Baylor will be without one of its top receivers for the next few games.
Fifth-year senior Levi Norwood suffered a wrist injury in the season-opener against SMU that will require surgery. The Waco Tribune’s John Werner is reporting that Norwood will be out for “at least three weeks.”
Norwood is now the fourth Baylor receiver to go down with an injury in recent weeks. Head coach Art Briles said Wednesday that No. 1 receiver Antwan Goodley (71 catches, 1,339 yards, 13 TDs) will sit out Saturday’s game against Northwestern State with a quad injury. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Corey Coleman (35 catches, 527 yards 2 TDs) is likely to sit out with a hamstring injury and Clay Fuller (32 catches, 512 yards, 3 TDs) is still recovering from a broken clavicle.
Behind Goodley, Norwood is Baylor’s second leading returning receiver from last year’s Big 12 championship team. He caught 47 passes for 733 yards and eight touchdowns last season while also being the team’s most-productive punt returner in 2013.
Luckily for Baylor, who may also be without quarterback Bryce Petty, FCS Northwestern State should not pose much of a threat on Saturday. Guys like Davion Hall (seven catches for 86 yards), Jay Lee (eight catches, 83 yards, TD) and KD Cannon (two catches, 59 yards, TD) showed against SMU that they are very capable of filling in for the team’s top receivers.
Looking at the Bears’ schedule, these guys should have plenty of time to heal. Following the Northwestern State game is a trip to Buffalo, a team that barely beat Duquesne last weekend. A bye week follows the Buffalo game before the Big 12 slate opens against Iowa State.
The Bears should be just fine.
