Louisville star WR DeVante Parker likely to play against Clemson

Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said Monday that star receiver DeVante Parker could be back for Saturday’s game against Clemson.

BP on DeVante Parker for Clemson: There is a good chance. He's been running routes for over a week. Off day today & he'll practice tomorrow.

— LouisvilleFootball (@UofLFootball) October 6, 2014

BP on DeVante Parker: I think he's going to be good to go based on the info from the medical staff. He ran routes in practice last night.

— LouisvilleFootball (@UofLFootball) October 6, 2014

Parker suffered a fractured bone in his left foot — an injury that required surgery — during practice in August and has yet to play a game this season.

Parker, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound senior, led the Cardinals in receiving yards and touchdowns last year. In absence the Cardinals are 5-1.

Petrino said he wasn’t sure who would potentially be throwing to Parker on Saturday. Both Reggie Bonnafon and Will Gardner will practice this week. Gardner was the team’s starter before being missing the past two games with injury. Bonnafon has filled in admirably and is 2-0 as a starter.

Northwestern unveils new 'gothic' uniforms for Nebraska game (Photos)

For its October 18 homecoming game against Nebraska, Northwestern will wear new uniforms with a pretty unique look.

The uniform combination is called “Northwestern Gothic,” and is supposed to be a reflection of Northwestern’s campus. It has a black, purple and gold color scheme that dates back to the school’s old colors before purple became the school’s official color.

According to a release from the school, “the arches on the shoulder are reflective of the architecture throughout campus” while the jersey and pants “both have ivy detailing like so many of the structures throughout the University.”

The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back impressive wins over Penn State and Wisconsin after struggling to a 1-2 start to the season. Pat Fitzgerald’s team, now 3-2, will travel to Minnesota Saturday to take on the Gophers.

The leg injury to BYU QB Taysom Hill was worse than expected

BYU quarterback Taysom Hill had successful surgery Sunday to fix the broken leg he suffered against Utah State on Friday night, but during surgery doctors learned the injury was worse than originally feared.

According to coach Bronco Mendenhall, every ligament in Hill’s leg was shredded and he needed a plate and eight screws to stabilize the bone.

Despite the grim discovery, Hill was positive following his surgery.

Surgery was a success! Thanks to my doctor and his staff, I'm on my way to a full recovery! Grateful to my sweet wife, family & friends!

— Taysom Hill (@T_Hill4) October 5, 2014

Initially, BYU noted that Hill would miss three or four months while recovering, but that was before it knew about the torn ligaments. BYU has not issued an updated recovering timeline.

Hill, a junior, was scrambling right in the second quarter when Utah State safety Brian Suite pulled him down and landed awkwardly on Hill’s lower left leg. Hill limped off the field before eventually being carted to the locker room.

Hill was a darkhorse candidate for the Heisman Trophy. He was 4-0 as the starter coming into the Utah State game and had amassed 975 passing yards, 463 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns.

Christian Stewart, a senior, replaced Hill against Utah State and threw three interceptions. He will be the starter moving forward.

Michigan starting running back Derrick Green out for season

The hits keep coming for Michigan football.

Head coach Brady Hoke announced Monday that starting running back Derrick Green will miss the rest of the season due to a broken clavicle suffered during Saturday night’s 26-24 loss on the road at Rutgers.

Green, a 5-foot-11, 227-pound sophomore, is the team’s leading rusher on the season with 471 yards and three touchdowns on 82 attempts. He gained 74 yards on 12 carries against the Scarlet Knights Saturday night, but went down with the injury late in the contest.

With Green out, Michigan (2-4, 0-2 Big Ten) now lists sophomore De’Veon Smith as its starting running back heading into this weekend’s game against Penn State at home. The 5-foot-11, 223-pound Smith leads the Wolverines with four rushing touchdowns this season. Overall, he has gained 282 yards on 47 carries – a six yards per carry average.

Behind Smith on the depth chart are redshirt junior Justice Hayes (19 carries, 101 yards) and sophomore Drake Johnson (three carries, 28 yards).

Smith registered 10 carries for 31 yards and a score against Rutgers, while Hayes ran twice for five yards.

In addition to announcing Green’s injury, Hoke said that senior Devin Gardner will start for the Wolverines at quarterback against the 4-1 Nittany Lions. Gardner, a senior, was benched for the Minnesota game but returned to the starting lineup over the weekend when he threw for 178 yards and ran for 40 yards and two scores in the loss.

Florida cancelled its weekly press conference about 45 minutes before it was scheduled to begin. The university is expected to address the situation later Monday afternoon.

Harris, a freshman, helped the Gators to a 10-9 win against Tennessee last weekend. Harris led the Gators on their only two scoring drives, including the game-winning field goal, after replacing ineffective quarterback Jeff Driskel.

Coach Will Muschamp didn’t say whether Harris would be the starter going forward, but did note that quarterbacking situation would be evaluated this week.

Notre Dame issues statement on suspended players, won't reveal results of honor code hearings

The honor code hearings for the Notre Dame players under investigation for academic fraud were completed on Friday and the school said Sunday it will disclose its findings to the NCAA, but will not publically reveal any punishments for the players.

Notre Dame vice president of public affairs Paul Browne released a lengthy statement offering limited details of the investigation that included reviewing “extensive exhibits” and “voluminous material” on the alleged academic dishonesty involving KeiVarae Russell, Ishaq Williams DaVaris Daniels, Kendall Moore and Eilar Hardy.

Though the results of the hearings are confidential, Browne said the five players may reveal the results if they choose. Browne also said the school would “voluntarily impose sanctions” if the student-athletes competed in games while ineligible.

Part of the statement, via NBC, reads:

Hearings for those withheld from football were completed on Friday. Decisions will be communicated individually to affected student-athletes and other students alike, as deliberations on each case conclude. As with other student academic records, the results of the review are confidential, and the University will not disclose them, although affected students may if they so choose. If it is determined that student-athletes would have been ineligible during past competition, Notre Dame will voluntarily impose appropriate sanctions, report our findings to the NCAA, and await its independent review.

Browne explained that the investigation was rather lengthy because it involved multiple students when a review of potential academic fraud ordinarily “involves one student and one academic department.”

The principal purpose of the Honor Code process is to educate our students as to the importance of academic integrity. The process is time-consuming because it is thorough, as it must be to ensure integrity and fairness. Having said that, we recognize it can be difficult for students, regardless of culpability, who are subject to such reviews, especially when public scrutiny becomes so magnified for those who are student-athletes. We are working to resolve these situations as quickly as possible.

According to IrishIllustrated.com, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said Sunday that he could begin to bring the suspended players back into the program this week. All five have been withheld from practice and meetings since mid-August, though they have been allowed into the team facility.

The Fighting Irish, now 5-0 and ranked No. 6 in the country, beat No. 14 Stanford 17-14 at home Saturday afternoon.

Syracuse QB Terrel Hunt suffers broken leg, Orange changes offensive play-caller

Syracuse's Terrel Hunt, left, throws a pass while under pressure from Louisville's DeAngelo Brown, top right, and Lorenzo Mauldin, bottom right, in the third quarter of an NCAA college football game in Syracuse, N.Y., Friday, Oct. 3, 2014. Louisville won 28-6. (AP Photo/Nick Lisi) The Syracuse offense took a big hit during last weekend’s 28-6 loss to Louisville.

Quarterback Terrl Hunt suffered a broken leg during the contest and offensive coordinator/associate head coach George McDonald was relieved of his play-calling duties.

Hunt was injured late in the game and will miss four to six weeks. Austin Wilson replaced Hunt and is the likely starter for this week’s game against Florida State.

McDonald has been demoted to wide receivers coach. Quarterbacks coach Tim Lester has assumed the offensive coordinator duties and will call the plays.

"I've had to make a tough decision that has been less difficult to make because of the unselfishness of our teammate and coach George McDonald," Shafer said. "Let me start by saying I've never worked with a harder working and more devoted individual than George McDonald. I truly appreciate his devotion to the team.

"I've made the decision to change roles to use our staff's talents together more effectively. Coach Tim Lester will call the plays and coordinate the offense moving forward. He, George and the offensive staff will continue to work alongside one another striving to improve our offense together. Tim will take charge of the play calling and the development of our young quarterbacks. George will continue to coach our receiver unit."

The Syracuse offense, which returned eight starters, ranks 70th nationally in total offense with 411.4 yards per game and 105th in scoring offense with 21.6 points per game. Its passing offense is ranked 86th with just 213.6 yards per game.

The Orange is in the midst of the three-game losing streak and things won’t get any easier with No. 1 Florida State coming into town this weekend.

Baylor defensive end Jamal Palmer out for season with torn ACL

Baylor will be without a starting defensive lineman for the rest of the season.

The program announced Sunday that junior defensive end Jamal Palmer has a torn ACL in his left knee and won’t return to action this season for the fifth-ranked Bears.

The injury occurred in Saturday’s 28-7 road win over Texas – a win that improved the team’s record to 5-0.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Palmer started all five games for the Bears this season, picking up 14 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks playing opposite Shawn Oakman on a defense that has allowed just 12.4 points per game (against mostly poor competition).

Though he did not start a game until this season, Palmer saw extensive action as a backup for the Bears in his first two seasons with the program. In 2013, he registered 38 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries while appearing in all 13 games. As a true freshman in 2012, Palmer saw action in eight games and made four tackles.

With Palmer out, the Bears will likely look to Javonte Magee and K.J. Smith to fill the void on the defensive line. Magee, a 6-foot-5, 280-pound sophomore, has played both tackle and end so far this season, making six tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack so far this year. Smith, a 6-foot-2, 255-pound redshirt freshman, has 11 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in four games this season.

Baylor will play its first home game in more than a month Saturday afternoon when it welcomes No. 9 TCU to McLane Stadium.

SEC fines Ole Miss and Kentucky for fans storming field

Ole Miss and Kentucky both registered huge wins Saturday afternoon over Alabama and South Carolina, respectively. When the high from those victories wore off, both programs were levied with fines from the SEC because their fans stormed the field in shows of celebration.

The conference announced Sunday that Ole Miss will be fined $50,000 while Kentucky’s fine will be $25,000. Ole Miss was fined for similar field stormings in 2012 and 2013, resulting in an increased fine. Kentucky’s last field storming incident was in 2007 – more than three years ago – so the fine was less than the one levied to Ole Miss.

“Saturday’s games were filled with excitement and celebration for a number of schools across the SEC last weekend, but significant risk of injury for student-athletes and fans alike can result from incidents such as these,” said SEC commissioner Mike Slive. “Health and safety will always be a top priority at SEC athletic events.”

The SEC’s “access to competition area policy” says that “access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times.”

The league cites safety concerns when enforcing the policy.

“For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area,” the policy reads. “It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”

Ole Miss scored two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to come from behind and knock off the Crimson Tide for the first time since 2003 to improve to 5-0 – a record the program has not attained since 1962.

In Lexington, the Wildcats stormed back from a two-touchdown deficit to beat the Gamecocks. Now 4-1, Kentucky has won as many games this year as it won in the past two seasons combined.

Something tells me Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork and Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart won’t mind paying these fines off.
