Texas WR Jaxon Shipley questionable for UCLA game

Texas announced Wednesday that WR Jaxon Shipley is questionable to play against UCLA after sustaining what the team said was a head injury against BYU.

Shipley left the game against the Cougars on Saturday. BYU won the game 41-7, and now the Longhorns get the No. 12 team in the country in week 3.

"Jaxon is being evaluated, treated and is currently going through our rigorous return to play protocols," Texas trainer Anthony Pass said in a statement.

Shipley, a senior, had five catches against BYU and has 11 in the first two games. He had 59 catches for 737 yards in 2012 and 56 catches for 589 yards last year. He's by far Texas most experienced and established receiver, and his loss is yet another subtraction for the Texas offense, which is missing QB David Ash. Ash is out indefinitely after he suffered a concussion against North Texas.

In addition to Ash and possibly Shipley, Texas won't have tackles Desmond Harrison and Kennedy Estelle back for the UCLA game either. Texas coach Charlie Strong said Monday both players broke "a core value" and there's no timeline for their return.

Strong also said there's been no decision made on Daje Johnson's status with the team. In Shipley's possible absence, Johnson, who had 24 rushing attempts last season and 24 catches, could be counted on to be a playmaker. However, it's doubtful that Johnson, and S Josh Turner, players who have both been suspended since the beginning of the season, will be available to play against UCLA.
