Nebraska junior CB Charles Jackson will take a redshirt year in 2014 after suffering a left knee injury.
Coach Bo Pelini said there were two options for Jackson; he could rehab and attempt to play in 2014, or have surgery and redshirt this season.
"After evaluating it, for his long-term best interest, they're going to go ahead and fix it, so he will be out for the year," Pelini said via Husker Online. "Fortunately for Charles, he has a redshirt year, so he'll still have two years left. It's not a horrible injury; it's a very unusual injury. But it was one when they determined whether they wanted to rehab it and have him try to come back, they determined for him long-term the best thing was to go ahead and fix it now. He'll come back, and he'll be better than ever when he comes back.
Jackson was set to be Nebraska's starting nickelback this season. Without giving a specific diagnosis, Pelini compared Jackson's knee injury to the one that former Nebraska RB Rex Burkhead suffered in 2012.
"It's very unusual," Pelini said. "If I were to equate it to something, I'd equate it kind of to what Rex went through a few years ago when he came back and played. But it's a little bit different than that. Like I said, this is one that was just really unusual when it came off."
Last season, Jackson played primarily special teams for Nebraska. He had seven tackles in 13 games. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2011 and the No. 6 cornerback in the country according to Rivals.
