Houston football christened its new TDECU Stadium by paying homage to the school’s best player and Heisman Trophy winner, Andre Ware.
It’s been 25 years since Ware won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback in 1989 and the team wanted to commemorate the anniversary by marking Ware’s jersey number 11 on John O’Quinn field.

The 11-yard line is located in the southeast corner of the stadium.
Ware, who was the first African-American quarterback to win the award, threw for 4,699 yards and 44 touchdowns as a junior in 1989. He also won the Davey O’Brien Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top quarterback.
