Iowa plans to play both Jake Rudock and C.J. Beathard at quarterback

Iowa has a bye this week, but it won’t be using its extra time to narrow down whom will be its No. 1 quarterback moving forward this season.

Offensive coordinator Greg Davis said Tuesday that once junior Jake Rudock returns to action after recovering from a hip injury, the Hawkeyes will split playing time between Rudock and sophomore C.J. Beathard.

“Jake is about 80%, so we'd start C.J. if we played today. We don't play today. We play in ten days or 11 days, whatever it is. We feel like we have two good quarterbacks, and we'll look at it in these next 11 days and then we'll go from there,” Davis said. “What you can expect is that we'll probably play two with no set series, numbers or whatever. We feel like we have two guys that have earned the right to play and have played pretty well. So that's the way we'll approach it.”

Rudock started the first four games for the 4-1 Hawkeyes, but went down wit a hip pointer against Pitt. Beathard came on in relief and completed 7-of-8 passes for 98 yards in a comeback 24-20 win. With Rudock still injured, Beathard started over the weekend at Purdue and struggled, completing just 46 percent of his passes in a 24-10 win.

Before his injury, Rudock threw for 798 yards and five touchdowns while completing 66.9 percent of his passes. Despite Rudock’s solid play, Davis and the coaching staff believe Beathard has shown enough to earn playing time.

“I thought (Beathard) handled the Pitt game extremely well,” Davis said. “He made a third down conversion in that ballgame that was pretty special. They brought a blitz and did a nice job with the hot receiver and he reset his feet and found the second receiver. It was a big time play. We like the two quarterbacks. We're going to play both of them right now.”

Davis said there won’t be any special packages or formations designated to a particular or even a percentage of snaps devoted either way. The coaches will simply go by feel and ride the hot hand.

“We want to see who is playing better on that particular day,“ Davis said. “I’m not talking about any kind of sequence or numbers. Part of it will be a feel. Part of it will be we definitely want to play two guys.”

The coaching staff is confident that both quarterbacks will be comfortable with the arrangement moving forward, even though Beathard attempted only three passes prior to Rudock’s injury.

“I think they'll totally be fine. They're good guys and they're good players. I think they both know the other guy’s pretty good. They're not blind to the fact that the other guy does some pretty good stuff also,” Davis said.

Seven regular season games remain on the schedule, giving the two ample time to try to outperform the other. In the end, Davis thinks that’s exactly what will happen – one quarterback will separate himself from his competition.

“The truth is, as a staff, we think we have to (play two QBs) and we're going to play two, and at some point it will shake itself up.”

Last year's uniforms had pink helmets and socks while the numbers and trim were Oregon's colors. This year, the helmet is black and the numbers and name on the backs will be in pink. There will also be pink shoe options as well.

While the pink helmets were a cool look, overall, these uniforms look better than last year's did because of the matching numbers and trim. With the gray trim and matte black helmet, these are sharp without looking garish.

Congressman asks Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany to investigate Shane Morris incident

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr., a Congressman from New Jersey, reached out to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany Tuesday, urging him to launch an investigation into Michigan’s handling of quarterback Shane Morris on Saturday against Minnesota.

Pascrell is the co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force and wrote in his letter to Delany that “allowing a possibly concussed player to determine whether or not he is fit to return to play not only violates common sense, but is also an egregious violation of standard concussion protocol.”

The play in question occurred in the fourth quarter of the Wolverines’ home loss to Minnesota. Morris, a sophomore quarterback, was hit hard in the helmet and was visibly dazed as he stood up. Despite needing to lean on teammates in order to maintain his balance, Morris looked to the sideline and waved off coaches and trainers and stayed in the game for an additional play. Later on, he returned to the game for another play after his backup, Devin Gardner, was forced to come out for a play when his helmet came off.

Pascrell’s letter then cites head coach Brady Hoke’s comments about the situation from Monday.

“During a press conference on Monday afternoon, Michigan coach Brady Hoke initially stated that he “[didn’t] know if [Morris] has a concussion or not.” Hoke also stated that "Shane's a pretty competitive, tough kid. And Shane wanted to be the quarterback, and so, believe me, if he didn't want to be, he would've come to the sideline or stayed down." Allowing a possibly concussed player to determine whether or not he is fit to return to play not only violates common sense, but is also an egregious violation of standard concussion protocol, including protocol set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Big Ten Conference.”

Pascrell then asks for Delany to investigate the matter and “reexamine the protocols in place and what changes can be made to improve them” while also establishing “penalties for violations of concussion protocols.”

Since Hoke addressed the media Monday afternoon, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon released a statement early Tuesday morning saying that Morris did, in fact, suffer a concussion and apologized for miscommunications which allowed Morris to continue playing.

The entire letter from Pascrell to Delany can be viewed here.

Texas WR John Harris continues the Longhorn trash talk against Baylor

Texas players do not want let Baylor's ascension to the top of the Big 12 go quietly.

Earlier this year, Texas LB Steve Edmond expressed his disdain for the Bears, long the Longhorns' little brother in the state of Texas. Heck, it's more than little sibling. For a while, Baylor was the third of the three other Texas schools in the Big 12.

In the past four seasons, Baylor has finished ahead of Texas in the conference standings three times. The teams meet on Saturday and while Baylor is undefeated and Texas is 2-2, Texas WR John Harris is confident about his team.

“I mean, they’re still Baylor,” Harris said via the Dallas Morning News. “I mean, just because they started playing better in this era, that’s good for them. We are who we are — we’re still Texas. … Baylor has never changed. They are who they are.”

Baylor QB Bryce Petty did not want to get into a war of words.

“Just so we’re clear, not answering any questions about their tweets or whatever,” Petty said.

Baylor coach Art Briles was confused when asked about Harris' remarks.

“Nothing. What am I supposed to say?" Briles asked. "We’re still Baylor, TCU is still TCU, Oklahoma is still Oklahoma. I don’t know what that means.”

While Harris isn't incorrect in his remarks the teams haven't changed, either in name or by very recent history, the history of each team has no bearing (no pun intended) on the outcome of the 2014 game. Baylor is Baylor, in the sense that the Bears have one of the best offenses in the country. In the three seasons Baylor has finished ahead of Texas, it's also beaten the Longhorns. There's no continued dominance by the team in Austin despite the standings.

Baylor is also a two-touchdown (or more) favorite.

"That's something," Texas head coach Charlie Strong said Monday. "They deserve every bit of it. If you watch that team, it's just amazing to see how that team developed over the last three or four years. This season with the quarterback, and the threats they have at the wide receiver position … and you look outside with [WR KD Cannon]. On defense, [LB Bryce Hager] does a great job in the middle of just directing the defense. They have good, strong leadership out of him. They play so well. They play as a team. [Briles] has built that team and built it together. That's probably why were' sitting where we are, and that's why they are where they are right now. They're the number one offense in the country."

Texas is Texas in the sense that, well, the Longhorns do not have the number one offense in the country. While Texas scored 23 points against Kansas, the Longhorns had 24 points combined in the previous two games.

"I think the offense is coming together great," Texas DE Cedric Reed said. "I don't think, I know they are coming along great. Tyrone, he's been leading them really good. Just his progression coming up. It hasn't been one of the greatest, but he's still young. As a defense, we're going to try to pitch a shutout, but if we hold them to under 30 or less points, that will be great."

While we appreciate Reed's optimism, the Texas offense will need a best case scenario to stay competitive, especially if Baylor nudges towards the top of his 30-point threshold, the top mark of a pretty wide range of points. It's pretty improbable that Baylor will score less than 30. The Bears failed to score 30 once last year and in the past three-plus seasons, a span of 43 games, it's happened five times. To win, Texas will likely need to make it six in 44.

N.C. State coach Dave Doeren apologizes to FSU coach Jimbo Fisher

After accusing Florida State players of faking injuries over the weekend, N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren apologized to FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher Tuesday morning.

In a statement released on the N.C. State football Twitter account, Doeren said:

“I have apologized to Jimbo Fisher and want to apologize to his staff, players and FSU fans for my comments that took away from a tremendous football game. I left an emotional locker room and took those emotions with me to the press conference. It was a great college football game with tremendous plays made by both teams. That is where the focus deserves to be. I have the utmost respect for Jimbo, his staff and players. FSU played a great game and earned the win.”

Doeren’s statement sings a much different tune than the sentiment he shared Saturday and in his weekly press conference on Monday.

Following the Wolfpack’s 56-41 loss to FSU at home Saturday, Doeren said the team’s up-tempo offense was extremely effective until “all the crazy fall-down things were going on and the clock kept stopping.” Doeren’s team jumped out to a 24-7 first quarter lead before the top-ranked Seminoles stormed back.

“You know the refs can’t do anything about that, but it’s horrible the way the tempo gets slowed down by these injuries,” Doeren said. “We went fast in the first quarter, I guess there were no fake injuries.”

Though he softened his stance a bit by saying that other teams besides Florida State are doing the same thing, Doeren maintained Monday that it is “unsportsmanlike” to fake injuries.

“I think it's unsportsmanlike, personally,” Doeren said. “I just wish there was a rule that if a guy left he has to stay off for more than one play if he leaves with an injury. One of the players they stopped the game for Saturday, the guy walked off the field as slow as humanly possible, and he’s back in the game. I get it, if they are hurt, they’re hurt. I’m not going to say a guy isn’t hurt, but if they come back in the game then he might not have been hurt.”

Reporters in Tallahassee asked Fisher about Doeren’s comments Monday and it was clear he wasn’t too pleased with what he heard.

“I accuse him of not knowing what he’s talking about. They’re not fake injuries. No one faked injuries, and we wouldn’t do that. We’ll coach Florida State, and he can coach North Carolina State,” Fisher said.

The Wolfpack had a handful of chances to pull off the biggest upset of the season Saturday, so Doeren’s frustration after the game was certainly understandable, though it is a bit puzzling that he felt the need to issue an apology after what he said Monday. It appears he did not want the focus to be on his comments instead of a hard-fought game.

The Wolfpack, now 4-1, will take on Clemson on the road Saturday while the 4-0 Seminoles will host Wake Forest.

Ed Orgeron is interested in the Kansas job

Ed Orgeron is interested in a chance to turn the Kansas football program around.

The former USC interim coach and Ole Miss coach has been out of coaching since he wasn't hired as the Trojans' full-time coach for the 2014 season. He wants to get back in, and expressed his interest at a Little Rock, Ark., Touchdown Club meeting where he spoke at.

From USA Today:

Kansas? You bet he's interested.

"It's a Power Five (job)," he told USA TODAY Sports. "(Mark) Mangino went 12-1 and went to the Orange Bowl. It's in a great conference. His staff proved that you can do it."

And if the program is mired at the bottom of the Big 12? So what?

"It's a challenging job," he said. "But most jobs you get, there's gonna be some things you're gonna have to fix."

Orgeron had things to fix at USC when he became the interim coach in 2013. He took over after Lane Kiffin was fired following a September loss to Arizona State. Orgeron relaxed the atmosphere at USC and the Trojans went 6-2 while he was the coach. He didn't coach the bowl game after the team hired Steve Sarkisian as coach.

He's been spending the time off in Lousiana with his family. He compared not getting the USC job to a death in the family.

"Really, not getting the job for me was like a divorce or a death in the family," Orgeron said. "It was something you've kind of just got to get over, you know? I am now, in a positive way — but it just took a little while."

He was the coach at Ole Miss from 2005-2007. He took over after Ole Miss went 4-7 in 2004 under David Cutcliffe and was 10-25 in his three seasons there. The job at Kansas, where Charlie Weis went 5-22 in over two seasons, is a tougher turnaround than Ole Miss is, but Orgeron has been open about how much he's learned since his time with the Rebels. (The Jayhawks are 10-41 since Mangino's departure.)

"I believe I put my résumé out on the TV those last eight games," he said of his time at USC. "They know who I am and what I've done."

While Orgeron may not be an up-and-coming coach that Kansas could be looking for, the Jayhawks could do far worse. Someone with the recruiting ability of Orgeron would be a big plus at Kansas, and if last year is any indication, he's good at changing the culture of a program that's become morose. Kansas needs that.

Michigan AD Dave Brandon issues statement apologizing for handling of Shane Morris situation

In a statement sent out just before 1 a.m. ET Tuesday morning, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon apologized for the way the school handled QB Shane Morris' injury situation, saying "there was a serious lack of communication that led to confusion on the sideline."

Brandon's statement contradicts what coach Brady Hoke said Monday afternoon. The embattled coach defended the way Morris was treated said he didn't make decisions as to who stays in or comes out of a game because of injuries. Hoke also said that he didn't see the hit, that Morris was not diagnosed with a concussion that he knew of and that he hadn't talked to Brandon since the 30-7 loss to Minnesota on Saturday.

According to Brandon, Morris has a "probable, mild concussion" Hoke did not know of the diagnosis when he spoke to the media Monday, yet anther example of a lack of communication in a situation full of them.

The first line of Brandon's statement pinned the "ultimate responsibility" on Hoke and himself.

"Ultimate responsibility for the health and safety of our student-athletes resides with each team's coach and with me, as the Director of Athletics. We are committed to continuously improving our procedures to better protect the health and welfare of our student-athletes.

"I have had numerous meetings since Sunday morning to thoroughly review the situation that occurred at Saturday's football game regarding student-athlete Shane Morris. I have met with those who were directly involved and who were responsible for managing Shane's care and determining his medical fitness for participation.

"In my judgment, there was a serious lack of communication that led to confusion on the sideline. Unfortunately, this confusion created a circumstance that was not in the best interest of one of our student-athletes. I sincerely apologize for the mistakes that were made. We have to learn from this situation, and moving forward, we will make important changes so we can fully live up to our shared goal of putting student-athlete safety first.

A few plays after Morris was tackled awkwardly and got up limping, he got hit in the chin and was very wobbly when he got up. He motioned to stay in the game and remained for a play before he was taken out. He then played another play when backup QB Devin Gardner was forced to miss a play after his helmet came off.

Sunday night, Hoke issued a statement saying the school was confident proper medical decisions were made for Morris.

Brandon said Tuesday morning that, somehow, no one on Michigan's medical and coaching staffs did not see the hit Morris took. Brandon also said that the school's "systems we had in place were inadequate to handle this unique and complex situation properly." Apparently a university with an athletic budget near $140 million has a hard time diagnosing concussions in a sport where head injuries are far too common.

"I, along with Darryl and our administrative and medical teams, have spent much of the last two days carefully reviewing the situation regarding Shane Morris. We now understand that, despite having the right people on the sidelines assessing our student-athletes' well being, the systems we had in place were inadequate to handle this unique and complex situation properly.

"With his permission, I can share that Shane Morris suffered an ankle injury during the third quarter of Saturday's game. He was evaluated for that injury by an orthopedic surgeon and an athletic trainer several times during the game. With each of these evaluations it was determined that his ankle injury did not prevent him from playing.

"In the fourth quarter, Shane took a significant hit and stumbled after getting up. From the field level and without the benefit of replays, medical and coaching staffs did not see the hit. Because they did not see the hit, the athletic training staff believed Shane stumbled because of his ankle injury. The team neurologist, watching from further down the field, also did not see the hit. However, the neurologist, with expertise in detecting signs of concussion, saw Shane stumble and determined he needed to head down the sideline to evaluate Shane.

"Shane came off the field after the following play and was reassessed by the head athletic trainer for the ankle injury. Since the athletic trainer had not seen the hit to the chin and was not aware that a neurological evaluation was necessary, he cleared Shane for one additional play.

"The neurologist and other team physicians were not aware that Shane was being asked to return to the field, and Shane left the bench when he heard his name called and went back into the game. Under these circumstances, a player should not be allowed to re-enter the game before being cleared by the team physician. This clearly identifies the need for improvements in our sideline and communication processes.

"Following the game, a comprehensive concussion evaluation was completed and Shane has been evaluated twice since the game. As of Sunday, Shane was diagnosed with a probable, mild concussion, and a high ankle sprain. That probable concussion diagnosis was not at all clear on the field on Saturday or in the examination that was conducted post-game. Unfortunately, there was inadequate communication between our physicians and medical staff and Coach Hoke was not provided the updated diagnosis before making a public statement on Monday. This is another mistake that cannot occur again.

Brandon is correct; this is another mistake that can't occur again. But it's a mistake that shouldn't have occurred in the first place and Morris was put in serious danger because of a miscommunication at best and incompetence at worst.

To prevent another mishandling of another injury, Michigan will now have a member of its medical staff in the press box with access to video replay and is "also examining how to reinforce our sideline communication processes and how decisions will be made."

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh wants Brady Hoke to keep his job at Michigan

Sep 6, 2014; South Bend, IN, USA; Michigan Wolverines coach Brady Hoke stands next to quarterback Devin Gardner (98) before the game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium. (Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports) Michigan coach Brady Hoke hasn’t officially been fired yet, but that hasn’t stopped rumors from swirling about his replacement.

According to an NFL Network report on Sunday, the Wolverines are interested in pursuing Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, not his brother, San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who has been linked with the Michigan job before.

However, the Baltimore Sun cited a source close to Harbaugh saying that Harbaugh would have no interest in the job because of his relationship with Hoke.

While Michigan may be interested in him, John Harbaugh isn't expected to pursue a job currently held by his friend, Hoke, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The source said there are multiple reasons why John Harbaugh wouldn't be inclined to go after the job beyond his friendship and loyalty to Hoke. A big reason is that Harbaugh is content as coach of the Ravens (3-1), with whom he won Super Bowl XLVII just two seasons ago over Jim Harbaugh's 49ers.

Harbaugh more or less echoed that sentiment during his press conference Monday when he didn’t deny interest in the job, but said he’s rather see his friend Hoke keep it.

John Harbaugh on Michigan rumors: "I'm interested in Brady Hoke being the head coach at Michigan for a long time to come."

— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) September 29, 2014

Harbaugh was signed to a four-year contract extension at the end of last season that averages $6.5 million per year and has him under contract until 2017.

While John Harbaugh might be content with his NFL team, Jim Harbaugh is looking for an easy exit. Jim Harbaugh has come under fire in San Francisco and likely won’t be long for his job unless the 49ers make significant improvements from here on out.

Even though the 49ers defeated Philadelphia on Sunday, they are still 2-2 and have a lot of issues both offensively and defensively. This is a team that was supposed to challenge for the NFC’s spot in the Super Bowl and with each week it’s looking less and less likely that will happen.

Also, Jim Harbaugh is a Michigan man something the Wolverines like in their coaches. He played quarterback for the Wolverines and was courted for the head coaching job when Michigan decided to go with Hoke. His father, Jack Harbaugh, was an assistant under legendary former coach Bo Schembechler.

Hoke is 28-16 in his four seasons with Michigan, including a 2-3 record so far this season.

Strong to Goodell: Colleges can do better job

College football programs need to do a better job of molding players into responsible adults, Texas coach Charlie Strong said Monday, a day after he visited with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. From ESPN.com - College Football - Strong to Goodell: Colleges can do better job

Case of the Mondays: SMU on pace to set records no team wants to claim

Every Monday, Dr. Saturday editor Graham Watson looks back on the weekend that was and decides what she loved, what she hated (I have all the hot takes) and what she can’t wait to see again.

THE LOVE

There’s the UCLA offense: The UCLA offense that we expected to see at the beginning of the season finally showed up against Arizona State last week in a 62-27 victory. Apparently, all it took for quarterback Brett Hundley to snap out of his funk was a little hyperextended elbow. Hundley had 427 total yards and five touchdowns in the contest and put himself back into the Heisman conversation. UCLA is one of three teams that remain undefeated in the Pac-12 after seven teams entered the weekend with an unblemished record. The Bruins are still the favorite to win the Pac-12 South and the next two games against Utah and Oregon might determine whether it should be the conference’s representative in the playoff.

Don’t knock Akron’s chrome dome: Akron took a lot of Internet hate for its gold chrome helmets this weekend, but apparently those shiny domes were enough of a distraction to get a 21-10 win against Pittsburgh. This was the first time the Zips had defeated a Power Five conference team in six years and they held James Conner, the nation’s No. 1 rusher coming in, to just 92 yards on 25 carries. This is an Akron team that’s definitely seeing a resurgence under coach Terry Bowden. It won five games a year ago — after winning six the previous four years combined — and is 2-2 already this season. If the Zips can play with some consistency this season, there is a strong possibility the Zips could not only earn enough wins for its first bowl eligibility since 2005, but also could challenge for the MAC East.

FINAL: Akron 21, Pitt 10. Great road win for Terry Bowden's squad. The chromes definitely gave the Zips a boost. http://ift.tt/Yvic7M

Ohio State’s revival: Did we all write Ohio State off too quickly? After the Buckeyes upset loss to Virginia Tech, Ohio State's year started to become a lost season. But after two impressive performances against Kent State and Cincinnati, reports of Ohio State’s demise might have been premature. The Big Ten has proven to have a couple top contenders in Michigan State and Nebraska, and the rest is a mixed bag. Saturday’s game against Maryland should be interesting because the Terps rank fifth in the conference in scoring and might be the best overall team the Buckeyes have faced this season. That game also might be the only competition Ohio State faces until it meets Michigan State in November.

THE HATE (hot takes a-plenty)

Florida State’s defense: Florida State isn’t the worst 4-0 team defensively — that honor belongs to Arizona — but it’s not far behind. The Seminoles are allowing 403.3 yards per game and 25.3 points per game so far this season. Florida State allowed 41 points to a North Carolina State team that hadn’t scored more than 40 points against a Power Five opponent since its 62-48 loss to Clemson on Nov. 17, 2012. Make no mistake, Florida State is not going to be inundated with teams that light up the scoreboard. But if its defense can’t make tackles or the offense can’t quit turning the ball over, the Seminoles are going to be in a lot of trouble against some of the better teams remaining on the schedule. Is Florida State really the No. 1 team in the country? Even though it’s still winning, it doesn’t look nearly as good as Oklahoma, Alabama or Oregon.

SMU’s road to winless: SMU is currently on pace to break the record for most points allowed per game in a single season. That record is 50.3 and was set by Louisiana-Lafayette in 1997. SMU, through four games, is currently allowing 50.5 points per game and things don’t appear to be getting any better. SMU has scored one touchdown this season and it came in garbage time against North Texas. It’s currently being outscored 202-12 and every game it’s inching closer to East Carolina’s 2010 record of 572 points allowed.

Brady Hoke: There isn’t much more to say here that hasn’t already been said several times in the past few days. Hoke held his weekly press conference Monday and was inundated with questions about quarterback Shane Morris, why he wasn’t pulled off the field and whether athletic director Dave Brandon had talked to him about his job status or about Morris. Hoke was combative and sullen and looked like a guy who knew the end was near. After the loss to Minnesota, I advocated for Hoke to be fired at the end of the season. However, if this is going to be a situation where he or his staff are endangering players for wins then the ties need to be severed immediately.

If Michigan's defense was as defensive as Brady Hoke is in his press conference, the Wolverines would have beaten Minnesota.

— Mike Hlas (@Hlas) September 29, 2014

LET’S DO IT AGAIN

Cal and lots of offense: It used to be the Big 12 was the place to go for ridiculously high scoring games, but Cal has become a nice Pac-12 alternative to get a scoring fix. Cal’s past two games against Arizona and Colorado have been like porn to people who love lots of scoring (didn’t realize that was a pun until just now). In those two games, Cal has scored 104 points. So far this season, the Bears rank fifth in the country in scoring with 47.5 points per game, just a point fewer than Oregon. All that scoring has netted the Bears a 3-1 start, its best start since the 2011 season. Remember this is a Cal team that has won just four games in the past two seasons. Looks like teams are going to really have to bring their offenses if they want to keep up with the Bears, who are also allowing 35.75 points per game.

Is Air Force a player again? It’s been a couple years since Air Force won the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy — the award given to the winner of the round robin between the service academies — but Saturday’s 28-14 win against Boise State has Air Force fans thinking big. The Falcons visit Navy for the first leg of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy this weekend and this year’s game should be as closer than many expected when the season began (especially after Air Force’s loss to Wyoming). With the exception of last year’s 28-10 Navy victory, every game between these two teams since 2008 has been decided by a touchdown or fewer. Navy has won nine of the past 11 Commander-in-Chief’s trophies, so it would be nice to see the race for this hardware become competitive again.

Clemson’s Deshaun Watson: Only the Clemson coaches can say why freshman Deshaun Watson wasn’t the starter at the beginning of the season, but it’s clear that he deserves to be the starter now. Watson threw for 435 yards and a school-record six touchdowns in a 50-35 win against North Carolina. While the Florida State loss was a setback, Clemson isn’t out of the race for the ACC Atlantic Division just yet, especially with the way Florida State has played in the past two games. Watson did put up his stellar numbers against a pretty bad North Carolina defense, but any confidence is good confidence for a freshman.

LSU coach Les Miles says true freshman Brandon Harris will start at Auburn

A true freshman will start at quarterback for LSU when it faces Auburn on the road Saturday night.

Head coach Les Miles announced Monday that Brandon Harris will make his first career start against the fifth-ranked Tigers ahead of sophomore Anthony Jennings. Harris and Jennings had been splitting time under center for No. 15 LSU throughout the season, but Miles decided that it is time to give the nod for Saturday night’s primetime game at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

A true freshman hasn’t started for LSU at quarterback since Jordan Jefferson did so in 2008, but Miles conceded that “it wasn’t a difficult decision” to go with Harris over Jennings going forward.

Harris, in LSU’s win over New Mexico State over the weekend, completed 11-of-14 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns while also scoring twice on the ground. Harris came on in relief of Jennings, who committed three turnovers – two interceptions and one fumble – in his worst outing of the season.

Harris has been far more efficient in LSU’s offense this season, completing 22-of-30 passes (73.3 percent) for 394 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. By comparison, Jennings has completed 42-of-83 passes (50.6 percent) for 734 yards for five touchdowns and three interceptions. On the ground, Harris has 108 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 16 attempts compared to 76 yards rushing and no scores on 38 attempts for Jennings.

Going up against Auburn on the road is a tough task for any quarterback, let alone a true freshman. Harris faces a big challenge Saturday night, but he has proven to be the better option for the Tigers at quarterback moving forward and it could be argued that this was a decision Miles should have made a few weeks ago.

Ole Miss safety Cody Prewitt provides bulletin board material for Alabama

Sep 6, 2014; Nashville, TN, USA; Mississippi Rebels defensive back Cody Prewitt (25) prior to the game against the Vanderbilt Commodores at LP Field. (Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports) There’s something about Alabama week that seems to cause Ole Miss players to say something to antagonize the Tide.

This year, that bulletin board material came from safety Cody Prewitt following last week’s 24-3 win against Memphis.

"We understand that we haven't played a team that's going to be as good as Bama,” Prewitt said, according to Fox Sports’ Brandon Speck. “But we don't really think Bama is as good as they have been. And we're better than we have been. We're looking forward to getting to the game plan and really nailing down all the tweaks and stuff that we're going to have to put into Bama."

OK, it’s not that insidious, but it is blowing up the Internet the way things tend to do whenever there’s a perceived slight toward the Tide. But it’s also the kind of confidence you’d expect from an undefeated Ole Miss team.

In fact, it was quarterback Bo Wallace who got a little too amped about the Rebels’ 3-0 record heading into last season's Alabama game and provided some choice bulletin board material for that contest.

"Yeah, I think we can put points on them," Wallace said last year, according to AL.com’s Michael Casagrande . "I think we can put points on anybody. We just have to show up and play. It's the same thing every week, let's stay on schedule, control the tempo and don't have any turnovers."

Again, not a disrespectful quote, but one the fired up Alabama enough that it went on to shutout the Rebels 25-0 in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The defense also sacked Wallace for a safety late in the game as an exclamation point to their effort.

“After hearing all the trash they were talking in the media, it just really played a big role for us to come out and dominate these guys,” junior defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan said following the game.

The moral of the story here is that it’s better not to poke the bear. We’re not sure that’s what Prewitt was doing when he made his comment, but it’s going to be perceived that way, and depending which Ole Miss team decides to show up on Saturday, the Rebels could get flattened.

Even though Ole Miss is 4-0, it’s had some major struggles to get there. It had abysmal first halves against Boise State and Memphis, and Wallace has had a lot of trouble holding onto the ball.

But it will have to be on its game against the Tide because, unlike Prewitt said, this is actually a better Alabama team than we’ve seen in the past, at least offensively. Under new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, the Tide is averaging 42 points and 594.25 yards per game. Both of those numbers are better than any Alabama put up during the years it won the national title.

But Ole Miss has the best secondary the Tide has faced this season. It already has nine interceptions, which leads the SEC. On the flipside, Ole Miss has not faced a receiver as good as Amari Cooper, who is second in the country in receiving yards with 655 yards and five touchdowns.

A place where Prewitt is correct is on defense. The Tide is allowing 14 points per game, but has faced only one really dynamic offense (West Virginia). Ole Miss currently ranks 23rd nationally in total offense with 496.3 yards per game and 39 points per game. So if Wallace and his cast of stellar receivers can get on the same page, this is a place the Rebels could exploit.

And Ole Miss is going to need every bit of its offensive firepower, especially if the Alabama offense decides to use Prewitt’s words for motivation like the defense used Wallace’s a year ago.

Virginia Tech RB Shai McKenzie out for season

Virginia Tech will be without one of its top rushing threats for the rest of the season.

The program announced Sunday that true freshman running back Shai McKenzie suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s win over Western Michigan.

Per a release from the program, doctors will “let the swelling in the knee subside” before McKenzie undergoes surgery in October. The injury will also keep him out of spring practice before the 2015 season.

McKenzie, a native of Washington, Pa., injured the same knee last September during his senior year of high school.

Through five games, the 5-foot-11, 221-pound McKenzie was second on the team with 269 rushing yards on 53 carries for the 3-2 Hokies. The former four-star recruit also led the team with three rushing touchdowns.

With McKenzie out, fellow true freshman Marshawn Williams, also a four-star recruit, will see an increased role instead of splitting the bulk of the carries with McKenzie. On 65 carries, Williams has 290 yards to lead the team. Additionally, junior J.C. Coleman and freshman Joel Caleb could be in line for more carries. Sophomore Trey Edmunds, who ran for 675 yards last season, should also work his way back into the mix.

Coming off a 35-17 home win over Western Michigan over the weekend, the Hokies will take on North Carolina on the road Saturday afternoon.

When Cal beat Colorado 59-56 in double overtime Saturday afternoon, it marked the first Pac-12 win for the Golden Bears since October 13, 2012 – a span of 16 consecutive conference games. The win improved Sonny Dykes’ squad to 3-1 and was a great way for the team to bounce back from last Saturday’s heartbreaking loss on a Hail Mary on the road to Arizona.

Predictably, the post-game locker room was a joyous scene:

When addressing his team, Dykes said that he could feel Ted Agu on the sidelines with them throughout the game. Agu, a former defensive end for the team, passed away in February after a conditioning drill.

The Bears will look to build off the win as it moves forward in Pac-12 play. Next on the schedule is a road contest with Washington State on Saturday night.

Hoke: My choice to keep QB Morris in game

The Michigan Wolverines clarified its athletic-injury policy Sunday following questions about the health of sophomore quarterback Shane Morris. From ESPN.com - College Football - Hoke: My choice to keep QB Morris in game

Michigan coach Brady Hoke said the training staff was responsible for QB Shane Morris staying in the game

ANN ARBOR, MI - SEPTEMBER 27: Quarterback Shane Morris #7 of the Michigan Wolverines is helped off the field by Ben Braden #71 during the fourth quarter of the game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Michigan Stadium on September 27, 2014 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Golden Gophers defeated the Wolverines 30-14. (Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images) Michigan coach Brady Hoke said he was not responsible for the decision to leave quarterback Shane Morris in the game against Minnesota on Saturday despite Morris struggling with injuries.

Hoke issued a statement late Sunday evening saying that Morris suffered a leg injury during the game and the training staff deemed him OK to play.

“The safety of our student-athletes is always our top priority,” Hoke said in a statement. “We generally never discuss the specifics of a student-athlete's medical care, but Shane Morris was removed from yesterday's game against Minnesota after further aggravating an injury to his leg that he sustained earlier in the contest. He was evaluated by our experienced athletic trainers and team physicians, and we're confident proper medical decisions were made. The University of Michigan has a distinguished group of Certified Athletic Trainers and team physicians who are responsible for determining whether or not a player is physically able to play. Our coaches have no influence or authority to make determinations if or when an injured player returns to competition. The health and welfare of our student-athletes is and will continue to be a top priority.”

While yes, Morris was struggling with a leg issue during the second half, that wasn’t the only injury that had many up in arms following the 30-14 loss.

Morris suffered a leg injury at some point during the game, which had him hampered much of the second half. With about 12:32 remaining, Minnesota's Cameron Botticelli landed on Morris’ ankle and Morris was noticeably hobbled. So much so that the announcers on the broadcast were calling for him to be taken out of the game. However, he never went to the sidelines, trainers never went out to evaluate him and he continued the game despite a healthy substitute quarterback in Devin Gardner waiting on the sidelines.

The injured leg left Morris with limited mobility, which was evident when he couldn’t step into a pass two plays later. Then, the worst possible thing happened. Morris took a helmet-to-helmet hit by Minnesota's Theiren Cockran that left him wobbly. At one point, Morris collapsed into the arms of right tackle Ben Braden.

Michigan QB Shane Morris nearly collapses after hit.

Morris motioned to the sideline that he was fine and stayed in one more play before finally coming out of the game.

But then it got worse. A few plays later, Gardner lost his helmet and Michigan subbed Morris back into the game for a handoff. Morris could barely even stand. And what would have happened if the ball had been fumbled or the play had been broken? The injury to Morris could have been catastrophic.

We don’t know whether Morris was concussed, but he was certainly injured — so injured even his teammates were motioning for trainers to come look at him — and it should have never gotten to that point. This was a losing effort. Morris had thrown for less than 50 yards and at the point he was injured, the Wolverines were down 23 points. Morris wasn’t going to all of a sudden lead a dramatic comeback on a bad drumstick and a possibly scrambled head.

It’s interesting that the Hoke statement doesn’t address a concussion or possible concussion since it’s the thing that concerned people the most. He could have even dismissed the notion that Morris was concussed, but he didn’t do that either.

Regardless of what Morris’ injury was, the coaching staff, training staff and university let Morris down. Hoke noted that it’s up to the trainers to determine whether a player is physically able to play, but how about just some common sense? How about just using your eyes and seeing that a player is in distress? That’s on the coach and the staff. Hoke can throw the training staff under the bus if he wants, but he needs to take responsibility for not doing anything to protect a player that everyone watching the game could see was in obvious distress.

Brady Hoke 'confident proper medical decisions were made' for Shane Morris

Michigan coach Brady Hoke issued a statement Sunday night on why QB Shane Morris didn't immediately sit out Saturday's game against Minnesota after he was hit in the head.

Morris took a shot to his chin a few plays after he landed awkwardly while being taken down throwing a pass. Morris was limping after the first hit and after he got hit in the head he had a hard time standing up.

He stayed in the game for another play and then re-entered when backup QB Devin Gardner's helmet came off and he was forced to leave the game for a play. Hoke said Sunday he was confident proper medical decisions were made during the game regarding Morris' health.

“The safety of our student-athletes is always our top priority. We generally never discuss the specifics of a student-athlete's medical care, but Shane Morris was removed from yesterday’s game against Minnesota after further aggravating an injury to his leg that he sustained earlier in the contest.

Morris left the game after taking the one snap for Gardner.

When he was asked about Morris having a possible concussion after Satuday's 30-14 loss, Hoke said he didn't know if Morris had a concussion and that if Morris didn't want to be in the game, he would have stayed down or gone to the sidelines. After the hit to his helmet, Morris gestured to the sidelines that he watned to stay in.

However, similar to what Hoke said about coaches not having influence or authority to make determinations if or when an injured player returns to competition, the player shouldn't have any influence either.
