Tennessee's young team proves to be better than expected
Tennessee was the youngest team in the country this season, but it didn’t look like it in its season opener against Utah State.
The Vols jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back trouncing the Aggies 38-7.
It was a result no one who wasn’t a Tennessee fan saw coming. Utah State was returning a veteran quarterback and a strong defense while more than half of Tennessee’s roster was new. But coach Butch Jones' recruiting appeared to pay off as Tennessee was faster, more efficient and even coached better than their Utah State counterparts.
The way Tennessee played in its season opener makes the Sept. 13 contest against Oklahoma far more intriguing than it was even a day ago. Oklahoma had its way with Louisiana Tech 48-16 on Saturday.
The Vols have to get past Arkansas State next weekend and Oklahoma has Tulsa, but that Sept. 13 contest, if both teams stay undefeated, could have some meaning later in the season, especially for Oklahoma, which might need a quality win to offset the fact that the Big 12 doesn’t play a conference championship game.
But Tennessee is no longer a gimme and this game might have raised expectations for the Vols. Jones’ team looked ready to compete and appeared to be — albeit against a Mountain West team — a better squad than it was during his first season.
We’ll see if that’s the case as the year treks on the opponents get more difficult.

The 'Baylor Line' makes its inaugural appearance at McLane Stadium
Baylor might have a new stadium, but the traditions from it old home remained intact. Included in those traditions was the “Baylor Line” where members of the Line get to run down the opposite tunnel from the players and onto the field.
Here's a little more information from the Baylor website:
Prior to each home football game, the Line gathers at one end of Floyd Casey Stadium and, led by the cheers of alumni and fans, runs onto the field and creates an enormous human tunnel to welcome the football team to Floyd Casey Stadium. After each player and coach has entered the stadium, The Line takes their seats in an exclusive Baylor Line section behind the opponent’s bench to cheer on the Bears to victory.
As you can imagine, this can sometimes get a little dicey as it did for the poor students who were trampled on the right side of the video. Still, if you can manage to keep your feet and avoid injury, this is a pretty cool tradition, especially to christen a new stadium.

North Carolina State shows off black jerseys for Old Dominion game
North Carolina State is riffing off AC/DC for its next game.
The Wolfpack are wearing black uniforms September 6 against Old Dominion. And if you didn't already guess what the AC/DC reference is, it's Pack in Black. (The video above has AC/DC as the soundtrack.)
The school showed off the uniforms to the players on Sunday. We're going to call it a subdued excitement. There are some whoops, but not the sheer pandemonium we've seen before with uniform unveilings.
As for the uniforms themselves, it looks like a wolf has attacked each player's shoulders and they are playing with severe wounds. The wolves should be attacking the opposing team.
#PackinBlack jerseys will be available for purchase at a later date @adidas http://ift.tt/1nheEMN

The helmets look good though. We're a sucker for black helmets, and the patterning is a cool and subdued.

Cal gets first FBS win since 2012 on the road against Northwestern
Cal has matched last season's win total. And even if the Golden Bears lose every game the rest of the season and have consecutive 1-11 seasons, 2014 is already better than 2013 because of that lone win.
The Golden Bears' 31-24 win over Northwestern Saturday was the first time Cal beat an FBS-level team since topping Washington State on Oct. 13, 2012. Yes, almost two years, and coincidentally, the same day that Georgia State last won a game before winning on Wednesday night against Abilene Christian.
Last season, Cal's only win came against FCS Portland State. And it was by seven. Of its 11 losses, one was against Northwestern, who beat Cal 44-30.
It wasn't even close to that on Saturday. Cal stormed out to an early lead thanks to two touchdown passes by sophomore Jared Goff. Goff, who was Cal's primary QB last season as a freshman, completed 21-34 and finished with 281 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
Northwestern, meanwhile, looked much more like the team that finished 2013 on a seven-game losing streak before beating Illinois in the season finale than the team that started last year 4-0.
QB Trevor Siemien, now without the shadow of Kain Colter, both on the field at quarterback and off the field with a union movement, was inefficient, only completing 23 of his 43 passes. The loss of Venric Mark, the potential sixth-year senior star at running back, was evident. Justin Jackson had eight carries for 40 yards and Treyvon Green had 13 carries for 37 yards.
The highlight of Northwestern's day was a trick play for a TD. But it only cut the deficit to 31-21. After a fourth quarter field goal to make Cal's lead seven, Northwestern's potential game-winning drive went flat.
The victory could also be the start of a two-game winning streak for Cal. Next week, the Golden Bears play Sacramento State, another FCS school. A 2-0 Cal is incredibly possible.
However, we won't get ahead of ourselves. Cal has five ranked teams on its schedule, plus games at Arizona, Washington State and at home against BYU. Bowl aspirations seem unlikely. But this is a good start for coach Sonny Dykes' second season and a sign that a turnaround is possible.

Northwestern’s offense hasn’t exactly been lighting it up against Cal on Saturday, but it did have this gem of a trick play to get itself back in the game.
After an interception by senior linebacker Colin Ellis put the Wildcats on the 17-yard line, quarterback Trevor Simien threw a screen pass to Jayme Taylor who threw it back to Simien. Simien, not known for his running ability or athleticism, somehow made a defensive back bite on his one and only move and then stretched out for the touchdown.
There’s no doubt that DB will be hearing about that play all season.
The entertaining and painfully slow-developing play cut Cal’s lead to 31-21 late in the third quarter.

Nebraska WR Jordan Westerkamp makes insane behind-the-back catch (Video)
It didn’t take long for Tavaun Smith’s awesome catch from earlier Saturday afternoon to get one-upped.
Nebraska wideout Jordan Westerkamp, known for catching the game-winning Hail Mary pass in the Huskers’ win over Northwestern last season, somehow managed to haul in a Tommy Armstrong BEHIND HIS BACK during the third quarter against Florida Atlantic.
That’s right – behind his back. You have to see it to believe it.
I’ve really never seen anything like it. FAU defensive back Christian Milstead actually made a great play to dive and tip Armstrong’s pass, but Westerkamp somehow had the concentration to corral the ball behind his back while getting both feet in bounds.
The catch was part of a great day for Westerkamp. The redshirt sophomore has caught seven passes for 125 yards and a touchdown while the Huskers maintain a big lead in the fourth quarter.
The best catch of the 2014 college football season may have come in week one because Westerkamp’s play is going to be hard to beat.

UCLA's defense shines while it's offense has work to do
UCLA’s much-hyped 2014 debut didn’t go the way it hoped, but at least it got out of Virginia with a 28-20 win against the Cavaliers.
The Bruins, a team many thought could challenge for the College Football Playoff, looked out of sorts on offense as Heisman hopeful quarterback Brett Hundley was harassed by the vaunted Virginia defense most of the game.
Hundley completed 20-of-33 passes for 242 yards and had the Bruins’ only offensive touchdown on a 6-yard run.
The day actually belonged to the UCLA defense, which had three first-half touchdowns on turnovers. That kept UCLA in the game early, otherwise Virginia probably should have won the game.
So, the defense answered whether it would be a strength for the Bruins this season, but the offense has a lot of work to do. Virginia’s defense was its strength coming into the season and it showed on Saturday. But what UCLA faced isn’t an anomaly. It’s going to see similar and better defenses in conference play, so it needs to figure what went wrong and correct it in a hurry.
It will get a chance to have an offensive feel-good game against Memphis next week before it has to face Texas. Only then will we know what this offense really learned from its season opener.

Brissett rallies NC State past Ga. Southern
Ohio State knocks off Navy 34-17 in first game without Braxton Miller
Ohio State’s first game without Braxton Miller wasn’t easy, but things came together in the second half in a hard-fought 34-17 win over Navy in Baltimore.
Redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett made his first start at quarterback. Despite early struggles, he lived up to his dual-threat billing with 226 passing yards and two touchdowns and 50 rushing yards. Barrett threw just 15 passes, completing 12, as head coach Urban Meyer relied heavily on a bevy of talented running backs, three of whom rushed for more than 40 yards.
With a new quarterback and four new starters on the offensive line, the Buckeyes’ offense looked a bit out of sorts from the jump, but a bruising running game wore the Midshipmen down as the game went on.
The first half trudged to a close after a DeBrandon Sanders one-yard TD run for Navy and two Sean Nuernberger field goals for OSU. The second half was a different story.
Less than two minutes into the third quarter, Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee returned a Keenan Reynolds fumble 61 yards to give the Buckeyes their first lead and first touchdown of 2014. Navy was able to quickly respond, however, when a 67-yard run from Ryan Williams-Jenkins set up a 1-yard TD run from Reynolds on the next drive to retake a 14-13 lead.
Later in the third quarter, Barrett found Devin Street behind the Navy secondary for an 80-yard touchdown pass to give OSU a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Though it did allow a field goal, OSU’s defense stiffened while the running game grinded out the clock and sealed the victory.
So what did we learn about the fifth-ranked Buckeyes? For one, the offense won’t look a whole lot different under Barrett compared to Miller, it’ll just be a simplified version. Save for his interception inside the red zone, Barrett made most of the right decisions in his first game action.
Also, the Buckeyes have a slew of talented running backs who can shoulder the load. Though Barrett led the team in rushing, Curtis Samuel (7 rushes, 45 yards), Ezekiel Elliott (12 rushes, 44 yards, 1 TD) and Dontre Wilson (6 rushes, 43 yards) all showed flashes. The inexperienced offensive line wasn’t always opening up the biggest holes for the trio, but Meyer has options to work with in efforts to replace the effort of Carlos Hyde. The offensive effort as a whole was something to build on.
The defense looked solid in dealing with Navy’s option offense and another test awaits OSU next weekend when Virginia Tech travels to Columbus.

Iowa's Tevaun Smith made a fantastic one-handed TD grab (Video)
Iowa wideout Tevaun Smith gave us an early candidate for top catch of the week early in the second half against Northern Iowa.
Leading 17-13, the Hawkeyes were looking to increase their lead on a third-and-goal from the 6-yard line. Quarterback Jake Rudock looked Smith’s way and the junior delivered, hauling Rudock’s pass with one hand in the back right corner of the end zone to increase the team’s lead to 24-13.
Rudock’s pass was on the money, allowing Smith to make a play despite tight coverage from the Panthers’ Makinton Dorleant.
After registering 24 catches for 310 yards as a sophomore in 2013, Smith was expected to see an increased role this season. Iowa head coach has to like what he’s seen from Smith thus far.
Smith's team, however, is in a battle. Early in the fourth quarter, the Hawkeyes have just a one-point lead over their in-state FCS opponent. Maybe Smith can come to the rescue.

UCLA scores three defensive touchdowns in first half against Virginia
Prior to the season, a lot was made about UCLA’s offense and quarterback Brett Hundley as a possible Heisman Trophy contender.
Through the first half of Saturday’s season opener against Virginia, it’s the UCLA defense that’s points on the board for the Bruins.
All of UCLA first-half touchdowns have come off Virginia turnovers — all in the second quarter — and they have the Bruins ahead 21-10 at halftime.
Defensive back Ishmael Adams got the scoring going with an interception returned for 20 yards.
With 2:55 remaining in the half, defensive back Randall Goforth had a 75-yard fumble recovery for a score.
Linebacker Eric Kendricks capped the first-half scoring with a 37-yard interception return with 1:20 remaining the half.
If not for the defense, UCLA would be losing this game because the offense has done very little against a surprisingly stout Virginia defense. Hundley completed 9-of-13 passes for 113 yards in the first half and the running game managed just 23 yards.
If UCLA hopes to win this game, the offense will have to show up in the second half because there’s little chance the defense will be able to repeat its stellar first-half performance.

Ohio State TE Jeff Heuerman wears No. 5 in honor of Braxton Miller (GIF)
Ohio State TE Jeff Heuerman ditched his No. 86 jersey for a different one against Navy.
With QB Braxton Miller out for the season with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, Heuerman wore No. 5 on Saturday.
He posted a picture of the jersey to his Twitter account on Saturday morning.
Only right that part of him stays on the field with us @BraxtonMiller5 http://ift.tt/1n9tl4j
— Jeff Heuerman (@JHeuerman86) August 30, 2014
Last year, LB Ryan Shazier switched to No. 2 from No. 10 in October to honor Christian Bryant after Bryant broke his ankle. Shazier wore No. 2 for the rest of the season. No word if Heuerman will go back to his No. 86 after Saturday or keep wearing Miller's No. 5 for all of 2014.
In 2013, Heuerman had 26 catches for 466 yards and four touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Heuerman didn't put a bandage on the shoulder of his jersey to mimic the Braxton Miller mannequin at the Ohio State bookstore. After news that Miller was out for the season spread, someone put a bandage on the right shoulder (Miller's throwing shoulder) of the mannequin.

Ficken, Hackenberg lead Penn State to last-second win over UCF in Ireland (GIFs)
Penn State dominated the first half of the inaugural Croke Park Classic, but it let UCF hang around. It almost doomed the Nittany Lions, but senior kicker Sam Ficken came through in the clutch when it mattered most.
Ficken drilled a game-winning 36-yard field goal as time expired to give Penn State a dramatic 26-24 win over the Knights in Dublin, Ireland. It was Ficken’s fourth field goal of the day and it ensured that James Franklin’s first game as Penn State head coach was victorious.
Ficken’s kick capped off a drive that started with just 1:13 to go after UCF took a 24-23 lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Knights quarterback Justin Holman, who came on in relief of struggling starter Pete DiNovo. The Penn State offense, led by sophomore quarterback Christian Hackenberg, was able to move its way up the field on a seven-play drive to set up Ficken’s heroics.
Hackenberg became the first Penn State quarterback to throw for over 400 yards in a game, racking up 457 yards and a touchdown on 32-of-47 passing attempts. Most of those passes were directed to sophomore Geno Lewis or redshirt freshman DaeSean Hamilton. Hamilton, in his first ever collegiate game, came up huge with 11 catches for 165 yards.
Lewis caught eight passes for 173 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Lewis also made an acrobatic catch for a 41-yard gain late in the fourth to give Hackenberg the school’s single-game passing record.
UCF was held to just 35 yards of total offense in the first half, but managed to keep the deficit to just seven points at halftime. After another DiNovo (3/8, 18 yards) drive fell flat to open the second half, head coach George O’Leary then inserted Holman into the ballgame midway through the third quarter and he immediately provided a spark.
Holman’s first drive resulted in a score. His second drive did, too. A few Penn State turnovers followed and when the Knights took over again down six with 3:30 to go, Holman, who finished 9-of-14 for 204 yards, led an eight-play, 75-yard drive in just 2:17 to give UCF a 24-23 lead.
Unfortunately for Holman, the Knights’ defense could not hold the lead.
If it's any consolation for UCF, I think we know who’ll be under center for the Knights next week against Missouri now.

Colorado State RB transfers Dee Hart and Treyous Jarrells make the Rams a scary-good team
As the final seconds ticked down on Colorado State’s 31-17 victory over rival Colorado, coach John McElwain grabbed running back Dee Hart and gave him a big hug.
Were it not for the play of Hart and fellow running back Treyous Jarrells, the Rams probably would have lost the game. Both players rushed for 100 yards in their first games with Colorado State – Hart had 139 yards and Jarrells had 121 — to give the Rams two 100-yard running backs in the same game for the first time since 1996.
What’s most shocking about the Rams running game on Friday was that it didn’t really come together until the beginning of August. Hart left the Alabama program after the bowl game, got into some trouble with the law, graduated and then found himself reunited with McElwain, who used to be the offensive coordinator for the Tide. Jarrells, a junior college transfer from Grossmont Community College in El Cajon, Calif., didn’t join the Rams until the end of the spring.
Yet there was a major need for both players after Kapri Bibbs, who rushed for a single-season school record 1,741 yards and 31 touchdowns a year ago, left for the NFL and Donnell Alexander quit the team after just one spring practice. That left the Rams with Eric Williams, who played in one game in 2013, Jasen Oden, who converted from safety, and redshirt freshman Bryce Peters.
The addition of a strong running game makes Colorado State a far more intriguing program, especially since quarterback Garrett Grayson was stymied in this game completing just 56 percent of his passes for 134 yards and a touchdown (Grayson did throw for a school-record 3,696 yards a year ago). And a win over rival Colorado will do wonders for the Rams confidence especially going into a Mountain West Conference game against Boise State next week.
As for Colorado, many believed this was a must win if the Buffs wanted to go to a bowl game for the first time since 2007. It was a pretty much a tale of two halves for the Buffs. In the first half they looked solid and confident. In the second half they looked like the same Colorado teams that have struggled in recent seasons.
There aren’t many gimmes on Colorado’s schedule. Games against UMass (Sept. 6) and Hawaii (Sept. 20) are winnable, but the Buffs are going to have to steal some Pac-12 games to get to that elusive six wins. If they play like they did in the first half where quarterback Sefo Liufau was connecting with Nelson Spruce, who had seven catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns, then Colorado could beat some teams many might not expect them to beat. But if they play like they did in the second half where they struggled to have any offensive consistency, it’s going to be another long season.

Florida International bars beat reporter from covering Saturday's game
Florida International, apparently unhappy with the way the team has been covered, has barred Miami Herald writer David J. Neal from having a credential to Saturday's game.
Neal has been covering FIU since 2011. The Panthers play Bethune-Cookman, an FCS school, Saturday evening.
No explanation was given by FIU, but Neal’s access to FIU coaches and athletes had been dwindling for months, to the point where he was no longer permitted to attend football practice or conduct interviews. Last week, when Neal attempted to write a story on the FIU women’s soccer team, he was told no one was allowed to talk to him.
“It’s unprecedented for any local team to refuse to credential our beat reporter without reason,” Miami Herald Executive Editor Aminda Marqués Gonzalez said of the four pro and two college teams the Herald covers on a regular basis. “The team does not get to choose who covers the program.”
It doesn't appear to be an issue with the Herald itself. According to the paper, a photographer and columnist were credentialed and a spokesperson for FIU quoted in the Herald story said the school was disappointed the Herald chose not to cover the game.
Perhaps it's because of FIU's choice? The Herald said it's "the only major media that covers a wide spectrum of men and women FIU sports programs year-round, from baseball to basketball to football to volleyball and soccer" and that after a thorough review, it stood by Neal's work covering the team.
A move to swipe credentials from a reporter in an instance like this is a bad move for any team, no matter the size and scope. However, it's an especially poor move for Florida International, one of the bottom teams not only in FBS, but in its own state. Florida has seven FBS-level programs. If they were ranked on popularity, FIU would be sixth at best.
The Herald may lose some readers with its move, but FIU stands to lose a lot more. Because of the standing of FIU, many more people would read a story about the football by seeing it on the Herald's website while browsing or flipping through the newspaper than who would abandon the Herald to seek out coverage from another outlet.
The school should be wanting the coverage, and no, the scrutiny and attention this move has garnered doesn't count as coverage. FIU was 1-11 in Ron Turner's first year last season. When you're 1-11, not everything is going to be positive.
It's enough to be known as a bad football team. You don't want to be known as a bad football team that also bars reporters from covering games without a stated reason. Unfortunately, FIU is resembling the latter.

Western Kentucky dominates Bowling Green in Jeff Brohm's head coaching debut
Jeff Brohm’s head coaching debut was a gem.
Nearly seven months after being promoted from offensive coordinator when Bobby Petrino left Western Kentucky in January, Brohm’s Hilltoppers racked up a school record 702 yards of total offense in a 59-31 rout of Bowling Green, the defending MAC Champions.
Led by senior quarterback Brandon Doughty, the Hilltoppers came out quickly and put the Falcons’ defense on its heels. By the 8:36 mark of the second quarter, WKU was up 21-0 and at half-time it was 31-10.
In game one under new coach Dino Babers, the closest the Falcons would get in the second half was 14 points, but Doughty and company continued to pour it on as he threw for 569 yards, another school record, and six touchdowns while connecting with nine different receivers. Taywan Taylor led the receiving corp with 12 catches for 185 yards and a score.
The 59 points scored by Western Kentucky, in its first season as a member of Conference USA and sixth overall FBS season, is also a new school record.
FINAL: #WKU 59, BGSU 31. Tops break five school records in process – total yards (702), most points scored in FBS.
— WKU Herald Sports (@wkuheraldsports) August 30, 2014
Doughty added three records of his own: Single-game passing yards (569), TD's (6) and completions (46).
— WKU Herald Sports (@wkuheraldsports) August 30, 2014
The decision to hire Brohm was a quick one by WKU. A day after Petrino was introduced (again) at Louisville, the school made Brohm’s hire official. Brohm was WKU’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator under Petrino in 2013 – a year where the Hilltoppers’ offense saw a gradual improvement as the year went on.
After a 4-4 start, the Hilltoppers finished the 2013 with four straight wins to finish the year at 8-4. That late season momentum seemed to carry over into Friday night’s showdown – a game where Brohm said “everything seemed to go right.”
A road matchup with Illinois is next on the schedule for WKU and the Illini should definitely be on upset alert.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury agrees to contract extension through 2020
On the eve of the opening game of his second season as Texas Tech head coach, Kliff Kingsbury has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Lubbock through 2020.
The new agreement is a three-year extension that includes a salary bump up to $3.1 million in 2015. Kingsbury’s original contract, a five-year deal signed in 2012, was set to keep him with the program through 2017.
The school announced the agreement Friday night.
"There has never been a more exciting time within our football program than now," athletic director Kirby Hocutt said. "I am very proud of the program Coach Kingsbury is building and I know our fans are as well. We can't wait to kick off the season tomorrow night at Jones AT&T Stadium and are looking forward to a bright future."
Along with Kingsbury’s extension, the university also unveiled plans to build an indoor football facility, as well as a renovation project to the team’s current training facility.
“This is where I want to be and I couldn’t be happier,” Kingsbury said. “I can’t wait to take this thing to the next level.”
Kingsbury was a standout quarterback for the Red Raiders from 1998-2002, where he set a number of school records. He played professionally in the NFL, NFL Europe and CFL before starting his coaching career at the University of Houston in 2008. He then spent a year as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator in 2012 before being hired by his alma mate in December 2012.
The Red Raiders went 8-5 in Kingsbury’s first season as head coach, culminating with a 37-23 win over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. The 2014 campaign will kick off Saturday at home against Central Arkansas.

Watch Michigan State RB Nick Hill pull a spin move for a touchdown (GIF)
Michigan State fifth-year senior running back Nick Hill matched his 2013 touchdown total with this videogame-like play during the second quarter.
Hill took the handoff from quarterback Connor Cook at the 17-yard line, blasted through the line, made one defender miss, pulled off a nice spin move and then broke another tackle to waltz into the end zone. It was definitely one of the more athletic touchdowns of the game (though the Spartans had a lot of athletic plays for scores).
Hill’s touchdown made the score 28-0. He also had an 8-yard rushing TD to make it 35-0. The two touchdowns matched Hill’s touchdown total of his entire career.

Cuse QB Hunt ejected for punch in opener
Syracuse QB Terrel Hunt ejected for punching opponent in the head (Video)
Syracuse QB Terrel Hunt was ejected from the Orange's game against Villanova in the second quarter for punching a Villanova player in the head.
Yes, it was a punch, and yes, it was on purpose. Here it is.
Hunt is clearly mad about the way he was tackled by Dillon Lucas and felt Lucas came in late on the play. However, it's no excuse to punch him. And that doesn't even take into account the fact that the umpire was right next to the play. It was an incredibly easy call.
It's a stupid mistake too. Hunt is a senior and was Syracuse's primary quarterback in 2013. It's bad enough when a freshman does something like this, but a senior leader? Hunt knows better, but he has to act like he knows better. He's the quarterback. Limit the dumb decisions to avoidable interceptions and self-inflicted sacks.
He wasn't the only player to get punchy Friday night, either. Bowling Green's Darrell Hunter smacked Western Kentucky's Tyler Higbee. Just like Hunt, Hunter committed his offense right in the vicinity of an official and he was immediately tossed from the game.
Pro tip: Don't punch players, especially in the helmet. If you're going to resort to dirty tactics, do it where it hurts. Punching a player in the helmet seems like an exercise in futility and a recipe for a broken hand or finger.

Northern Illinois unveils new white uniforms for Northwestern game (Video)
A surprise was waiting for the Northern Illinois Huskies following a team meeting on Friday.
Less than two weeks after unveiling multiple new uniform combinations for the 2014 season, the program decided to add an all-white combination to the mix.
The white uniforms were unveiled to the @NIU_Football team today. Go to NIU Huskies Facebook page for more! http://ift.tt/1prKbRs
— NIU Huskie Athletics (@NIUAthletics) August 29, 2014
The new white uniforms with black numbers and letters with red trim will be worn when the Huskies take a trip east to square off with in-state rival Northwestern at Ryan Field next Saturday, September 6.
Two white helmets were also revealed along with the jerseys – one with the Husky logo and one with the “NIU” decal.
The players had great reactions as they turned the corner into the locker room to see the new jerseys, bringing to mind the awesome black uniform reveal for Ohio from 2011.
The Huskies’ season opened up Thursday with a dominant 55-3 win over Presbyterian, where the team wore uniforms with a corn pattern. They’ll have a few extra days to prepare for the Wildcats, who open up at home against Cal on Saturday afternoon.

Reports: Anthony Jennings will start for LSU, Blake Sims for Alabama
When LSU opens its season against Wisconsin Saturday, sophomore Anthony Jennings will reportedly be under center.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting that Jennings edged out true freshman Brandon Harris to earn the start “after putting in a strong week of practice,” but Tigers head coach Les Miles indicated earlier this week that both Jennings and Harris will play in the neutral site contest at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
Jennings made his first career start in LSU’s Outback Bowl win against Iowa last season. He saw action in nine games overall, including when he came off the bench to lead the Tigers to a win over Arkansas when Zach Mettenberger went down with a knee injury late in the ball game.
Harris was a four-star recruit in the 2014 class who enrolled early for the Tigers and impressed with his play in spring practice. A native of Bossier City, La., Harris was rated as the fifth-best dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 99 overall prospect nationally.
Jennings and Harris will be without one of the team’s top targets, five-star freshman receiver Malachi Dupre, in the opener. According to TigerBait.com, Dupre “has been hampered by a hamstring pull” that occurred early on in preseason camp.
Additionally, TigerBait.com is reporting that sophomore cornerback Rashard Robinson did not make the trip to Houston for undisclosed reasons. Robinson played in 12 games last season, starting two.
Elsewhere in the SEC, CBSSports.com is reporting that senior Blake Sims will start at quarterback for Alabama in the Tide’s season opener against West Virginia. Sims was competing with Florida State transfer Jacob Coker for the starting role.
Sims will get the nod, though Coker is expected to play when the Tide kicks off against the Mountaineers at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Coker, who lost Florida State's starting competition to Jameis Winston last season, was considered the favorite to win the job.

LSU's Rashard Robinson and Malachi Dupre don't travel for Wisconsin game
LSU went to Houston to play Wisconsin on Saturday without two potential key contributors.
Per the Advocate, CB Rashard Robinson and WR Malachi Dupre didn't travel with the team for the game. Robinson is a likely starter at CB but has been practicing with the second team. According to the Advocate, he's suspended for the game.
Dupre, a freshman, has an ankle injury.
Jalen Collins will start in Robinson's place. Robinson had 16 tackles and an interception in 12 games last season and earned a starting role near the end of the year.
Dupre was a five-star recruit out of New Orleans in the class of 2014 according to Rivals and sprained his ankle last week. He's been expected by many to contribute immediately to LSU's offense much like fellow five-star recruit RB Leonard Fournette. Only three players on LSU's roster had double-digit catches in 2013 (Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham and Jeremy Hill) and all three players are now on NFL rosters.
However, Dupre hadn't been practicing with the starting 11 on offense throughout fall camp either. LSU is expected to play both Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings at QB against Wisconsin. Coach Les Miles has been adamant about not revealing which quarterback will start.

SEC: Vandy cannot wear slogan in future
If You’re in College, You Spend a Lot of Time on Your Cell Phone
Vandy's 'Anchor Down' jerseys officially banned
SEC releases statement that says Vanderbilt uniforms were not legal
Vanderbilt's "Anchor Down" uniforms aren't legal after all.
During the Commodores' 37-7 loss to Temple, Vanderbilt wore jerseys with the slogan "Anchor Down" on the back nameplates in place of players names. It's against NCAA rules to have slogans on the backs of jerseys, and Vanderbilt was penalized with a timeout per quarter, the punishment for the rule violation.
However, early in the second quarter, Vanderbilt showed referee Ken Williamson an email that purportedly said the jerseys had been approved. After looking at the email, Williamson rescinded the timeout penalty.
Friday, the SEC released a statement and said the uniforms were worn and the timeouts were rescinded as a result of a "miscommunication."
"A miscommunication resulted in Vanderbilt wearing jerseys during its football game Thursday night that are not permissible under the NCAA uniform regulations," the statement said. "Before production of the jerseys, Vanderbilt sought approval of the jersey design from the NCAA, which included the words 'Anchor Down' on the back panel. The NCAA responded with written approval of the design as presented and Vanderbilt proceeded with the jersey production, assuming hte approval was applicable to the slogan as well as the colors and overall design in the submitted layout."
"NCAA football regulations do not permit the use of slogans on jerseys. Vanderbilt was originally penalized for the jerseys during the game and after being shown the written correspondence, the head referee also interpreted the correspondence to mean the slogan had been approved. Vanderbilt has been notified it cannot wear the slogan on its jersey for future games and has agreed to comply."
Earlier this month, South Florida wanted to replace players' names on the backs of its jerseys with "The Team." However, because of the no-slogan rule, those plans were squashed. Service academies are the only schools permitted to wear slogans on their jerseys.
Even if the NCAA permitted Vanderbilt's uniforms to be worn in the future, we're not sure the Commodores would wear them again. Vandy had seven turnovers in the drubbing to a team that was 2-10 last year. It was Temple's first road win against an SEC school since 1938.

Huskers' Pelini: Pot use 'out of control' in CFB

A Humbling Ten Year Lesson [Twenty-Something Rules]
Nebraska coach Bo Pelini randomly has some choice words about the evils of marijuana
It’s Friday morning and a perfect time to take a moment to listen to Nebraska coach Bo Pelini rail against the evils of marijuana.
During the Big Red Breakfast on Friday morning, Pelini decided to go on a tangent from the usual celebration of the season opener against Florida Atlantic to tell the 250 people in attendance about the dangers of marijuana in our society.
“Let’s face it, it’s not OK,” Pelini said. “I think everybody that’s our age, my age, hopefully understands that it’s not OK. It’s not good. It’s not good for you. And these kids do it on a daily basis and a yearly basis … and it’s a real problem out there.
“Fortunately for us it is not (an issue) in our program. But I can tell you around college football and college athletics … serious in college. I guarantee you walk into dorms nowadays and it is a horrible problem.”
Pelini, who will probably never get a coaching job in Colorado or Washington where pot is legal, added: “It is out of control.”
I wonder what it was like for the 250 people who showed up to get a season preview from the head coach and ended up at a D.A.R.E. meeting?
We’re not here to judge Pelini on his politics — we really don’t care — just the timing of his tangent and perhaps the fact that his brother, Carl Pelini, was fired from Florida Atlantic last season because he failed to report drug use by his staff members.
Oh, and as an aside, Nebraska does have a scholarship offer out for wide receiver Cordell Broadus, son of Snoop Lion, a big advocate of the sticky icky icky.
