Penn State tight end Adam Breneman 'out indefinitely' with injury

One of the more promising young members of Penn State’s offense could be out for a considerable period of time.

Penn State announced Monday that sophomore tight end Adam Breneman will be “out indefinitely with an injury,” though the program declined to offer specifics on the injury or the severity of the injury. Breneman saw significant playing time in his true freshman season and caught a 68-yard touchdown in Penn State’s win over Wisconsin in the final week of the season.

In total, the 6-foot-4, 243-pound Breneman started five games for the Nittany Lions, making 15 catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

Blue White Illustrated is reporting that Breneman injured his left knee Monday morning and will miss “an extended period of time.” The former four-star recruit, who committed to the program amid NCAA sanctions, missed his senior year of high school due to an ACL tear in his right knee. He has his redshirt season available.

Luckily for Penn State, tight end is one of the positions on the team with the most depth. The team returns juniors Kyle Carter and Jesse James, along with redshirt freshman Brent Wilkerson and true freshman Mike Gesicki on the roster.

Carter, a 6-foot-3, 241-pound redshirt junior, was a first team All-Big Ten selection in 2012 after catching 36 passes for 453 yards and two touchdowns. He caught 18 passes for 222 yards and one score in an injury-plagued 2013 season.

The 6-foot-7, 254-pound James has 40 career catches for 609 yards and eight scores and is the team’s leading returning receiver (25 catches, 333 yards, 3 TDs in 2013).
