Eastern Michigan debuts new gray field at Rynearson Stadium (Video)

With new head coach Chris Creighton running the show at Eastern Michigan, the program is in the ground stages of establishing a new identity. Naturally, one of Creighton’s top priorities was to install gray turf at Rynearson Stadium.

The gray FieldTurf is supposed to resemble concrete because Creighton wants his team to be so tough that it will play anyone anywhere, even on concrete. A little more than six weeks after the details for the new playing surface were announced, the program gave fans their first glimpse at what the program is calling “The Factory.”

Take a look.

It’s a definitely a unique look for the Eagles as the team begins practice Monday. Of course, EMU isn’t the first program to feature a non-green playing surface. Boise State’s famous blue turf comes to mind first, but Eastern Washington has also gone with red turf, while Central Arkansas went with a purple and gray look.

Creighton has a tough challenge in turning around an EMU program that has won just four combined games in the past two seasons. It has to be encouraging, though, that the athletic department supported his idea for the gray field.

After coaching at Drake for six seasons, Creighton will make his FBS debut when the Eagles’ season kicks off at home against Morgan State on August 30.
