Iowa's free tuition promotion is back on and open to every student

Iowa’s offer to provide free tuition to five students is back on, but now the promotion is open to everyone, not just students who buy season tickets.

The university had to modify the program after there were concerns that it did not comply with the state’s raffle laws.

The original plan offered $8,000 in free tuition to five randomly selected students who purchased football season tickets. Now the university says any student who wants to participate in the promotion may do so — without purchasing tickets — all it has to do is alert the athletic department by 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The new plan was approved by the state’s Attorney General’s office.

The university came up with the promotion in an effort to combat decreasing student ticket sales. During the past two seasons, student ticket sales have fallen from 10,000 to 7,000.

The school also plans to have special gameday events to encourage more students to come to games.
