UTEP RB Aaron Jones dominates in win over New Mexico, team he says never showed up for recruiting visit

UTEP running back Aaron Jones had some extra motivation going into the season opener against New Mexico.

Jones told reporters that he had an in-home visit scheduled with New Mexico when he was a senior in high school, but the New Mexico coaches never showed up. This time around, revenge was sweet for Jones. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound sophomore from El Paso ran for a career-high 237 yards and three touchdowns in the Miners’ 31-24 road win.

“They called me and told me my senior year that they were going to do an in-home visit and they never showed up,'' Jones said after the win. ''They called and told me when they were coming, my mom cooked and they never showed up. So I have to take it to them.”

Jones’ 3-yard touchdown run with 2:18 to go ended up being the game-winner for the Miners, who are coming off a 2-10 season in 2013. Jones also scored on runs of 12 yards and 73 yards in the win.

As a true freshman in 2013, Jones ran for 811 yards and four scores on 5.2 yards per carry in just nine games. The 811 yards is a UTEP record for a freshman.

UTEP and Jones will look to build off the win Texas Tech makes the trip to El Paso next Saturday.
