Jim Harbaugh is Lloyd Carr's choice for next Michigan coach

Jan 1, 2014; Pasadena, CA, USA; Michigan Wolverines former coach and Rose Bowl hall of fame inductee Lloyd Carr at the 100th Rose Bowl. (Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports) With Brady Hoke out of the picture as of Tuesday, the Michigan coaching search is a few days under way. One man who knows a few things about coaching the Wolverines – former UM head coach Lloyd Carr – has one man in mind to lead the program into the future: current San Francisco 49ers head coach and former Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh.

“Everyone has an opinion, and I am no different,” Carr said Thursday, per the Detroit News. “If I had a choice, I would choose Jim Harbaugh. But it will be (interim athletic director) Jim Hackett’s decision, and that is as it should be.”

Harbaugh is said to have had a somewhat tumultuous tenure with the 49ers. He’s in his fourth season with the franchise following his four-year stint as Stanford’s head coach from 2007-2010.

Harbaugh has been linked to the head-coaching gig at his alma mater for some time and seems to be a fan favorite to land the position. Carr knows him well. Carr, who was the head coach from 1995-2007, served as a defensive assistant when Harbaugh was in Ann Arbor from 1983-86. The endorsement from Carr is an important one in the Michigan community.

Still, with more than a month left in the NFL season, any Harbaugh-to-Michigan scenario would be down the road. In a week where Florida and Nebraska ended their coaching searches in very quick fashion, the Michigan fan base could understandably grow a bit impatient.

Former Michigan quarterback Brian Griese, now with ESPN, said Thursday that Michigan’s decision will be “a little more deliberate” than that of Nebraska’s.

"Jim Hackett, the athletic director is going to go through a more funneled process and whittle the candidates down,” Griese said. “Because of the fact he doesn't have a whole lot of experience or any experience in intercollege athletics in conducting a search for a new coach it's not going to be a (Florida athletic director) Jeremy Foley hop on a plane and sign somebody."
