Southern Arkansas wide receiver Brandon Hobdy was fatally shot early Sunday morning after being struck by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting.
According to Little Rock TV station KTHV, Hobdy and former Southern Arkansas student Wayne Payton, who also was fatally shot, were outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on campus when a car carrying people who had been removed from the building after causing a disturbance started firing shots into the crowd.
Police said both Hobdy, 23, and Payton, 24, were innocent bystanders.
The University said the event the men were attending was not affiliated with the university.
A candlelight vigil was held on campus Sunday evening.
Hobdy played in nine games for the Muleriders, all last season, and had nine catches for 108 yards. He was a transfer from Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, Calif.
"Everyone at Southern Arkansas is deeply saddened by this tragic news,” Southern Arkansas athletic director Steve Browning said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Hobdy family in particular and to all those that are affected by this tragedy."
Police have not made any arrests.
