West Virgina suspends CB Ickey Banks three games

West Virginia will be without cornerback Ickey Banks for the first three games of the season, according to coach Dana Holgorsen.

Banks had an academic eligibility issue in mid-August that forced him out of fall camp. Holgorsen said the NCAA had cleared Banks, but that the team imposed the suspension.

Banks started 12 games last season and had 32 tackles and two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. Banks was one of two defensive returners that started every game last season.

This isn’t great news for a defense that allowed 33.3 points per game and ranked 97th in the country in defensive pass efficiency especially when the Mountaineers open the season against Alabama. Banks also will miss games against Towson and Maryland. Sophomore Daryl Worley already locked down one cornerback position and Terrell Chestnut and Travis Bell were competing to replace Banks.
