The Ohio State student that ran onto the field and was tackled by a Buckeyes assistant will be fined $100 for his actions.
According to The Lantern, Anthony Wunder, a 21-year-old fourth-year student studying mechanical engineering, appeared in court Thursday morning. He faced up to 30 days in jail and a $250 fine on a criminal trespassing charge, but due to his “age and lack of criminal history,” Wunder will pay a $100 fine while also spending “three to nine months in counseling.”
The incident occurred Sept. 27 when the Buckeyes hosted Cincinnati. Wunder ran onto the field during the second quarter and was promptly tackled to the ground by OSU assistant strength and conditioning coach Anthony Schlegel. Video of the incident subsequently went viral.
“He’s taken responsibility for his actions,” said Mark C. Collins, Wunder’s attorney. “He’s going to commit himself to whatever’s required of him.”
Wunder apologized to both his family and the Evans Scholars Program – the program that has provided him a full academic scholarship during his time at Ohio State.
“I made a mistake, and it was very poor judgment,” Wunder said.
The incident jeopardized Wunder’s standing with the program, but “as long as he complies with the scholars group,” he will not lose his scholarship. However, he will lose his housing privileges and won’t be allowed to “participate in Evans Scholars activities” while the disciplinary process plays out.
“That is a lot of punishment in and of itself,” Collins said. “It’s a close-knit group, and he’s very tied to that group and he’s proud of that. He’s embarrassed by any attention he’s drawn to the Evans and any misconceptions out there.”
As far as being slammed to the ground by Schlegel, Collins said Wunder will not pursue legal action against the coach.
“As far as we’re concerned, this case is over,” Collins said.
