Maryland will honor the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore with special Star-Spangled Banner-themed uniforms against West Virginia on Saturday.
The helmets and sleeves of the jerseys will feature the words of the national anthem. (That's the outline of Fort McHenry on the helmets.)
On September 13, 1814, a British naval fleet attacked Fort McHenry in Baltimore. After a bombardment of over 24 hours, the Americans didn't surrender and the British retreated. After the attack ended, what's now known as the Star-Spangled Banner was raised over the fort.
Francis Scott Key witnessed the attack and composed a poem, which is now the national anthem.
From Under Armour:
The uniforms highlight the poem ”Defence of Fort McHenry,” which is sublimated onto the jersey sleeve, helmet and footwear. The logo on the helmet and pant features the outline of Fort McHenry and an image of the famous flag that flew through the night of the Battle, which inspired our national anthem. That flag was also unique in that it only had 15 stars and 15 stripes and is the only flag in American history in which the blue field is touching a red stripe. That detail is incorporated into the shoulder design of the jersey and stripe details on the pant legs and socks.
The uniforms also feature red belts like the ones the American soldiers wore during the battle. As part of the unveiling, Under Armour also announced a 10-year contract extension with Under Armour.
In the pictures released by Under Armour Wednesday morning, "Triumph" is on the back of the Maryland jerseys in lieu of player names. Per a Maryland spokesperson, the school was given a one-time exemption to have the slogan on the back. The NCAA outlaws slogans on the back of jerseys in lieu of player names for all non-service academies. (Remember the controversy surrounding Vanderbilt's jerseys in week one?)
What do you think? Overall, they're a good look. Patriotic jerseys can tend to be garish, but these aren't exceptionally so. They get a thumbs up.
