UAB checking into allegation of sports betting by DE Chris Rabb

UAB said it is looking into an allegation that defensive end Chris Rabb, a friend of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, placed a $5,500 bet on the Seminoles to be tied or losing at halftime of last Thursday's game against Louisville.

"We're are aware of the allegation and looking into the matter," UAB athletic director Brian Mackin said in a statement via AL.com. "That is the only comment we will have at this time."

Before FSU came back to win 42-31, the Seminoles were down 21-7 after the first two quarters. A report said that Winston had knowledge of the bet, as he and Rabb share a gambling account, and was shaving points to get his friend the win. Rabb allegedly would have won $5,000 off his bet (plus his money back) by taking Louisville +1 in the first half. Sports wagering by athletes is against NCAA rules. Point shaving is a crime.

Rabb and Winston went to the same high school in Hueytown, Ala., and were both products of the class of 2012.

TMZ first reported that UAB was looking into the allegations. Click here for a previous attempt to interview the person behind the site where the original report was posted. The site has previously made allegations about the betting habits of a former ACC player.

While Florida State struggled in the first half, it's a stretch to link his struggles to a betting connection. Tomahawk Nation has a good breakdown of Winston's first half here.

We'll see how UAB's investigation turns out.
