TCU coach Gary Patterson has had some big wins during his tenure, but Saturday’s 37-33 win against No. 4 Oklahoma has to be right near the top.
The Horned Frogs went step-for-step with the Oklahoma offense in the first half and then their defense buckled down in the second and got a pick-six for the go-ahead score.
It’s by far the biggest TCU victory as a member of the Big 12 and one that puts the undefeated Horned Frogs in the early hunt for the Big 12 title.
“I just told them to buy in and not worry about the scoreboard,” coach Gary Patterson said of his tea. “Just play to the last minute and that’s what they did today. The coaches did a great job, kids did a great job. We’re 4-0.”
And no one thought the Horned Frogs would be here, especially coming off a 4-8 campaign a year ago. But TCU has been one of the best all-around teams this season and Saturday it proved that it could play that well against the nation’s elite.
While the Horned Frogs defense will — and should — get much of the credit for this victory, quarterback Trevone Boynkin had one of the best games of his career with 318 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 75 yards. And TCU was able to overcome some of his mistakes, including an interception and a fumble.
But in the end, it was a pick-six by linebacker Paul Dawson that sealed the deal. Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight, who was polished in the first half and shaky in the second, tried throw a pass over Dawson, but Dawson snagged it out of the air at the line of scrimmage and ran it 41 yards for the score. Oklahoma blocked the extra point and ran it back to the end zone for two points, but that would cap the scoring.
With all of the fallout in the Top 25 this weekend, TCU is sure to vault up the national rankings from No. 20. TCU and Baylor are now the only remaining undefeated teams in the Big 12, and the two teams meet next week.
That game will go a long way in determining how the Big 12 fits in the national landscape and in the upcoming playoff push.
