Michael Brewer has won the Virginia Tech starting quarterback job.
The Hokies announced Saturday that Brewer, a transfer from Texas Tech, would start under center for Virginia Tech against William and Mary.
"I'm extremely honored to be labeled the starter at a program like Virginia Tech," Brewer said in a statement. "I'm very thankful for my teammates and the coaching staff for entrusting me and giving me this opportunity. I'm looking forward to this season."
Brewer, a junior, was competing with senior Mark Leal for the right to succeed Logan Thomas, who is now with the Arizona Cardinals.
“Both of the guys gave great effort and played very well in preseason, making it a very difficult choice,” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “It was a very close race and we’re proud of both of them.”
Brewer came to Virginia Tech in the offseason after graduating from Texas Tech. He had originally asked the university to transfer within the Big 12, but his request was denied. He was in line to be Texas Tech's starting quarterback in 2013 but injured his back before the season and after Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb each took turns playing well at QB for Tech, Brewer didn't get much playing time. He threw 10 passes last season.
Will Brewer be the focal point of the offense? During his career at VT, Thomas tantalized and frustrated Hokie fans, especially in his last two seasons. Last year, Virginia Tech finished 8-5 thanks to a traditionally great defense, but the offense couldn't keep up.
If Tech is to be the second-best team in the ACC after Florida State, Brewer will have to play well. While Virginia Tech's secondary is one of the best in the country, the team lost a lot of talent along the defensive front seven.
