Following DUI arrest, Miami QB Kevin Olsen no longer enrolled at school

A day after being arrested for DUI and possession of a fake or stolen driver’s license, Miami quarterback Kevin Olsen is no longer with the Hurricanes program.

The Miami athletic department announced the news in a short press release Tuesday afternoon.

“Kevin Olsen is no longer a student at the University of Miami. We wish him the very best in the future,” the statement read.

Olsen, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman, was arrested and booked after 4 a.m. Monday morning after South Miami Police were called to investigate an incident at a home. According to a police report, police encountered Olsen when he drove up to the home and asked what was going on. At that point, an officer observed that Olsen had “bloodshot watery eyes and an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath as he spoke in a slurred speech.”(AP Photo/Miami-Dade Corrections Dept. )

Olsen then failed a field sobriety test because he was unable to maintain his balance. He blew a .04 on a Breathalyzer test and was also in possession of five different IDs from four different states.

Miami head coach Al Golden expressed disappointment on Monday.

“What’s of paramount concern right now is just his well-being, helping him through this,” Golden said. “I just want to make sure that he’s getting the help that he needs and that he’s safe – his well-being is what we’re thinking about.”

Olsen, former four-star recruit, never saw the field for the Hurricanes. He was suspended for the first game of this season after he reportedly failed a drug test. Though he briefly took first-team reps during spring practice, the suspension allowed freshman Brad Kaaya and Kansas transfer Jake Heaps to pass Olsen on the depth chart.

Coming off a win over Arkansas State, the Hurricanes are 2-1 this season. Golden’s squad will travel to Lincoln for a Saturday night matchup with Nebraska this weekend.
