When a team is punting near midfield on an easily achievable fourth down distance, you've always got to be aware of the possibility of a fake punt.
Against UMass in the first quarter, Vanderbilt was not paying attention.
On a fourth-and-five, UMass competed a fake punt pass for a 53-yard touchdown. Punter Brian McDonald faked like he was going to punt the football and found a wide-open Rodney Mills who simply outraced everyone to the end zone for the score.
As Vanderbilt went to block the punt, the failure to cover Mills looked like a miscommunication. Two players ran visible pass patterns from the inside of UMass formation. One player was picked up. Mills was not.
The TD gave UMass a 14-0 lead over Vandy, who started freshman QB Wade Freebeck. Freebeck became the fourth Vanderbilt QB to see time in the Commodores' first three games this season, though he was pulled in the first half after he was 1-2 for three yards and an interception. He was replaced by Patton Robinette, who started the season as Vanderbilt's QB.
