Cal poured on 45 points in the first half in its home opener against Sacramento State, but of the six touchdowns the Golden Bears registered, none was more impressive than the 19-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Kenny Lawler.
Lawler had already made an impressive touchdown catch early in the first quarter on a back-shoulder throw from quarterback Jared Goff, but his second was even better. The play started with Goff taking a shotgun snap and faking to the running back. He then immediately looked Lawler’s way and fired toward the end zone.
Lawler leaped and hauled the pass in with one hand while falling to the ground to extend the lead to 28-0.
Making a great catch like this shows that Lawler, a redshirt sophomore, is locked in in his third year on campus.
The former four-star recruit caught five passes for 38 yards and one score in the team’s opening win at Northwestern last weekend. As a redshirt freshman, Lawler made 37 catches for 347 yards and five touchdowns in 2013.
