lot of progress and hopefully Kevin can continue to do that for us.”
A native of Wayne, N.J., Olsen was a four-star recruit in Miami’s 2013 class. The school has yet to comment on his weekend arrest.

SEC releases statement defending officials in Florida-Kentucky game (Video)
The most controversial moment of the weekend came in the first overtime of the Florida-Kentucky game. After Kentucky scored a touchdown on its possession to start the extra frame, the Gators were facing a fourth-and-seven from the 10-yard line.
As Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel received the play call from the sideline, the play clock was quickly winding down. The Gators managed to barely get the play off in time and Driskel threw a touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson to tie the game.
However, the instant replay showed that the play clock had appeared to reach zero just before the ball was snapped. Florida eventually went on to win the game 36-30 in triple-overtime, and Kentucky was not pleased that the Gators were not issued a 5-yard delay of game penalty.
In response to the outcry from Kentucky, the SEC released a statement Sunday in defense of the officials.
The statement, in full, reads:
At the request of the University of Kentucky, consistent with SEC protocol, the conference office reviewed the fourth down play in the first overtime of the Kentucky-Florida game and has determined the officials applied the proper mechanics and guidelines that are in place to determine when a flag should be thrown for delay of game. The back judge is responsible for delay of game calls. The procedure for the back judge is for his eyes to stay on the clock when it nears zero. When the clock hits zero, he immediately looks from the clock to the ball. If the ball is moving, there is no delay of game. If the ball is stationary, a delay of game penalty is called.
Here’s the video of the play, courtesy of Saturday Down South. We’ll let you be the judge.
It’s hard to fault the back judge on the play when he has to make the call in a fraction of a second. Human error is part of the equation in a situation like that. This happens a few times in every game, it just happened to be at the most critical juncture of this particular game. It’s a tough break for Kentucky.

Reports: Arizona State QB Taylor Kelly not expected to play against UCLA
According to multiple reports, Arizona State senior quarterback Taylor Kelly is not expected to play in the team’s Sept. 25 home matchup against UCLA due to a foot injury sustained in Saturday’s win at Colorado.
Sun Devils head coach Todd Graham said he was “very concerned” about the injury, but according to the Arizona Republic and ESPN’s Joe Schad, Kelly is only expected to miss one or two games.
The Republic’s Doug Haller is reporting that Kelly “has a chance” to play at USC on Oct. 4. If he’s not available against the Trojans, “the Sun Devils expect” Kelly to return in the team’s following game on Oct. 18 against Stanford.
Kelly’s right foot injury took place in the third quarter against the Buffaloes after he had already thrown for 195 yards and three touchdowns. After limping off the field, Kelly returned to the sideline with crutches and a boot on his right foot. The program has not revealed the specifics of Kelly's injury.
Kelly, a 6-foot-2, 211-pound dual-threat quarterback, has started 30 games for Arizona State in his career. He had thrown for 625 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 168 yards and two scores this season. In 2013, he threw for 3,635 yards and 28 touchdowns while running for 608 yards and nine scores.
With it looking like Kelly will be out against UCLA, junior Mike Bercovici will likely start for the first time in his career. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Bercovici, a junior, has attempted just 24 passes in his collegiate career. In three appearances this season, he has completed 9-of-17 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown.
