The hits keep coming for Michigan football.
Head coach Brady Hoke announced Monday that starting running back Derrick Green will miss the rest of the season due to a broken clavicle suffered during Saturday night’s 26-24 loss on the road at Rutgers.
Green, a 5-foot-11, 227-pound sophomore, is the team’s leading rusher on the season with 471 yards and three touchdowns on 82 attempts. He gained 74 yards on 12 carries against the Scarlet Knights Saturday night, but went down with the injury late in the contest.
With Green out, Michigan (2-4, 0-2 Big Ten) now lists sophomore De’Veon Smith as its starting running back heading into this weekend’s game against Penn State at home. The 5-foot-11, 223-pound Smith leads the Wolverines with four rushing touchdowns this season. Overall, he has gained 282 yards on 47 carries – a six yards per carry average.
Behind Smith on the depth chart are redshirt junior Justice Hayes (19 carries, 101 yards) and sophomore Drake Johnson (three carries, 28 yards).
Smith registered 10 carries for 31 yards and a score against Rutgers, while Hayes ran twice for five yards.
In addition to announcing Green’s injury, Hoke said that senior Devin Gardner will start for the Wolverines at quarterback against the 4-1 Nittany Lions. Gardner, a senior, was benched for the Minnesota game but returned to the starting lineup over the weekend when he threw for 178 yards and ran for 40 yards and two scores in the loss.
