Suspended Alabama RB Tyren Jones arrest on marijuana possession
Alabama's week just got a little bit worse.
Running back Tyren Jones, who was already serving a team suspension, was arrested Tuesday for marijuana possession, the third arrest for the Tide since Saturday morning.
Jones was suspended on Feb. 10 for what coach Nick Saban called "conduct not to the standard of the Alabama football program." He has not been working out with the program.
According to AL.com, which obtained the arrest report, police stopped Jones and smelled marijuana in his car. Jones had a small amount of marijuana in the pocket of his pants, but officers also found digital scales in the Dodge Challenger belonging to Brandon Lee Hansberry, who also was arrested.
Jones was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and was released on $1,000 bond.
On Saturday morning, safety Geno Smith was arrested for DUI and later that day, Jonathan Taylor was charged with domestic violence. Taylor was dismissed from the team on Sunday and Smith was suspended. Saban said Smith would have to earn his way back.

Urban Meyer: Ohio State could use 'specialty quarterback'
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer hasn’t ruled out using two quarterbacks in 2015.
His depth chart at the position is incredibly crowded with Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones and Meyer admitted Tuesday he could use one in the same way he used Tim Tebow at Florida in 2006 to complement the starter.
“You might have a specialty quarterback. That’s kind of what we did in 2006 (at Florida),” Meyer said per Cleveland.com. “That was kind of two different skill sets, a very unique situation, a very ego-less approach to the game. One quarterback drives them down, the other guy comes in and is the goal-line quarterback, but it worked.”
Meyer is referring to Chris Leak and Tebow, who was a freshman at the time and was mainly used as a runner. How that would translate to the 2015 Buckeyes – a team with three accomplished passers – is anybody’s guess.
Jones, who led the Buckeyes to a national title after Miller and Barrett were injured, is 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds. He could potentially fit into the Tebow mold where he is used to run over defenders and into the end zone while also presenting a passing threat.
Meyer certainly has a tough decision ahead, but he still has time with the season still five months away. Not to mention, Miller (shoulder) and Barrett (foot) are still on the mend from their respective injuries and have not been at full strength during the spring.
“I’ve thought about that a little bit,” Meyer said. “I think it’s one day at a time right now. That’s get Braxton healthy, get J.T. as many reps as he can, and Cardale, he’s only played three games.”
Once all three are healthy, that quarterback competition will be one of the top storylines in college football.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney loves his moped anonymity
Attention residents of Clemson, S.C., we have a game for you. Notice coach Dabo Swinney on his moped.
After safety Jabar Johnson wore a non-contact jersey at practice on Monday after he had an incident with a moped, Swinney was asked about his scooter opinion. Instead of pontificating about the risks of the automated transportation, he supported the method.
"They have to handle their business," Swinney said via TigerIllustrated.com. "Wear helmets and be safe whether you're in a car or a moped or a bike. Sometimes there are things you don't control. I ride a moped, wear a helmet. I cruise all over town and nobody knows who I am. I love it. It's fun."
If Swinney isn't noticed much, he must not have an "I troll South Carolina" sticker on his helmet or have his scooter painted in bright Clemson orange with tiger paw logos plastered all over it. And we're also assuming the "wear helmets" advice doesn't apply to a car. Because it'd be pretty hard to be anonymous at an intersection if you're the driver wearing a helmet.

UCLA WR Devin Lucien to transfer
UCLA's Devin Lucien will play at a different school in 2015.
The Bruins' third-leading receiver in terms of receptions in 2014 has decided to transfer according to the Los Angeles Times. He could graduate in the summer and be immediately eligible at his new school.
Per BruinSportsReport.com, Lucien said "a lot" went into his decision to make the move out of UCLA though he didn't get into specifics. In 2014, he had 29 catches for 225 yards and two touchdowns.
While losing a receiver with over 20 catches is rarely considered a positive, UCLA is well-equipped to handle his departure. While Lucien was third on the team in catches, he was sixth in yards. All five of the players ahead of him in the yardage column are returning for 2015.
Lucien's most productive season was his redshirt junior year. After redshirting in 2011, he had 29 catches combined in 2012 and 2013. According to BruinSportsReport, Arizona State is a candidate to be his transfer destination. If he moves to the Sun Devils, he could be the second high-profile player to transfer in-conference if Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock moves to Michigan. The Wolverines have been considered a strong candidate for Rudock's services as he's a graduate transfer.

Temple's Praise Martin-Oguike given extra year of eligibility
Praise Martin-Oguike will be a redshirt junior in 2015 after he was given an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA.
Martin-Oguike, a key contributor for Temple's defensive line in 2014, missed both the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In 2014, he had 37 tackles and 7.5 sacks.
He missed those two seasons because of rape allegations. In 2012, he was accused of sexual assault in his dorm room and expelled from Temple. As the case moved on, prosecutors in 2013 withdrew the charges of forcible rape, false imprisonment and other offenses because of a lack of evidence. Martin-Oguike's attorney had said the relationship with the woman was consensual.
His attorney also said that one of the reasons the charges were withdrawn was inconsistency in the woman's text messages. Martin-Oguike had allegedly texted the woman about the incident and the attorney had said she wasn't truthful about the incident in texting others.
Martin-Oguike was reinstated to Temple in January 2014.
"I can't imagine what Praise and his family were put through from the time those accusations were made," Temple coach Matt Rhule said. "Hopefully he - and the rest of our players for that matter - learn from that experience how close they are to having the privilege of playing college athletics taken away. Fortunately, in this instance, Praise has been able to restore his life and his reputation. He has done everything we've asked of him since returning to the team."

Judge: Paterno family can't suit NCAA, PSU for breach of contract
A Pennsylvania judge ruled Monday that the family of late Penn State coach Joe Paterno cannot sue the NCAA or the university for breach of contract.
Per the Associated Press, the Paterno estate has argued that the NCAA and university violated the rights of the late coach with the way the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal was handled. That includes the signing of the 2012 consent decree that questioned Paterno’s response to allegations made against Sandusky. Sandusky, the longtime PSU defensive assistant, was sentenced in June 2012 and will spend the rest of his life in prison
Judge John Leete dismissed the breach-of-contract claim in the Paterno family’s lawsuit, which had been previously amended.
“Plaintiffs are not amending their complaint to include a new cause of action or even a new theory of an existing cause of action; rather they are attempting to resurrect a claim on which this court already dismissed,” Leete wrote in his decision.
Aside from Leete dismissing the breach-of-contract portion of the lawsuit, the rest of the lawsuit will proceed. However, Leete did turn down a few other requests from the Paternos, who are suing defendants from the NCAA for commercial disparagement.
From the AP:
On Monday, Leete also turned down the Paternos' request to let them make public more of the material they are getting from the NCAA. And he rejected a request from the NCAA that would have required the Paterno estate's lawyers to conduct depositions of some people before they issue subpoenas.
A lawyer representing the NCAA said the organization will “continue to defend vigorously” what remains in the lawsuit.
The NCAA issued a statement that said Leete's decision means the organization did not breach any obligation it owned Paterno, under its rules, when it and Penn State entered into the consent decree.
Former Penn State assistants Bill Kenney and Jay Paterno, Joe’s son, are also plaintiffs in the case. They claim that the NCAA has hindered them from finding college coaching positions since not being retained on PSU’s staff after Paterno’s tenure came to an end.

Oklahoma suspends RB Keith Ford for rule violations
Oklahoma running back Keith Ford has been indefinitely suspended for academic and team rules violations, coach Bob Stoops announced Monday.
Ford rushed for 369 yards and five touchdowns in eight total games with three starts, but saw his carries decrease after suffering a broken fibula against Tennessee and the emergence of Samaje Perine.
Before being injured, Ford led the Big 12 in scoring through the first three games.
Ford’s suspension opens up a very crowded backfield for the Sooners. Perine, an All-American, is the incumbent, followed by junior Alex Ross, sophomore Daniel Brooks and freshmen Joe Mixon and Rodney Anderson, who suffered a sprained MCL and will miss the rest of spring practices.

Cincy QB Jarred Evans says racial taunts led to punch
Cincinnati backup quarterback Jarred Evans testified in court on Friday to defend the punch he threw in October that led to a misdemeanor assault charge and his suspension from the team.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Evans testified that racial taunts toward he and his girlfriend led to the punch that knocked 20-year-old Ryan Smith unconscious.
From the Enquirer:
Jarred Evans and his girlfriend, her arm wrapped in his, were walking along a Clifton street as bars were closing when they heard a series of racist remarks from a group of men, Evans testified.
"N----- lover," one of the college-age men said to the couple. Evans is black, his girlfriend is white.
The group – Evans estimated there were three or four men – drew closer, he said Friday during the fourth day of testimony in his trial in Hamilton County Municipal Court.
Evans told the court that he tried to ignore the men as he walked toward his apartment, but felt threatened as the group continued saying racist comments.
Eventually, Evans responded: "I told them, 'I will (expletive) all of you up if you come after me."
Soon after, he testified, one of the men stood in front of them, blocking their path.
"He flinched at me with his hands up," Evans testified, "and I just reacted with a punch, a jab."
The single punch sent Ryan Smith, a 20-year-old sophomore, face-down to the sidewalk, unconscious.
Evans’ girlfriend, 22-year-old Jenna Dunlap, testified that Smith blocked their path but that she “covered her face and didn’t see the punch.”
“The (next) thing I know, I saw a dude on the ground,” she said. “I had tears in my eyes. I’d never seen anything like this.”
Smith had a completely different account of the events.
Smith testified earlier this week that he didn't say anything to Evans, didn't step into his path, and wasn't with the group of men. In fact, he said he didn't see who threw the punch that knocked him out. He said he woke up in a hospital bed. He suffered a concussion and a cut to his forehead that required a dozen stitches.
Courtney Gravett, Dunlap’s roommate, backed up Smith’s claims.
Courtney Gravett, who is Dunlap's roommate, said Smith was walking about 10 to 15 feet behind the group. Gravett said she tried to stop Evans from confronting the men. For no obvious reason, she testified, Evans struck Smith, who had his head down and his hands in his pockets.
Gravett also said she had been drinking with Evans and Dunlap at a local bar that night and that the couple had an argument. Dunlap denied these claims and Evans said he did not drink that night.
The incident occurred after the Bearcats’ 41-3 over SMU in Houston. Evans threw for 10 yards and ran for 67 yards and a score in the win.

Reports: Alabama WR Cam Sims suffers torn ACL
It was a rough weekend for Alabama.
In addition to the arrests of defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor (who was dismissed) and safety Geno Smith, the program received bad news when sophomore wide receiver Cam Sims went down with an injury during Saturday’s practice. According to Al.com, Sims suffered a torn ACL.
With Alabama’s top three wide receivers from the 2014 season – Amari Cooper, DeAndrew White and Chris Jones – out of the picture, Sims was projected to be a candidate to move into a starting role alongside junior Chris Black and sophomores ArDarius Stewart and Robert Foster.
The 6-foot-4, 208-pound Sims caught seven passes for 62 yards and a touchdown in 12 games as a true freshman for the Crimson Tide last season. A native of Monroe, La., Sims was a Rivals.com four-star recruit in the 2014 class who was rated as the 174th-best player in the country.
Coming off a 12-2 season, the Crimson Tide is scheduled to get back on the field for its spring game on April 18.

Alabama DB Geno Smith arrested for DUI
Alabama senior defensive back Geno Smith was arrested early Saturday morning for driving under the influence. This is the second time Smith, a projected starter at free safety, has been arrested for DUI during his time at Alabama.
The 6-foot, 197-pound Smith was previously arrested in August 2013 and was suspended for the opening game of that season. According to Al.com, Smith remained in Tuscaloosa County Jail as of “early Saturday afternoon” and missed the Crimson Tide’s fifth practice of the spring.
Smith started six games for the Crimson Tide last season and was fifth on the team with 56 tackles. Smith provided depth at both cornerback and safety in 2013, registering 10 tackles and four pass breakups in 12 games played. He also played in 13 games as a freshman in 2012 and finished with nine tackles.
He has started eight games total in his career.
Smith was the favorite to replace Nick Perry at free safety for the Tide this season and has been practicing with the first team during the spring, per Al.com.
The program has not yet commented on Smith’s arrest or status with the program.

Kansas coach David Beaty will earn $25,000 per Big 12 win
Kansas football is making new coach David Beaty earn his salary.
Beaty, who is the lowest paid coach in the Big 12, will be paid at least $800,000, according to documents obtained by the Kansas City Star, but has the power to increase that number with each conference win.
That’s right, with every Big 12 win, Beaty will be rewarded with $25,000. With nine Big 12 games on the schedule, Beaty has an opportunity to increase his annual salary by 225,000.
However, conference wins have not been easy to come by for the Jayhawks. In the past five seasons, Kansas has just three total conference wins — one in each of the past three years.
The lack of on-field success is likely what caused Kansas to drastically scale back on Beaty’s contract. In 2009, Kansas gave Turner Gill, who was ousted after two seasons, a five-year, $10 million contract. Charlie Weis, who lasted three years, was awarded a five-year, $12.5 million package. Those two men combined for a 12-48 overall record.
Beaty’s contract also is littered with several other incentives including $100,000 for a Big 12 title and $100,000 for a bowl appearance, which is pretty low considering Kansas hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2008, and, in it's history, has earned just one North Division co-championship in 2007 (but did not play in the title game).
Beaty also is only awarded $50,000 for being named AP Coach of the Year and $50,000 for Big 12 Coach of the year. Again, that seems a little low considering the history of Kansas football, which hasn’t been a prosperous one. If Beaty were to win either of those awards, it would mean a drastic shift in Kansas football, like the days of Todd Reesing, Kerry Meier and Dezmon Briscoe Orange Bowl type of shift.
Beaty’s $800,000 salary is comprised of a $225,000 base salary and a $575,000 professional services contract. If the Jayhawks win six games, have no more than six losses and gain bowl eligibility, that professional services contract will increase to $675,000 through the end of the current deal. It is worth noting that Kansas has not had a winning season since 2008.
While these terms might seem a little harsh in today's overly generous college football coaching market, they definitely provide Beaty, a first-year head coach, incentive to get the Jayhawks moving in the right direction. And there’s no doubt that if he does turn the program around, he’ll be able to renegotiate this deal and make a much better wage.

Man convicted in murder of Missouri Southern assistant
Jeffrey Bruner was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday in the death of Missouri Southern State assistant coach Derek Moore.
Bruner shot and killed Moore in November 2013 when Moore (right) was leaving a Joplin, Mo., movie theater with Bruner's estranged wife.
The defense had argued that his wife's infidelities drove the defendant to a point where he snapped during a confrontation with her and the 37-year-old assistant football coach at Missouri Southern State University outside the movie theater where they had gone on a date.
A psychologist testified that he believes Bruner suffered an abnormal reaction to a life-threatening situation known as acute stress disorder that caused him not to be able to recall much of what happened when he confronted Moore and his wife. Bruner told the court that he remembers the gun in his hand and two shots being fired. He testified that he did not recall anything else until the point where he reached his vehicle after the shooting.
Bruner faces life without parole because of the murder conviction, the automatic sentence for anyone convicted of first-degree murder in Missouri. His sentencing is scheduled for May for a count of armed criminal action. According to the Globe, the jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching the guilty verdict.
He fired seven rounds in the incident and according to the pathologist who performed the autopsy, six struck Moore. One shot went through his spinal cord. A witness also described hearing Bruner say "If I can't have you, no one can" before he committed the crime.
Moore was Missouri Southern's offensive line coach. The team canceled Homecoming activities after his death and postponed a game. He was in his first year as a coach for the team.
Bruner and his wife were officially divorced in the summer of 2014.

Petition to move Big Ten title game out of Indiana surfaces after 'religious freedom' bill signed
Sean Burke, a Wisconsin fan, has started a petition on change.org to have the Big Ten Championship football game taken out of the state of Indiana.
The petition was sparked because of a “religious freedom” bill Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed into law Thursday.
Senate Bill 101 essentially would allow businesses to turn away gay and lesbian patrons on the basis of religious beliefs.
Burke’s petition, which had 3,900 signatures at the time of this posting, claims the state of Indiana is not living up to the ideals of the Big Ten Conference.
On March 26, 2015 Governor Pence of Indiana signed into law a bill that would allow businesses to discriminate against members of the LGBT community under the guise of "religious freedom". A law such as this runs contrary to the ideals of the Big Ten Conference and puts students, fans and staff at risk of open discrimination based solely on who they love. Such law sends the message that members of the LBGT community are second class citizens contrary to the many contributions members of the LGBT community have made in areas such as science, the arts, architecture, business and not to mention sports.
The State of Indiana, as a member of the Big Ten Conference, needs to be told that it must live up to the ideals of the conference and respect all persons regardless of sex, age, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
The Big Ten title game is scheduled to be played at Lucas Oil Stadium through 2021.
NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement Thursday that his organization would examine "how it might affect future events as well as our workforce."
"The NCAA national office and our members are deeply committed to providing an inclusive environment for all our events," Emmert's statement said. "We are especially concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees.
"We will work diligently to assure student-athletes competing in, and visitors attending, next week's men's Final Four in Indianapolis are not impacted negatively by this bill.
"Moving forward, we intend to closely examine the implications of this bill and how it might affect future events as well as our workforce."
