Oklahoma confident Dorial Green-Beckham will play this season

Oklahoma officials think transfer Dorial Green-Beckham could suit up for the Sooners this season after he’s granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA.

Green-Beckham transferred to Oklahoma after he was dismissed from Missouri following several run-ins with the law during his two seasons with the program.

According to the Oklahoman, Oklahoma is planning to use something called the “run-off” waiver, which is in place for players who were removed from their programs through no fault of their own. Oklahoma will contend that Green-Beckham was dismissed from the Missouri team for a legal issue for which he was never charged.

On April 6, Green-Beckham was the subject of a suspected burglary after a Missouri student said Green-Beckham forced open her apartment door at 2:30 a.m. while trying to see his girlfriend. Columbia, Mo., police said they could not arrest Green-Beckham because the witness feared retaliation if she came forward with her complaint.

Columbia police said Green-Beckham’s girlfriend sent the witness 16 text messages asking her not to press charges. One of the text messages claimed Green-Beckham dragged his girlfriend from the apartment by her neck, which prompted a domestic abuse investigation, but the friend said she was drunk and didn’t remember sending the messages.

In January, Green-Beckham was arrested with two other men in Springfield, Mo., after police found a pound of marijuana in their car. However, no criminal charges were filed. Green-Beckham also was charged with marijuana possession in October 2012, but he later pleaded guilty to second-degree trespassing.

Oklahoma has yet to file its appeal to the NCAA as it is waiting on one final document from Missouri. Both Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said they talked regarding Green-Beckham before Oklahoma added him to the roster. Pinkel maintained that he thought Green-Beckham deserved a fresh start.

Green-Beckham caught 87 passes for 1,278 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons at Missouri. Oklahoma currently has just one receiver on its roster with significant college experience.
