Louisville names Will Gardner starting quarterback

In a surprise to pretty much no one, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino named Will Gardner the Cardinals’ starting quarterback.

Gardner, a redshirt sophomore, backed up Teddy Bridgewater last season and was the favorite despite the fact that Petrino said it was an open competition.

Gardner had a strong spring and an even better fall camp to earn the starting nod.

"I thought Will and outstanding fall camp," Petrino said. "He demonstrated good decision-making and executed our offense."

Gardner appeared in six games last season as a redshirt freshman. He completed 8-of-12 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He was always considered the quarterback-in-waiting for when Bridgewater moved on. Bridgewater was a first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in this year’s NFL draft.

Louisville opens the season against Miami, which just named true freshman Brad Kaaya its starter, on Sept. 1.
