Former South Carolina LB Kaiwan Lewis will transfer to Rutgers

Nov 30, 2013; Columbia, SC, USA; Clemson Tigers quarterback Tajh Boyd (10) is sacked by South Carolina Gamecocks linebacker Kaiwan Lewis (8) in the second quarter at Williams-Brice Stadium. (Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports) Kaiwan Lewis is headed to the Big Ten.

A few weeks after expressing his intent to transfer from South Carolina, Lewis announced Monday that he’ll play at Rutgers for his final season of eligibility.

Lewis, a linebacker from Hammonton, N.J., decided to return to his home state and play for the Scarlet Knights after taking an official visit over the weekend.

He also considered Nebraska.

“It was the right fit after going over everything from the weekend and things like that,” the 6-foot-1, 230-pound Lewis told NJ.com. “It just felt like it was the best decision for me where I could excel and become a better player and with the opportunities outside of football things.”

Lewis played in 31 career games for the Gamecocks and made 11 starts. After starting 10 games and registering 54 tackles as a sophomore in 2013, Lewis started just once last season and finished the season with 20 tackles and a sack in eight games.

He also appeared in 11 games on special teams as a true freshman in 2011 and made three tackles.

Lewis said he will compete for a starting spot at middle linebacker with the Scarlet Knights.

“I’ll be playing Mike linebacker,” he said. “I’m going to go in there and do my best to get the starting spot.”
