After win over Northwestern, a Northern Illinois newspaper ad challenges Illinois (Photo)

This has to sting, Northwestern.

Less than a week after Northern Illinois beat the Wildcats, this ad supporting Northern Illinois from the school's alumni association issued a challenge to Illinois in Friday's Chicago Tribune.

It's hard to argue with a little bit of crowing from the Huskies. Northwestern and Illinois haven't exactly been powerhouses recently and NIU is the Illinois school that's most recently been to a BCS Bowl. The Huskies lost in the 2013 Orange Bowl to Florida State. Illinois last BCS appearance was the 2007 Rose Bowl and Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl in 1995 before there was even a BCS.

(And this has to sting for Big Ten fans too. After a horrible game week for the conference, two of its schools are getting trash talked by a MAC school.)

Unfortunately, NIU won't get a chance to go for in-state supremacy anytime soon unless it's matched up in a bowl game against Illinois. (Which doesn't seem likely.) The Huskies aren't currently on Illinois' nonconference schedule in the future. Maybe this ad will make a future game happen?
