Report: Sims named starter for Bama opener

Eastern Illinois QB Jalen Whitlow's pooch punt went three yards (Video)
Facing a fourth-and-six from near midfield on the road early in the second half at Minnesota, Eastern Illinois head coach Kim Dameron sent out his offense, but opted for an attempted pooch punt by quarterback Jalen Whitlow.
The plan was for the Panthers to pin the Gophers deep in their own territory, but things did not go as planned.
Instead, Whitlow’s punt went three yards. For real. Three whole yards.
Whitlow transferred to Eastern Illinois this offseason after two seasons at Kentucky and his first game with the Panthers was a rough one. Minnesota won in a rout, 42-20, and Whitlow threw for 110 yards and one interception while splitting snaps with senior Andrew Manley. Whitlow also gained 77 yards on the ground on 19 carries.
Whitlow started 15 games in his two seasons at Kentucky, including seven as a true freshman in 2012. With the Wildcats, Whitlow threw for 1,834 yards and eight touchdowns while also running for 663 yards and nine scores on the ground.
Whitlow and the Panthers, an FCS squad from the Ohio Valley Conference that went 12-2 in 2013, will play its next game against Southern Illinois next Saturday.

Vanderbilt prints email to prove to referee that special jerseys are legal (Video)
Not deleting emails saved Vanderbilt from four timeouts on Thursday night against Temple.
The Commodores wore special jerseys with the words "Anchor Down" (the team slogan) on the back instead of the players names. The letters of the names were in black on the black jerseys and it was a slogan, which is prohibited by NCAA rules. Before the 2014 season, the NCAA instituted a rule that the numbers on players' jerseys must be a contrasting color from the jersey and just recently, South Florida's efforts to put "The Team" on the back of its jerseys was rebuffed.
The numbers on Vanderbilt's jerseys were gold. They were good to go. The contrasting color rule specifically mentions the numbers on a jersey and not the lettering.
There was some apparent confusion among referee Ken Williamson and his officiating crew and Vanderbilt was penalized a timeout in the first half for the slogan on the back. The penalty for not having contrasting numbers and/or a slogan is a loss of a timeout per quarter unless the team changes out of its uniforms.
(Last year, Arkansas State was penalized twice for having non-contrasting numbers on its jerseys against Auburn. The penalty was upped to timeouts in 2014.)
However, Vanderbilt knew the jerseys had been approved. (The letter re-enforcing the no-slogan rule was sent out August 6.) During the game, school officials got an email it had gotten when submitting the uniforms that said they were approved. After showing Williamson the email, Vanderbilt was awarded its timeout back.
Take note, all other college football programs, you can have lettering on the back of your jerseys that blends in. But you should keep any documentation proving their legality just in case.

Ole Miss pulls away from Boise State late to win 35-13
Don't let the final score of Ole Miss' 35-13 win over Boise State fool you. It was not a convincing win, at least for the first three quarters.
Hell, those first three quarters – the first half, especially – were the perfect example of why college football should have a preseason. Mind you, we're not advocating for a preseason in college football. But anyone who is in favor of it and doesn't use the first two quarters of Thursday night's game isn't making the best argument possible.
In the first 30 minutes, Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace and Boise State QB Grant Hedrick combined for six interceptions. The teams combined for 13 penalties, including seven Ole Miss false start penalties. It was brutal.
Through three quarters, Ole Miss led 7-6. But finally in the fourth, the Rebels looked like the team that could be a sleeper in the SEC West as Wallace threw three fourth-quarter touchdowns in the span of three drives and three passes to pull away.
The third TD was a simple short pass to Cody Core that Boise's defenders just utterly whiffed on.
Can Ole Miss be that sleeper team? Well, based off Texas A&M's performance against South Carolina, finishing fourth in the SEC West is tougher than it looked 24 hours ago. But let's take A&M's game out of the equation and still pose the question. It's a yes, but it's certainly not unequivocal.
Entering Thursday, the prevailing thought was that the Rebels would go as far as Bo Wallace carried them in 2014. And that thought was proved true. As Wallace was throwing interceptions, Ole Miss looked like a team hardly capable of beating a Boise State team clearly not playing its best. When Wallace was throwing touchdowns, well, it was easy to bring A&M back into the picture and look ahead to October 11 when the two teams meet.
As for Boise State? Well, the Broncos were spoiled with Kellen Moore. Hedrick finished with four interceptions and simply didn't look comfortable all night, though it didn't help that he could smell Robert Nkemdiche's pregame meal wafting from his breath for most of the first half. The five-star recruit was constantly in what was supposed to be the pocket for Hedrick.
All isn't lost for Boise State, however. Winning the Mountain West may be enough for a New Year's bowl bid in one of the College Football Playoff bowls. But to do that, Hedrick will have to play much better.
