Arizona star LB Scooby Wright says Cal told him to 'look at Sacramento State' during recruiting process

Coming out of Santa Rosa, California in the class of 2013, Scooby Wright had just one scholarship offer. For Arizona, that offer has certainly paid off.

Wright, who was ranked just a two-star recruit by the major recruiting services, committed to the Wildcats. Two years later, Wright racked up 139 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and six forced fumbles and was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year as a true sophomore.

During the recruiting process, Wright attended a camp at Cal. The feedback was not positive.

“They told me to go look at Sacramento State,” Wright said, per InsideBayArea.com.

The Cal staff, then under Jeff Tedford, told Wright he wasn’t “fast enough” or “strong enough.”

Cal wasn’t the only program to make that mistake. Schools like Washington and UCLA also showed interest in Wright, but did not offer.

Wright, who said the recruiting process was “really weird and stressful,” was unsure of his future until Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez offered him a scholarship.

"It was like, 'You mean, nobody is recruiting this guy?'" Rodriguez told the Associated Press of his reaction at the time. "It was one of those deals where you watch and you're like, 'He's got size, he's a tough guy, he runs around ... let's offer him and hope no one else does. Can we keep it a secret?'"

Now, Wright uses the snubs from other Pac-12 schools as motivation.

“It fuels me every day,” Wright said.

Wright will use that fuel as he and the Wildcats square off against Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday night.
