Steve Spurrier quotes Taylor Swift, says he'll return to South Carolina in 2015

Though South Carolina has struggled to a 4-5 record so far this season, 69-year-old Steve Spurrier plans to return to coach the Gamecocks for his 11th season with the program in 2015.

“The plan is to definitely be back here and so forth,” Spurrier told The State on Tuesday. “Just say that’s the plan.”

Spurrier faced a bit of heat for not answering questions from the media following Saturday night’s overtime loss to Tennessee. The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 2-5 in the SEC after being ranked No. 9 nationally in the preseason rankings.

“It hasn’t been as much fun as the last four years, that’s for sure,” he said.

The Gamecocks have lost four straight conference games (to Missouri, Kentucky, Auburn and Tennessee) all by seven points or less. Spurrier admitted he did not see these struggles coming.

“Gosh almighty, I didn’t see all this coming. I don’t think anybody did,” Spurrier said. “We have to regroup and keep fighting, try to get these guys positive and see if we can get a ball to bounce our way maybe late in a game or so forth.”

The Gamecocks have a bye this week before a road contest at Florida on Nov. 15. Spurrier, while hilariously quoting Taylor Swift, hopes his team will use the bye week to reset its footing and finish strong.

“I was telling our coaching staff, I think Taylor Swift’s got a song called ‘Shake it Off.’ Ugh. That’s what we’re trying to do, shake it off and get ready for the Florida Gators next week,” Spurrier said. “That’s what we’re going to try to do, see if we can regroup and try to win a close game. You know we’ve had our share of close ones, though we’ve struggled on defense and so forth.”

Never change, coach. Never change.
