Purdue will be without its top wide receiver for the rest of the season.
Head coach Darrell Hazell announced Monday that Danny Anthrop tore an ACL during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss to Nebraska. Hazell said the junior will miss the rest of the season and will be out of action until “the end of next spring.”
"You feel so bad for him," Hazell said per the Indianapolis Star. "The guy plays so hard and brings so much energy and passion to the field, practice field, game field every single day. That's what makes him a special guy. He's a great competitor and absolutely loves the game."
Through nine games for the Boilermakers, the 6-foot-1, 191-pound Anthrop led the team with 38 catches, 616 yards and four touchdowns. Hazell said Anthrop’s injury occurred on a punt return.
“It’s unfortunate because he was one of our big producers on the team,” Hazell said. “You talk abut your top three guys, he’s definitely one of them in terms of producing offensively.”
Purdue, now 3-6, hosts Wisconsin at home on Saturday.
Anthrop isn’t the only receiver to go down with a knee injury. Virginia announced Monday that senior Miles Gooch is also out for the year. Gooch was injured during the Oct. 25 game against North Carolina but only recently learned his injury will require surgery and end his career.
In eight games played, Gooch was third on the Cavs with 24 catches and 371 receiving yards. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Gooch also caught a touchdown in UVA’s win over Louisville on Sept. 13.
“I’m a Miles Gooch fan and I hope he gets everything he desires,” head coach Mike London said.
Coming off three straight losses, the 4-5 Cavaliers will face No. 2 Florida State on the road on Saturday before wrapping the season up against Miami and Virginia Tech.
