Former UNLV RB David Peeples dead at 29
Former UNLV running back David Peeples died Wednesday according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was 29.
Peeples, a Las Vegas native, died at Mountain View Hospital with the cause of death “yet to be determined.”
Peeples, the Gatorade Nevada Player of the Year in 2003, enrolled at UNLV in 2004 after a decorated career at Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas. He rushed for 3,334 yards and 30 scores in his high school career, but his time at UNLV was marred with injury.
UNLV Sports Information Director Mark Wallington and Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, a Las Vegas native, paid tribute to Peeples on Twitter.

Overall, in parts of four seasons, Peeples rushed for 566 yards and eight touchdowns as a Rebel.

The Dos and Don’ts Of Spring Break
Michigan DBs Jabrill Peppers and Blake Countess show off gymnastics skills (Videos)
The folks in Ann Arbor seem to be really jacked up about the beginning of spring practice.
First, new Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said the first day of spring drills is “like coming out of the mother’s womb” and that he would attack it “with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”
Practice began on Tuesday and Wolverines defensive backs Jabrill Peppers and Blake Countess showed that they head-over-heels excited to be back on the field.
TURNT‼️💯 http://ift.tt/1MYTEcP
— Breez (@JabrillPeppers) February 25, 2015
That’s Peppers, a redshirt freshman, showing off his gymnastics skills during what looks to be a special teams drill. Peppers, who recently moved from cornerback to safety, missed the majority of the 2014 season with various injuries. The former five-star recruit is expected to make an impact for the Wolverines in the fall.
Two days after Peppers’ impressive backflip, fifth-year senior Blake Countess took the gymnast skills to another level.
Yall decide! 😈😂 its all fun tho! @JabrillPeppers http://ift.tt/1FFfGeT
— Blake Countess (@TheeCount2) February 27, 2015
Unlike Peppers, Countess, an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection in 2014, actually has a gymnastics background from his youth, so that seems like a bit of an unfair comparison. Still, it shows off the kind of athletic ability the Wolverines will have on display in their secondary in 2015.
Following the conclusion of Friday’s practice, the Wolverines have a week off before picking things up again on March 10. From then on out it’s three practices per week until the team’s spring game on Saturday, April 4.

Two starting Oregon State linemen, two others medically retire
Four Oregon State players, including two offensive linemen with starting experience, have decided to retire.
The program announced Friday that the retirement of offensive linemen Garrett Weinreich and Grant Bays, defensive end Glyeb Ewing and safety Zack Robinson are all related to medical issues.
The 6-foot-6, 312-pound Weinreich earned the starting role for the Beavers at left guard entering the 2014 season. He started the opener against Portland State but re-aggravated a knee injury he originally suffered in his true freshman season in 2012. From that point on he struggled to return to the field and saw action in only two games for the season. That same injury caused him to miss the entire 2012 season and limited him to just four games on special teams as a redshirt freshman in 2013.
Like Weinreich, the 6-foot-3, 288-pound Bays was entering his redshirt junior season for the Beavers. He started a combined 10 games over the past two seasons at right guard, but according to The Oregonian, Bays dealt with a “nagging back issue” for much of his career.
After redshirting as a true freshman in 2012, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Robinson appeared in 19 games over the past two seasons for the Beavers, mainly on special teams. However, both seasons were cut short due to injury. In 2013, it was a knee injury that kept Robinson out of two games. In 2014, Robinson missed the team’s final three games with an unspecified injury. Overall, Robinson registered eight tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in his career.
Ewing, a three-star recruit from Waukon, Iowa, took a redshirt in 2014.
The Beavers start their first spring practice under new coach Gary Andersen on Tuesday, March 3.

Oregon OL Andre Yruretagoyena decides to retire
Another Oregon lineman has decided not to return for a fifth season.
A month after defensive tackle Sam Kamp made the decision due to health concerns, Oregon announced Thursday that offensive lineman Andre Yruretagoyena, a potential starter in 2015, will retire from football for personal reasons.
“We wish him all the best,” said Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich.
Yruretagoyena was a redshirt junior in 2014 and started the first two games of the season for the Ducks before going down with a leg injury. That injury kept him sidelined for much of the season, but he was able to play but not start in the team’s final four games, including the Pac-12 title game, the Rose Bowl, and the College Football Playoff title game.
Overall in his Oregon career, Yruretagoyena played in 17 games. According to a release from Oregon, Yruretagoyena said he now plans to “focus on getting my body healthy and graduating.”
“I have the utmost respect for all my coaches and teammates, and can’t thank them enough for the support and opportunity to represent the University of Oregon,” Yruretagoyena said.
“I’d also like to thank the fans of the team for their support and taking their time to come to games; they’re a very big part of this program and their support will always be a huge motivator for the team. I wish the team nothing but a successful year and can’t wait to watch.”
In addition to Yruretagoyena, Oregon also needs to replace departed seniors Hroniss Grasu, Jake Fisher and Hamani Stevens along the offensive line. Fortunately for the Ducks, senior left tackle Tyler Johnstone is set to return after missing all of last year with an injury.
Additionally, Cameron Hunt, Tyrell Crosby, Matt Pierson, Jake Pisarcik and Doug Brenner – all of whom started at least one game last season – are set to return.
Oregon starts spring practice on March 31.

Surveillance images from Howard's Rock vandalism released (Photo)
The man who vandalized Howard's Rock at Clemson's Memorial Stadium may not have realized he'd be caught on camera. Or if he did, he was pretty brazen.
The school released surveillance images from the vandalism, which show a man hitting the glass case surrounding the rock with what appears to be a rod. The incident shattered the glass around the case, though Clemson said the rock itself appeared to be unharmed. Construction crews working on the stadium found the rock's case vandalized on Wednesday morning.

The suspect has not been found yet. From WLTX:
The suspect was wearing a navy blue jacket, blue jeans, work boots, and gloves with reflective material on the knuckles and back of the hand. The pickup he was in is similar to a Ford Ranger. Anyone with information should call Clemson police at 864-656-2222 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
The rock has been removed from Memorial Stadium until a new case is found.

Honduran soccer field to be named after former Georgia coach Vince Dooley
A soccer field in Honduras will bear the name of famous Georgia football coach Vince Dooley.
Dooley, 82, has spent time in Honduras helping youth find alternatives to drugs and gang violence. He’s also helped plan the landscape of the field, which will include 160 hedges on the border similar to the border at Sanford Stadium where the Georgia Bulldogs play football.
The field will be located at an elementary and middle school in the Agalta Valley and the scoreboard, which was donated by Coca-Cola, will have Dooley’s name. FIFA donated the goals.
Dooley, who won 201 games and the 1980 national championship at Georgia, will be in Honduras on March 19 for the dedication along with Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez.

SEC sanctions LSU's recruiting early enrolees
NHL Game at Penn State's Beaver Stadium has been discussed
With an NHL game being played at Michigan Stadium last year and another scheduled for Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium on New Year’s Day 2016, another Big Ten football venue – Penn State’s Beaver Stadium – seems like another logical location for a future Winter Classic game.
The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins have one of the fiercest rivalries in the NHL, so bringing that matchup to State College, which is right in the middle of the state, would make for an awesome atmosphere at 107,282-capacity Beaver Stadium. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman thinks so too, and he told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the league has discussed it.
“There’s been talk about it,” Bettman said. “I’m intrigued by the possibility. But it’s not anywhere close to fruition.”
While that’s at least somewhat promising for Pennsylvania hockey fans, it also got us thinking about what other college football venues could host hockey games.
Notre Dame Stadium – South Bend, Indiana
Built in 1930, Notre Dame Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in all of college football. The stadium currently holds 80,795 and a $400 million renovation project is on the way. Once those renovations are complete in South Bend, a Blues-Blackhawks game would be a great way to show it off.
Ohio Stadium – Columbus, Ohio
Michigan did it, so you know the Buckeyes want to show that they can put on a better show at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. The Horseshow holds 104,944, so you’d probably need to bring in the Detroit Red Wings to play the Columbus Blue Jackets to fill the joint. It would be awesome.
Rose Bowl – Pasadena, California
California may not be the most outdoor hockey-friendly environment, but if a Ducks-Kings game could be played at Dodger Stadium last year, a game could totally be played at the iconic Rose Bowl. The San Jose Sharks-Los Angeles Kings rivalry has intensified with playoff meetings in three of the past four seasons. A game at the 92-542-seat Rose Bowl would be a ton of fun.
Michie Stadium – West Point, New York
This would be a bit more of an intimate environment than the others with a capacity of just 38,000, but an outdoor game at the United States Military Academy would make for a great aesthetic. There are plenty of NHL teams that could be involved, including the Buffalo Sabres, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils.
Others: Neyland Stadium (Tennessee), Milan Puskar Stadium (West Virginia), High Point Solutions Stadium (Rutgers)

LSU can't sign early enrollees to financial aid agreements for 2 years
LSU won't be able to sign any recruits who wish to enroll early to financial aid agreements for the next two years.
The Advocate found the penalties handed down from the SEC via a public records request. The penalties stem from a player who signed a financial aid agreement with LSU to enroll early in January. When a player does so, the school he signs an FAA with is allowed unlimited contact – but only if he early enrolls with that school. The player didn't, and therefore LSU violated the unlimited contact provision.
As part of the sanctions, LSU will also lose 21 (10 percent) of its 2015 recruiting evaluation days.
The name of the recruit is unknown and the Advocate said LSU declined comment. The report does list one player who signed a FAA early but didn't sign a LOI with LSU.
Matt Womack, an offensive tackle from Mississippi, signed a financial aid agreement with LSU in August intending to enroll at the school in January. Instead, Womack de-committed — as hundreds of prospects do each year — and signed a National Letter of Intent with Alabama in February.
Financial aid agreements, instituted by the NCAA in the fall of 2013, allow high school seniors who plan to enroll early to sign with that school starting Aug. 1 of their senior years.
A financial aid agreement doesn’t bind the player to that particular school like a National Letter of Intent does, but it affords coaches of that school unlimited contact with the signee — contact that would normally be considered against NCAA rules.
However, Womack's father said in the fall to the Clarion-Ledger that LSU wasn't using the financial aid agreement to contact his son on an unlimited basis.
Players can sign multiple financial aid agreements. Therefore, by initiating unlimited contact with a not-rock-solid recruit who has signed a financial aid agreement with the intention to enroll early, programs run the risk of the violation LSU committed.
LSU's 2015 recruiting class was ranked No. 8 in the country by Rivals.

Ineligible Baylor RB Silas Nacita admits to breaking rules, apologizes
Ineligible Baylor RB Silas Nacita tweeted an apology Thursday morning for breaking NCAA guidelines.
Baylor announced Wednesday that the formerly homeless walk-on running back was ineligible because of rules violations. While Nacita said Wednesday that he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA, the NCAA said it never heard his case or made a ruling about it, meaning Baylor never took the case to the governing body.
Thursday, Nacita apologized for breaking NCAA rules, misleading in his previous tweets, and said he should have accepted NCAA-approved guidance offered to him by Baylor.
The bottom line is that I broke the rules. I should've never accepted the help and I am deeply sorry for my actions http://ift.tt/1MUGv4c
— Silas Nacita (@Salsa_Nacho) February 26, 2015
Players are allowed to accept housing assistance from close family friends, but as he said in his apology, his utilization of the people around him didn't fit the guidelines.
As we wrote Wednesday, the multiple layers of the story meant we likely didn't know the whole sequence of events that led to Nacita's ineligibility. While his apology helps clear the waters, it's still safe to say there's likely more here than meets the eye.
And this should be a lesson to all NCAA athletes to check with compliance before doing anything that could be considerend a violation of NCAA rules, no matter the circumstances.

Pete Carroll to receive honorary degree from USC
Though his tenure as USC head coach ended five years ago under rather unceremonious circumstances five years ago, the school announced Wednesday that Pete Carroll will receive an honorary degree on May 15 during the school’s commencement ceremony.
Former USC and current @Seahawks head coach @PeteCarroll will receive an honorary @USC degree at the 2015 commencement ceremony. #FightOn
— USC Trojans (@USC_Athletics) February 25, 2015
Carroll, now the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, will also be inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame on the following day, May 16. He led the Trojans to a 97-19 record, two AP National Championships in 2003 and 2004 and a BCS National Championship in 2005, which was later vacated.
Carroll left for the Seahawks after the 2009 season while the program was investigated for improper benefits given to Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush while Carroll ran the program. As a result of those findings, the NCAA vacated the program’s BCS title, two wins from the 2004 season and all of its wins in 2005. The program also was hit with reduced scholarships and a two-year bowl ban.
After leaving USC, Carroll led the Seahawks to three division championships won the 2013 Super Bowl.
“Carroll returned USC football to national prominence during his nine- year tenure as head coach at the university,” said the university in a release. “His ‘Always Compete’ philosophy has led to a successful four-decade career in football. Carroll is one of just a few coaches in football history to have won a Super Bowl and a national college championship.”
The university also lauded Carroll for his charitable efforts both in Los Angeles and Seattle.
“He is also the founder of A Better LA and A Better Seattle, two gang- violence prevention and community-building organizations that empower inner- city youth and forge relationships with service organizations,” the statement said.
In addition to Carroll, Attorney General Kamala Harris, health-care policy expert Leonard Schaeffer, conductor-composer Michael Tilson Thomas, Nobel Prize- winning chemist Ada Yonath, and Ariel Investments president Mellody Hobson will also receive honorary degrees.

Case containing Howard's Rock at Clemson vandalized
The case for Howard's Rock at Clemson's Memorial Stadium was vandalized early Wednesday.
According to the school, the rock appears to be unharmed but the glass from the case it sits in was broken. The rock was taken out of the stadium on Wednesday.
Howard's Rock removed from Death Valley, Photo via @steelerwill and @ClemsonInsider http://t.co/R4vVpjBwM2 http://ift.tt/1FXQmEs
— Aaron Ransdell (@RansdellatTheSt) February 25, 2015
Clemson released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying it was looking into the incident. The school said the vandalism was reported by construction workers working on stadium renovations early Wednesday morning and that police are currently investigating.
“Howard's Rock is a very important and visible part of our campus and our stadium, and we know many students, alumni and fans come to see it throughout the year,” Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said. “We’ll work to quickly have it back in its home and available for all to see as quickly as possible.”
It's not the first time the rock has been vandalized. An 18-year-old was arrested in June 2013 after a vandalism incident on June 2, 2013. After that vandalism incident, which saw a piece broken off the rock, Howard's Rock got a new case. And now, it'll have to have an even newer case to replace the replacement that was just vandalized.
Clemson players rub the rock, named for former Clemson coach Frank Howard, before every home game for good luck.

Baylor RB Silas Nacita says NCAA ruled him ineligible, but the story has holes
Baylor walk-on running back Silas Nacita has been dismissed from the Baylor football team after he claimed the NCAA ruled he took an impermissible benefit.
His benefit?
Taking permanent lodging from a friend instead of sleeping on various apartment floors.
Nacita, who detailed his ordeal with the NCAA on Twitter, claimed he was homeless when he enrolled at Baylor and was staying on the floors of various friends. He said a longtime family friend took him in, gave him a place to live, and that the NCAA deemed that impermissible benefit and ruled him ineligible.
All I wanted to do was go to school and play the game I loved. http://ift.tt/1AKI5PQ
— Silas Nacita (@Salsa_Nacho) February 25, 2015
It’s easy to point the finger at the NCAA and even at Baylor in this instance, but that might not be the right thing to do.
The NCAA said in a tweet that it did not declare Nacita ineligible as previously stated.
The NCAA did not declare Silas Nacita ineligible and Baylor has not requested a waiver for him.
— NCAA (@NCAA) February 25, 2015
According to David Smoak, who works for an ESPN station in Central Texas that profiled Nacita during the 2014 season, Nacita was given options to relieve his homelessness and stay within NCAA rules and might not have taken advantage of them.
There are methods in place to help student-athletes in the position like @Salsa_Nacho, he chose to ignore them, NCAA or Baylor not at fault.
— David Smoak (@DavidSmoak) February 25, 2015
Smoak also noted that Nacita was told of potential housing options prior to accepting housing from a friend.
Calls and emails to Chad Jackson, Baylor’s associate AD for compliance, were not immediately returned. However, Baylor’s Campus Living and Learning said it was not aware of subsidized housing for homeless students or students whose scholarships did not cover housing. The call was directed to financial aid.
Baylor athletics director Ian McCaw released a statement regarding Nacita’s eligibility and appeared to be shutting the door on a possible return.
“Silas Nacita will not be a part of the football program moving forward due to rules violations that impact his eligibility. We appreciate his contributions to Baylor football and wish him well as he completes his studies.”
Baylor said it will have no further comment on Nacita.
Nacita’s incredible journey from a homeless high school football player and wrestler in Bakersfield, Calif., to a scholar-athlete at Cornell to homelessness vagabond, community college and ultimately Baylor was documented in a Sports Illustrated piece last December. It detailed Nacita’s broken relationship with his mother and his decision to forgo a scholarship at Cornell after a year to come to Baylor. It also chronicles his journey from Cornell to Bakersfield, which included hitchhiking and sleeping in ditches, as well as his attempts to enroll in Baylor before finally earning enough scholarship money to pay for school and walk onto the team.
There are, however, holes in the Sports Illustrated story, including a part that says Nacita had earned scholarship money from a community college and a federal loan to get enough funds to rent an apartment and buy a moped prior to joining Baylor for summer workouts in 2014.
This is the same time period that Nacita tells the Sports Illustrated writer that he was homeless and sleeping on the floors of friends.
Also, Baylor did not set up the interview with Sports Illustrated, Nacita sought it out.
It's worth noting that for Nacita to be declared ineligible by the university he would have had to have taken the apartment from a Baylor booster or someone with ties to the university not just a plain old family friend.
Fact is Baylor dismissing Nacita and the NCAA debunking Nacita’s tweet raise major questions about the validity of this story in the first place. It’s unfortunate that we can’t take what appears to be good, heartfelt and inspiring stories at face value anymore; Manti Te’o’s fictitious girlfriend saw to that.
And while it would be easy to blame the evil and heartless NCAA for forcing a poor walk-on to choose between homelessness and his dream of playing Baylor football, well, that’s not quite the case either.
Are there still good stories of people overcoming odds and pursuing their dreams? Sure. Is the story of Silas Nacita one of them? Maybe.
But right now, it’s too difficult to discern between fact and fiction.

BYU AD: School intends to play in Power 5 conference in 'near future'
BYU is still sending signals that it would like to be a member of a Power Five conference sooner rather than later.
Athletic director Tom Holmoe said Tuesday that he thinks there's a round of realignment in college football to come. And he hopes the Cougars are involved in it.
"We’re an independent team playing an independent schedule,” Holmoe said. “That’s what we’ve got and that’s where we are. We’re not really looking back, we’re looking forward because there are possibilities, and I have to do my due diligence on that.”
Meanwhile, Holmoe also said he foresees another shift in conference alignment coming, and "it’s our intention that we would be playing in what they commonly call a 'Power 5' conference sometime in the near future."
The Cougars have a television deal with ESPN for home games. As Power Five conferences have added mandatory out of conference games against fellow Power Five opponents, BYU has fought to be considered like Notre Dame. The Irish are independent too, but they're treated like a P5 school. BYU is considered a Power Five opponent by the ACC but not the SEC.
In June, coach Bronco Mendenhall expressed his desire for BYU to join the Big 12. With 10 teams, the Big 12 seems the most likely candidate for the Cougars. However, members of the conference said shortly after Mendenhall's comments that it wasn't looking to expand.
While BYU would likely have to give up its ESPN deal if it joins a Power Five conference, the conference revenue would more than make up for the loss of the ESPN revenue.
Holmoe also said that the school was handling discipline internally for the brawl at the end of the Miami Beach Bowl. BYU and Memphis players fought at the end of the double overtime game and Memphis has previously announced suspensions for players involved in the fight.
"There is a lot going on behind the scenes and we'd like to keep it that way," Holmoe said.

DL Javonte Magee not on Baylor's spring football roster
Javonte Magee is currently not a member of Baylor's football team.
The defensive lineman, who had nine tackles and a sack last year while playing in all 13 of Baylor's games, isn't on the Bears roster right now, according to coach Art Briles.
“He’s not here this spring,” Briles said via the San Antonio Express News. “There’s a possibility that he’ll come back this summer. But this spring, he’s not with us.”
Magee is back in San Antonio right now. Briles was coy when he was asked what Magee needed to accomplish to rejoin the team.
“That’s kind of between us and him and the university,” Briles said. “So we just hope that it works out for his benefit.”
According to teammate Jamal Palmer, Magee has a lot on his mind.
A former four-star recruit out of high school, Magee has left and returned to the football team previously. He was not part of Baylor's 2013 team after leaving in the summer and returned before the 2014 season.
