Iowa State tackle Jacob Gannon back with team after receiving treatment for anxiety

Less than two weeks after it was revealed that starting offensive tackle Jacob Gannon had left the team, it was announced Monday that Gannon is back with the program.

A reason was not given for his departure, but Gannon, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound senior, divulged Monday that he was recently diagnosed with anxiety and now feels well enough to return to the team.

“I have been recently diagnosed with anxiety,” Gannon said in a statement. “I am receiving treatment for my condition and I am looking forward to being a part of the football team. I want to thank Coach Rhoads and my teammates for their support.”

Gannon started the team’s season-opener against North Dakota State before his departure was announced on Sept. 4.

“We are glad Jacob is back with the Cyclone football family,” said head coach Paul Rhoads. “We are behind Jacob 100 percent and will continue to support him throughout the process.”

Gannon, a native of Iowa City, started eight games for the Cyclones in 2013 and earned two starts in both 2012 and 2011. He was also a first-team academic All-Big 12 selection in 2013.

Though Gannon’s return was good news for the Cyclones, the program also received some bad news on Monday. Rhoads said that reserve lineman Jacob Dunning ruptured his patellar tendon and wide receiver P.J. Harris broke a bone in his leg. Dunning and Harris, both sophomores, will likely miss the rest of the season. Both players were injured in the Cyclones’ win over Iowa over the weekend.

Harris caught nine passes for 55 yards this season and is the second ISU receiver to go down with a serious injury this season. Quenton Bundrage, the team’s No. 1 target, tore his ACL earlier this month.

The Cyclones, now 1-2, have a bye this week before hosting Baylor on Sept. 27.
