USC ends first half with successful 48-yard Hail Mary pass (Video)
USC took a play out of Arizona’s book to give itself a boost over Oregon State going into halftime.
Already leading 14-10, the Trojans reached the Beavers 48-yard line when USC coach Steve Sarkisian called a timeout with just one second left in the first half. With his team clearly out of field goal range, Sarkisian dialed up a Hail Mary and quarterback Cody Kessler remarkably found 6-foot-1 sophomore wideout amid a crowd of Oregon State defenders.
The play resulted in a 48-yard touchdown and put the Trojans up 21-10 at halftime after it looked like the lead would be just four. The play is especially big since the Beavers will receive the ball to start the second half. Instead of having a chance to take a lead with a score, OSU will now look to close the deficit.
That’s the second successful Hail Mary in the Pac-12 in as many weeks. In a highlight you’ve surely seen by now, Arizona beat Cal on a last second 47-yard Hail Mary from Anu Solomon to Austin Hill last Saturday.
Is it wrong to expect another next weekend now?

WATCH: Missouri QB Maty Mauk put a hit on Steve Spurrier
Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk struggled during Saturday’s game against South Carolina, but a hit early in the fourth quarter might have made him feel a little bit better.
Following a 25-yard run, Mauk was pushed out of bounds on the South Carolina sideline and went careering into coach Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier was actually trying to get out of the way and ran right into Mauk’s path. Spurrier had his back turned and was pushed into the athletic training table. Mauk stopped himself and ran right back by Spurrier without saying a word. Spurrier, on the other hand, wasn’t pleased and no doubt had some sort of quip about it later.
Mauk did get the last laugh by leading Missouri to two touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game and securing a 21-20 come-from-behind victory.

Punches thrown in Ole Miss-Memphis fight, kicker ejected (Video)
Fights happen in college football games from time to time, but ordinarily they do not involve a kicker.
Someone forgot to tell Ole Miss’ Gary Wunderlich.
The freshman from Memphis was in the middle of things when the Rebels got into a bit of a fracas with Wunderlich’s hometown school – the Memphis Tigers – following a kickoff in the first quarter Saturday night.
As you can see in the video, Memphis’ Joe Craig was brought down on his return, but he was unsure if his knee actually touched the turf so he kept playing. With it not immediately known if Craig was ruled down, Ole Miss’ Keith Lewis slammed Craig to the turf.
Understandably, Craig was not too happy about it and it didn’t take long from players from both sides to mix things up. There were some punches thrown and the refs threw plenty of flags.
When all was said and done, it was Wunderlich (No. 97) of all people who was ejected. It didn’t really look like he did much to warrant the decision from the refs, but it will be way cooler if he tells friends and family that he was right in the thick of things.
After the dust from the fight cleared, Ole Miss won 24-3 to improve to 4-0.

WATCH: Brady Hoke allowed a concussed Shane Morris stay in and later re-enter the game
Michigan coach Brady Hoke was already under fire for his team’s terrible play this season, but his handling of a concussed player during Saturday’s loss against Minnesota has sent fans over the edge.
During the fourth quarter of the 30-14 blowout, quarterback Shane Morris, who was already hobbled, took a hit to the helmet and emerged incredibly wobbly. He was so unstable that his teammates came over to usher him off the field. Morris waved them off, played one more down and eventually came out of the game.
However, a few plays later, the helmet of new quarterback Devin Gardner came off and he was forced to leave the field. So what do Hoke and his staff do? They have Morris, who is clearly struggling, re-enter the game and take the snap. Morris hands the ball off and then exits the game again limping and struggling.
If Brady Hoke isn't fired, he should be suspended for this quote. http://t.co/lXsOQh78pO http://ift.tt/YuT8Oc
— Doug Kyed (@DougKyedNESN) September 28, 2014
Hoke said that if Shane didn't want to stay in the game, he would've said so. In a case where he is clearly injured, that's coach's call.
— Joshua Henschke (@JoshuaHenschke) September 28, 2014
Having Morris stay in after the hit was one thing, but having him re-enter the game when he was clearly injured is endangering the welfare of a player in a game that Michigan was clearly not going to win.
It was reckless and careless and concerning. Anyone could have taken that snap. It didn’t matter. It had no bearing on the result of the game. But if the ball had been fumbled and Morris had taken another hit, the result could have been catastrophic.
These players trust their coaches to make the right decisions for them and in this instance the game was more important than the welfare of a player and that’s not right.

WATCH: Ohio State strength coach Anthony Schlegel bodyslams fan who runs on field
When an unwanted visitor made his way onto the field at Ohio Stadium Saturday night during the Buckeyes’ home game with Cincinnati, an unlikely candidate – OSU assistant strength coach Anthony Schlegel – decided to handle things.
Schlegel played linebacker for the Buckeyes and when this fan made his way onto the field, the former member of the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals showed us he still has some skills.
While that may not have been a prototypical form tackle, that was still an emphatic slam that the culprit will surely feel for the next few days.
Schlegel, now in his third season on the strength staff, played for the Buckeyes in 2004 and 2005 after transferring from Air Force. In those two seasons, Schlegel recorded a total of 166 tackles while playing alongside A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter before getting drafted in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.

Florida State overcomes early deficit to knock off N.C. State in Jameis Winston's return
It took nearly 58 minutes of gametime before top-ranked Florida State could finally exhale. North Carolina State gave the Florida State all it could handle, but in the end Jimbo Fisher’s squad emerged victorious in a hard fought 56-41 shootout.
Jacoby Brissett and the Wolfpack jumped out to a 24-7 first quarter lead (including this highlight reel score), but Jameis Winston and the Seminoles made the necessary adjustments and stormed back after a sluggish start.
Winston, returning after his one-game suspension for yelling an obscene phrase at FSU’s student union, threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns while seniors Rashad Greene (11 catches, 125 yards, 1 TD) and Karlos Williams (21 carries, 126 yards, 3 TDs) made the most of their opportunities whenever they got their hands on the ball.
After the Wolfpack jumped out to a 17-point lead at the end of the first quarter, Winston led the Seminoles on a methodical 10-play, 82-yard drive that culminated in a Williams 4-yard touchdown run. A N.C. State three-and-out followed and a good return from Greene set the Noles up with great field position at the NCSU 22.
On the next play, Winston hit fifth-year senior Christian Green for his first career touchdown to decrease the deficit to 24-21.
Though the Seminoles seemed to have the momentum going into the second half, the Wolfpack did not wilt. Winston’s first pass of the third quarter was intercepted by Jerod Fernandez and six plays later Brissett (32-of-48, 359 yards, 3 TDs) found Matt Dayes for a 10-yard TD to get the lead back to 10.
The teams traded scores as the third quarter progressed, but the things changed in Florida State’s favor on a big play made by a true freshman on defense.
After a Winston touchdown pass got the Noles back within three, 38-35, freshman defensive lineman Derrick Nnadi got in Brissett’s face and forced a crucial fumble that FSU pounced on.
Winston found Greene for a 4-yard score two plays later to give FSU a 42-38 late in the third – a lead they would never relinquish. The Wolfpack tried to hang around, but FSU fed Karlos Williams and the senior scored two of his three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. With N.C. State within eight points, Williams’ final touchdown came from 12 yards out with 2:07 to go to seal the win.
This game was another example of the Seminoles not playing their best game but still coming away with a win. N.C. State was able to accumulate 520 yards of total offense, so FSU’s offense needed every last point.
In order to run the table again, Florida State needs to tighten things up because one of these days a sloppy performance like this will have a different outcome.
A home game against Wake Forest next Saturday will give Jimbo Fisher’s team a great opportunity to tighten things up.

After Minnesota beat Michigan 30-14, coach Brady Hoke should be updating his resume
Saturday’s game against Minnesota was supposed to be a feel-good game for Brady Hoke; a chance to turn down the heat on his incredibly hot seat and have a week where he didn’t have to hear the rampant speculation about his job status.
So much for that plan.
Michigan’s embattled coach watched his team stumble to a 30-14 loss to the Gophers. It marked the first time in Michigan’s 135-year history that the program had amassed three losses by the end of September. And as boos rained from the hallowed stands of the Big House, Hoke had to feel like he was an unemployed man walking.
The question now goes from whether to when as Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon will be inundated with suggestions from fans and boosters and anyone else with an opinion about college football. One thing is for certain: this team isn’t playing for Brady Hoke. It’s not fighting for its coach. And no matter what quarterback or scheme or gameplan the Michigan coaching staff puts out there, this team shows no signs of being able to comprehend it or execute it.
So what do you do?
Do you allow Hoke to finish out the season knowing that the dismal efforts Michigan has put on the field in the past few weeks will only get worse with a lame duck coach? Or do you hand the reins to someone else? And who is that someone else? It certainly can’t be offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, who is not only getting criticism in Ann Arbor, he’s still getting criticism from his former employer at Alabama. What about defensive coordinator Greg Mattison? Is he the answer?
Not sure firing Hoke in the middle of the season will do anything more than make his haters happy. It doesn’t put the program in a better position and really there’s no financial difference in firing Hoke now or at the end of the season. And there’s always the hope — the incredibly slim hope — the team will rally and make a bowl game.
Regardless of how it plays out, if Michigan makes up its mind that it’s going to move on without Hoke — whether Brandon says so publicly or not — it can still reach out to potential coaching candidates and get an early jump on its future.
But this done. The only decision left is whether to change the locks or allow Hoke to try and finish on a high note on the field.

WATCH: Arkansas punter Sam Irwin-Hill fake a punt for a 51-yard TD
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin warned his team about Arkansas’ special teams and that the Razorbacks could try a fake.
Sadly, no one listened.
With just more than a minute remaining in the first half, Arkansas punter Sam Irwin-Hill took the snap, rushed to his left and realized he had nothing but green grass between him and the end zone. With a row of blockers in front of him, Irwin-Hill ran 51 yards for the score, which gave the Razorbacks a 21-14 lead at the half.
“I knew they would crowd in there, Sam’s a good athlete and I knew we could get the edge,” coach Bret Bielema said during the halftime interview.
That play gave Arkansas much-needed momentum heading into the half as the Razorbacks shoot for the upset and their first win against an SEC opponent since Oct. 12, 2012.

NC State's Jacoby Brissett eludes multiple sacks to throw 8-yard TD (GIF)
Facing top-ranked Florida State at home, N.C. State had a ton of success on offense early in the first half. Jacoby Brissett, the Wolfpack’s 6-foot-4, 231-pound quarterback, had a lot to do with that success.
Already leading 17-7, N.C. State faced a third-and-6 from the FSU 8-yard line when Brissett used his huge frame to elude two surefire sacks and hit wideout Johnathan Alston for a remarkable 8-yard touchdown.
The touchdown pass was the second of the day for Brissett, who hit Bo Hones for a 54-yard score on the Wolfpack’s second play from scrimmage less than a minute into the ballgame.
Since Brissett’s connection with Alston, the Florida State defense has managed to stiffen while Jameis Winston and the offense closed the gap to a 24-21 deficit at halftime.
Through two quarters, Brissett has thrown for 215 yards and two TDs compared to 210 yards and two TDs for Winston.

Kentucky snaps 17-game SEC losing streak in 17-7 win over Vanderbilt
Kentucky won its first SEC Conference game since November 26, 2011 when it knocked off Vanderbilt at home Saturday afternoon. The 17-7 win marks the first conference win in the tenure of second-year head coach Mark Stoops.
Sophomore quarterback Patrick Towles accounted for both of the Wildcats’ touchdowns on the afternoon. Towles hit Ryan Timmons on a 20-yard score to cap off a 99-yard drive in the first quarter and later added a rushing touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with eight seconds left in the first half.
Towles played a pretty efficient ballgame, completing 23-of-30 passes to 11 different receivers for 201 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Featuring a bevy of ball carriers, Kentucky racked up 183 yards on the ground. Braylon Heard led the way with 62 yards on 15 carries, while Jojo Kemp added 60 yards on only eight attempts.
The Wildcats’ defense pitched a shutout, as Vandy’s only score came on a 13-yard interception return by Darrius Sims early in the second quarter. The Commodores could only muster 139 yards of total offense (85 through the air, 54 on the ground) while committing three turnovers – all on Wade Freebeck interceptions.
Kentucky showed in its three-overtime loss to Florida two weeks ago that it was a much-improved team compared to the squads that won a combined four games in the past two seasons. Now that UK, now 3-1, finally halted its SEC losing streak at 17, Stoops and company will have a big test coming next week when South Carolina comes to Lexington.
The Gamecocks are one of four ranked teams left on Kentucky’s schedule, so the Wildcats’ level of competition is going to elevate quickly in a wide open SEC East.

Cincinnati to wear 'CKP' helmet decals for Chamoda Kennedy-Palmore, RB who died Thursday (Photo)
Tragedy struck the Cincinnati program for the second consecutive season when Bearcats freshman running back Chamoda Kennedy-Palmore died in a motorcycle accident Thursday afternoon.
To honor Kennedy-Palmore, head coach Tommy Tuberville announced on Twitter that the 2-0 Bearcats would wear “CKP” helmet decals for Saturday night’s showdown at Ohio State. The decals will remain on the team’s helmets for the rest of the season as well.
We will add this decal to our helmets for the rest of the season. #RIPChamoda #Bearcats http://ift.tt/1sD2mWA

The 19-year-old Kennedy-Palmore was riding his motorcycle around 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon when he was struck by an SUV. The walk-on redshirt freshman was taken to the hospital after the accident, where he was pronounced dead.
Ohio State announced Thursday night that a moment of silence would be held for Kennedy-Palmore prior to kickoff.
It’s a tough blow for the Cincy program – a program that lost another player, offensive lineman Ben Flick, in a car accident just over a year ago.
The team wore a similar helmet decal for Flick last season.

Graham’s disappearance has been on the minds of folks in the community. Virginia students organized a candlelight vigil for Graham Thursday night and now the Cavs coaching staff has organized this thoughtful gesture.
Graham, 18, was last seen in the early morning hours of September 13 at various locations in Charlottesville, Virginia, where UVA is located.
A suspect in her disappearance, Jesse Matthew, was taken into custody this week in Texas and extradited back to Virginia. According to CNN, police believe Matthew was last person with Graham the night she disappeared. He has a bond hearing in Charlottesville Court on Thursday.
